  1. It's pretty amazing that with all the government zoning/permitting/inspecting and all the metrics, we still end up with that kind of thing. Almost unfathomable.
  2. Bylsma's "system" is about moving the puck quickly when transitioning from defense to offense. It's about getting the puck to the forwards with speed so they can enter the offensive zone on the fly. It's a difficult thing in the NHL because it requires puck moving defensemen and forwards with high skill level. There are only two goalies on an NHL game roster. There are 12 forwards and 6 defensemen. Numbers alone mean there are more limited opportunities and most teams aren't going to give a spot to a young goalie who would be better off playing every night in the AHL or ECHL. Additionally, you can hide a young defensemen or forward by matching up. No such luck with a goaltender. Keep in mind that most of these guys being drafted are teenagers. They're not physically or emotionally mature, which is why most of them don't see a game in the NHL until they are 22 or 23. The grind of playing 50+ games in the NHL wears down young players pretty quick and if you struggle at all mentally the process accelerates. Projecting a goalie is probably equivalent to projecting a QB. It's just very difficult to know where an 18 year old is going to end up 5 or 6 years later.
  3. There won't be anything from this draft that will benefit this team next season, unless we end up with Matthews. You simply don't pick players in the NHL draft with the expectation that they're going to help you in the short term. Even the best generally take 2 seasons to help you in the NHL. Reinhardt is a good example - he's a work in progress and he was number 2 overall 2 years ago. Eichel is clearly not the norm. GMTM will likely continue going BPA with the highest ceiling. That's how successful hockey teams are built. If we want to continue improving, its about that and development of guys like Fasching, Bàiley, Baptiste,Ruhwedel, and Guhle while spending wisely in free agency.
  4. Top goalies don't come from the draft. Generally goalies take a long time to develop. The NHL draft isn't like the NFL draft. It's pretty much accepted that you don't take a goalie in the first round.
  5. He was the creator. Almost everything good about ESPN in the last decade came straight from Simmons.
  6. The difference over one offseason is obviously dramatic. If we can get to .500 through 20 games we can definitely contend for a playoff spot. There are obviously still some holes on the back end but as you said, we're embracing the system and playing really good hockey most of the time.
  7. I don't like most of their stuff but their legacy and influence is undeniable. The last thing I read had them selling over 100,000,000 albums. That's more than just about anyone on my list.

  9. They didn't get "manhandled". They chose not to take what was being given them. Had they continued to run the ball instead of making Rogers try to win the game, they would have rolled us. Their running backs had 19 carries for 120ish yards. Lacy was ripping us and for some inexplicable reason they just stopped running the ball. And it doesn't change the overall point of Schwartz' defense not being anywhere near as good as the sales job going on. They dominated bad teams and got torched most of the time against top level QBs.
  10. Sure. Mostly because Nelson dropped a 90+ yard TD when the game was on the line. http://www.nfl.com/videos/green-bay-packers/0ap3000000443861/Jordy-Nelson-drops-perfect-pass-from-Aaron-Rodgers I put more of that game on GBs coaches because for whatever reason they just stopped running the ball.
  11. Most people don't go there, so when someone does they tend to give in quickly.
  12. People have very short memories. Schwartz' defenses struggled against good offenses as well. 1. Chargers rolled us to a big lead and then took the air out of the ball because our offense couldn't score enough to win. 2. Denver did the same thing. 3. Brady threw for 361 yards and 4 TDs in the game they played against us that mattered. This included giving up 4. The week after Jordie Nelson gift wrapped a win for us, the defense got physically dominated in Oakland by one of the worst offenses in the league with a rookie QB. 5. Blew a 10 point lead in the KC game (granted, one drive started at the 18 but that's where elite defenses have to force a FG, not give up a TD in two plays). We didn't beat an elite offense all season. The closest thing was probably the Detroit game because they kept Detroit to FG attempts.
  13. Watkins isn't small. He's 2 inches taller and almost THIRTY pounds heavier than Antonio Brown. Kelvin Benjamin is huge. And out for the season. Football players get hurt. There isn't a QB in the league who takes the horse collar Taylor took and doesn't get hurt.
  14. So...changing numbers didn't really hurt him. Dude is just filthy (he still hasn't turned 19!). To all of you who didn't want to tank...you really did want to tank and now you know why.
  15. It was only a few days into the thing. There's not nearly as many resources available as people think there are and the military generally does not make quick decisions on what would be perceived as a low value target. The treat and the remaining civilians were all contained. One of the least realistic things in the episode was the wave off by the Chinook pilot. Helicopter pilots are notorious for taking risks even when odds are very low of success. There's no way they wouldn't have tried to do something.
  16. No it wasn't and he didn't even attempt to go low.
  17. Bull. This game was eerily like the San Diego game.
  18. From the NFL rule book: A chop block is a foul by the offense in which one offensive player (designated as A1 for purposes of this rule) blocks a defensive player in the area of the thigh or lower while another offensive player (A2) occupies that same defensive player in one of the circumstances described in subsections (1) through (10) below. The penalty on Incognito was not a penalty.
  19. I agree. I'm tired of these games not being decided by the players.
  20. Paup was more effective because we'd replaced Walt Corey with Wade who moved Bennett inside where he played very well. Blaming Bennett for Walt Corey's inability to use his talent is horseshit.
  21. The 3rd and 9 play that resulted in the missed FG was the worst. That play was brilliantly blocked and setup but Dixon tripped over Incognito's foot and got about a yard. Just about any decent NFL running back gets at least 15 on that play and both Williams and McCoy probably house it.
  22. The 3rd down play where Boobie tripped over Incognito's leg might have been a TD with literally any other running back in the NFL. That was blocked brilliantly.
