NFL football games are almost always decided by plays that aren't made. All the great QBs throw "near picks". Montana did it on the game winning drive against the Bengals in the Super Bowl - he hit Lewis Billups right in the chest and Billups dropped the ball. A few players later, the winner to John Taylor. There's a reason most DBs are DBs - they have terrible hands.

Merriman didn't injure it during the intros - he injured it in KC on a running play and spent quite some time on the sideline trying to stretch it out. They took him into the locker room and put some kind of brace on it - it was sticking out under his shoulder pad when he came back out. He may have aggravated it during the intro, which means it's probably one of those things that's going to linger all season until he's able to rest it for a long period. That's one of those things with "ball and socket" joints. They don't heal quickly ever and they don't heal at all unless you use them minimally.

That's small potatoes stuff in the grand scheme of things. If they eliminated the duplication of effort, sheer amount of "management" in the DoD, and revamped the contracting/award process they could probably save half of what we pay every year. It's amazing how many levels of management there are in virtually every organization and how little it actually brings to the table. No "non-DoD" entity would ever have organizational structures to match - they'd be out of business in no time. Well, unless they're DoD contractors because Congress has made the award process so ridiculous that businesses can add heinously high G&A costs and get reimbursed for them by the American taxpayer.

And let's not forget the real reason: The education "system" is an absolute failure. College classes today are the high school classes of 25 years ago.

On the second TD, the one where Barnett got stiff armed, Merriman was doing his best Schobel impression. Dude basically ran all the way to the opposite endzone tunnel while the running back run inside him. So at least once he wasn't concerned with his gap.

You mean other than sending the message to the players that if you consistently play over your contract, you'll be rewarded for it? Because that's certainly not important for an organization that hasn't been in the playoffs for a decade.

I think it's a little early for this. They guy hasn't played much meaningful football in two seasons and had an abbreviated offseason this year as well. It's kind of like the season TKO had after he came back from his achilles problem - dude looked done. Looks to me like Merriman is playing his way into football shape. I think he's going to be fine if he can stay healthy, but it might be next season before we see what he's really all about.
