By either finding the next Marcia Brady or giving them more ammo to move around in the draft - either trading to get who they want or stockpiling picks into the future - it is a part of their plan. While the comp picks can't be traded, it allows them to trade their others while still grabbing a diamond in the rough like Seantrel. The point is, if you can manage to sign Landry AND be able to keep the extra 6th, doesn't that make the most sense? There is no competition for Landry right now. If their hand is forced by another team swooping in, sure, get the guy signed. But, many other teams are also trying to avoid losing a comp pick, thus limiting the market for any remaining free agents until after the draft.

Byrd cannot sign a new deal after the season due to his franchise tag requires a long-term deal by July 15th. Since they did not reach a deal by then, Byrd can't be signed until then, at which point Choice would be a free agent. Thus the two would never intertwine.
