Rex on EJ: "I'd like to see him use his legs more."
BackInDaDay replied to johnwalter's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
i've always thought EJ had to get physically involved in the game to get his juices flowing, and there were others here who saw it, too.. even if it was running to the LOS in a 2 minute drill - he seems to gain focus as his sense of urgency increases. i'm thinking Rex has already gotten an ok to risk getting him moving as much as needed -
Reported: Schwartz will be leaving the Bills
BackInDaDay replied to Uffalo Ills's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
jeez.. i'm very surprised he and Rex couldn't find some common ground to work from.. but it won't be the last time i'm wrong. as long as i'm right about our upcoming 11 win season -
Bills GM wants next coach to revive EJ Manuel
BackInDaDay replied to Joaquin1119's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Roman has to enter this summer believing that he has to reach his own conclusion about who can play, and who can't.. he's smart enough to realize that there's no way to differentiate between the coaches failures and the players failures. that's how bad this offense was. -

i read he turned down Ryan's offer to be DC.. and i'm thinking the only reason he'd quit would be for HC job.. otherwise reporrt may be wrong -

unless he's offered a HC job somewhere, Schwartz will be on Rex's staff -

I'm sorry, but I think we took a big step back

look at it this way ... if you think the D will be as good, and the STs will be as good, and the O will improve ... wehave a good chance for 11 wins -
Spiller sounds like he is likely to come back
BackInDaDay replied to Kelly the Dog's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
can't argue about the money part - that's always a juggling act, and is usually the tie-breaker at the pro level.. but that's not to say that Spiller may not be worth more as an offensive weapon tfor the right OC, than Spikes is to our D. you have to remember that he's easily exposed in pass coverages.. everybody's got their strengths and weaknesses.. if you want to run a speedster into the A gap with no second level blocking - yeah.. release /don't sign him -
Spiller sounds like he is likely to come back
BackInDaDay replied to Kelly the Dog's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
i agree the Spiller isn't a good fit for power/mauling aspect of Roman's running game, but i think his quickness is an advantage in the trap/counter stuff - as long as he can be coached to let it develop. so i think he might be a worthwhile back in half of his inside designs.. as far as threatening the D's edges with him running motion that might result in a sweep/pitch/pass - he give Roman a means to screw with the LBs reads, and something to design some option play off of - because he has scary speed... and from what i've read, Roman likes mis-direction to get more guys playside than you have to defend with. CJ's unique in that regard - his potential to beat you is only contained by a coach who doesn't play him because he doesn't understand his worth. i'm thinking Roman will find a way to incorporate him into whatever he builds. our QB situation is iffy, but we have diverse skill position players to attack with. why some of you are anxious to remove one, is baffling. -
if we hired anyone other than Ryan or Labeau, i'd be right with you.. they may have screwed with the D, which is why my initial ask was Schwartz and Johnson to move up, with a capable OC added to the mix. but leave it to Terry P to think outside the box, and not limit this rebuild of the staff to just the offensive side of the ball. if Schwartz wants to stay, he'll be given an opportunity to continue building a championship D with a guy he can bounce stuff off. meanwhile, Roman - the mad scientist - has his job to do.. rebuild the line and spread things out vertcally for a strong armed QB who'll need time getting comfortable throwing into tight windows. stretch those windows, Roman! you guys remember Gruden's observation to Eli before we drafted him? "you like to throw it up and have your guys go get it" as he showed him clips of vertical passes and repeated during each one, "go get it!".. "go get it". it's a piece of the kid's game that got buried in Marrone's O. Jeez, it'll be nice to see us take advnatage of all that sweet field possession we're gonna get.

chances are, Schwartz would love to take a raise and - as KTD points out - collaborate with the son of the coach who schemed up the defenses that he, Fisher, Greggo, and countless others were weaned on in the 90's.. other than a HC gig, how much better does it get for a football coach. this talk of philosophical differences is bs - they have more that joins them, than seperates them.

fyi - crawler on nfl network has roman interviewing for brown's oc job

i'm confident that Roman will create a good running game with what we have, and a multi-dimensional one with what we don't have yet. i sxpect immediate improvement in the O line - if only because Roman seems to understand how to get defenders to take themselves out of plays. i forget the quote, but the concept of 'orchestrating' a defensive response in order to expose a weakness to attack, is, well... something that either escaped the last staff, or was beyond their ability to achieve. something tells me, Roman will be able to evolve the O as we win... and i' m looking forward to watch it unfold

NEW HEAD COACH: Rex Ryan! It's Official!
BackInDaDay replied to K D's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
congrats to terry p and whaley on their first big hire.. not what i expected, but a refreshing 'think outside the box' move. i'm not concerned at all about our D, just anxious to see how our O staff fleshes out -
not sure if anyone pointed out that there's a coaching lineage from Rex's father Buddy to Fischer to Schwartz - i'm sure Rex and Jim will enjoy playing tinker toys with the personnel. i predict the if the best CB on the board is a better prospect than the best OG, he'll be our first pick. Rex loves playing 10 versus 9.

this Rex Ryan firing / hiring has obviously created a paradoxical shift within the time/space radius that includes the NY/ Buffalo areas. thanks for all your hard work.

[Please Change Title]CJ Spiller
BackInDaDay replied to Mikie2times's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
if the plays are there to be made inside, and he's bouncing it out.. there's some truth to this. he may need a 'confidence boost' from the coaches on the sideline that he better start hitting the hole as designed, before he's convinced to do so. one of the hardest things to do with RBs is to coach them out of using their instincts, and run it as drawn up. -

i think they trust Whaley in refining the candidates based on a plan that he and ownership have developed. now its a matter of matching up the people to the plan... and picking brains may influence their plan. its a dynamic process, that is no longer prioritized by cost -
i'd go with Wade, but since then, i think our HC's emotional state is best described by our old Coach Saban's famous "they're killin me" line. it's hard to be happy when frustrated. now if you expand your question to all Bills coaches - the easy winner is Schwartz

Pegula's doing his 'due diligence' in this hiring, because unlike Ralph, he's not delegating this decision to those responsible for the last fifteen years of swings and misses. he, and his wife are evaluating, and learning from, the men they've chosen to speak to - because these men been successful elsewhere. its how adults - who are secure in their jobs - hire people.. and being the owner is as secure a 'job' as it gets -
[Please Change Title]CJ Spiller
BackInDaDay replied to Mikie2times's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
our coaches and line didn't do him any favors this year.. they sacrificed agility for size, narrowed our gaps, and couldn't execute techniques that created holes. if i have one criticism of CJ. its that he cant get drop his hips to drive through seams, like Freddie can.. so he has a tendency to bounce outside. it's not 'vision' that fails him there, its lack of confidence - based on lack of success - based on poor technique. you guys have all seen the apparatus with the spring loaded arms, right? you send RBs through 'the car wash' to establish better technique to run inside.. i'm guessing a young man with CJ's speed wasn't sent through too often. coaches see potential, and Spiller has the potential to take it the house each touch, if you give him room to square up and run. i really believe the coaches failed him by not putting together a line that could pick guys off inside, and by not creating lateral movement that creates cutback lanes. a better offensive staff could create more opportunities for him. his name is definaty being brought up in our interview process. -
oj is to brady, as stadium is to ass is this an answer to one of Terry's interview questions?

Package Deal? (Mike & Kyle Shanahan)

outstanding point.. i'd wager that Terry is a fast study, and that he won't hear any references to coaching philosophies, concepts, and structures that he can't relate to his own experiences.. Marrone has inadvertently given Pegula an opportunity to affirm and/or dismiss any assumptions he may have regarding how championship teams are built in the NFL
