No hockey GM should ever draft a "need" choice in any round. You fix your needs through free agency or trades. The draft should always be the best player on the board, with actual position being the LAST tie breaker. Hockey is not football. Unless you're picking number 1 overall, you're more than likely not getting a guy who will help you right away. Choices beyond the second round rarely make a dent in the NHL, though that appears to be changing a bit because of the salary cap and major country development programs that are now churning out better players.
The reason the McEichel tank was so important to the franchise was because by picking NLT second you were getting a proven 20+ NHL goal scorer who could help you the very first day he puts on the sweater.
