Sabres & NHL 2017-18 - Entry Draft on June 22
Alaska Darin replied to 26CornerBlitz's topic in Off the Wall Archives
I was only sort of watching and thought they were flipping the 2nd pick card when the Sabres' logo showed up. I went from totally bummed to elated in about 2 seconds. Then I had the same thought: "We're not going to do something stupid like trade down or pick someone who isn't Dahlin, right? RIGHT!?!?!?!? This is an epic get for the franchise...literally the shot in the arm that we desperately need. -
Wes Welker wasn't drafted and had to walk on with the Chargers to even get a shot in the NFL. It's unreal that every year people are bitter about 3rd day draft choices, as if ANY of them are guaranteed successes.

Why Jake Locker walked away from football.

The most important part of that article was about how dysfunctional the organization was. Locker was doomed the minute he was drafted. -
I sing that every single time I see the word Albania or anything that sounds anything like it. Night Court was one of the most underrated comedies of all time. Tremendous cast with so many famous "visitors".

Terrible ending to a terrible season.

This board would have lost its mind if it (and the internet with all the "information") was around in 1983 when we "wasted" a draft pick on Jim Kelly. "He barely even played his Senior year!" "He's injury prone!" "He only completed over 60% of his passes in ONE season and that's probably because he only threw 81 passes due to injury!" "He barely has more TDs than interceptions!" No one in the world knows how to accurately project an NFL QB. We have all the data in the world to back that up.

Nice first game, Laffs.

Sabres & NHL 2017-18 - Entry Draft on June 22

That's pretty much the point I was making, though they're getting better faster in today's NHL. Variety of reasons, obviously but it is happening. Risto has the tools to be a great NHL defenseman, as long as the mental stuff he's had to go through doesn't weigh him down. I think we're both saying the same thing. I pretty much don't expect Risto to be Seth Jones because he wasn't in the same situation. The Sabres remind me of the expansion Browns, who were given plenty of resources to build their team with and pretty much squandered all of them. -

I think it's fair to say he's not progressing as he should but his confidence has to be shaky at this point and that is as big a factor as anything at the professional level. Constant, bone-numbing losing is a disease that's hard to cure. I know how I feel right now as a fan - I can only imagine how he has to feel having to play nearly half the minutes every night. There's a reason McDermott came in and started cutting loose good young players who were ok with losing. I'm hoping the Sabres aren't going to have to do that too. Seth Jones started his career on the deepest defensive team in the NHL - a team that traded both him and Shea Weber away because they have so much talent (at this point I might take Nashville's AHL defensive squad over the Sabres). He was able to play bottom/mid pair minutes and matchups and develop with consistent, successful veterans on a winning team. All things aren't equal, so the results aren't going to be either. The Sabres haven't put him in the best position to succeed and will once again this off season try to find another top pairing type player to join the defensive corps. -

Risto is TWENTY THREE. He's played nearly 350 games in the NHL. Most NHL defensemen are 26 or 27 when they have that number of games under their belt. You may be right that he would currently be best as a 2nd pair guy but his ceiling is higher than that. It would be nice to finally win the damn lottery. -
Right? Upside is one of them will be gone. Downside is one of them will be moving on to the second round.
-
I'll believe there's a chance of that when your nancy-boy actually signs a contract. Until then, he's just the most protected circus clown in MMA history.

You mean because every fighter fights every other fighter using the same strategy? Khabib wouldn't stand with McGregor for any length of time. He'd start pressuring him immediately to ensure CM's minimal gas tank and pathetic take down defense and ground game would guarantee a short fight.

There's no way. There are going to be numerous lawsuits over this and it wouldn't surprise me if one of them was filed by the UFC. The new owners spent billions acquiring the company and I doubt they're very happy about the money they're going to lose on this PPV. He's not a great fighter, which is why he avoids anyone anywhere near his size with even the remote possibility of taking him down. He's a promotional machine who can sell his fight to a buncha mouthbreathers, which is great for the bottom line and the biggest reason the UFC keeps making the matches they're making. If he ever had to fight anyone who is actually anyone, he'll be totally exposed. Dana is praying to every deity in the universe that Khabib doesn't win that title because he KNOWS his cash cow will get absolutely destroyed if they ever get them in the octagon together.

No, it isn't. -
$300k is going to buy a whole lot more in Illinois in 10 years or so. Most of my family still lives within 30 miles of their birthplace. The children are running for the hills once they graduate college or join the military.
-
I don't remember exactly. Spencerport, Fairport, Perinton area. Don't know how anyone does it.
-
We looked at moving back a few years ago. $300k house in a nice neighborhood. Over $12k annually in taxes. Nope.

Illinois is hemorrhaging population and the state isn't going to be able to continue down the path they're on now. It will take a miracle for the state to make it through the next 10-15 years without declaring bankruptcy. The were holding onto bills for six months or more just last year because of how bankrupt the state really is. Moody's says the state is $250,000,000,000.00 in debt (currently about $20k per resident) and it's rising at a rate that far outpaces inflation. As baby boomer teachers, cops, firefighters, and administrators continue retiring, that bill for those very expensive pensions is going to come due with not nearly enough revenue coming in to cover the increasing costs. Given the number of companies that are fleeing the state and they pace it's happening, it's just a matter of time before there is a serious calamity. So while your macro situation isn't terrible, there are far more people who are seriously affected by the high taxation and regulatory environment of the state. You're paying double the national average for property tax. That's all but a guarantee that retirees are going to head for cheaper states where their money will go further.

There's a reason most operators don't fire on full auto.

Slit seeding is your friend, especially in the spring.

There are a lot of different things to recommend but it depends on where you live. Go to a local garden center, not the big box store kind. Every single one of them has "the guy" who knows your area and the best products/scheduling. They will generally have better products that will help the long term health of your lawn. It will likely cost a bit more but in the long run it's worth it. Be prepared to have your soil analyzed - that's another thing that will actually save you money. Keep in mind that you can't seed and "weed and feed" at the same time. So you have to make that choice. You can kill individual weeds with various things, including soapy water, so it depends on how bad it really is and how much work you want to put in.
