I was thinking McGutless at the end there. But I'd definitely accept McSpineless. All hat...no cattle Coach McClappy.

Bills are a fraud just like their HC. -

HC has to change his spots - but he won’t and his Bills have maxed out. Someone needs to tell McClappy his vision is fatally flawed. -
The '21 Bills are sleepwalking to the playoffs

McD sounds like someone who took 1 too many classes an MBA student would on leadership and human psychology. -
Is it worth seeing if Antonio Williams should get a shot?
BillsVet replied to Lothar's topic in The Stadium Wall
On offense it's not just the bad draft picks/UFA's, but the contracts. People talk about being close to the cap but... Dawkins is getting paid a ton to be a middle of the road OT, albeit affected likely by the virus. Making Morse that highly paid with a concussion history. Daryl Williams (on admittedly a 1 year deal) at RT now kicked inside to G. Letting Teller go. Trading up for Ford, etc. Buffalo has heavily relied on UFA for OL, but not drafted the young guys (save perhaps Brown) to replace them. So, gotta spend more. Because, if a guy like Ford works out, you don't sign a Daryl Williams. McD and Beane had better up their game on offense - both amateur scouting and pro personnel - or this is how it'll be in future seasons. -

With the talent on offense available in the draft, does McD go secondary in the first round and LB in the second or vice-versa? -
McDermott has a lot of say in scheme, personnel to align, and player acquisition. His idea of a roster is something that needs an overhaul. They've improved on previous regimes by getting a bonafide franchise QB, but that can cover up deficiencies. As in, investing on an OL to protect said QB and help with the run game. They could be a lot more efficient with their cap dollars - which is the solution when unexpected events appear like a lowered cap. And a lot of that comes from being better on draft day so you're not needing to sign so many UFA's that start. The OL is a perfect example because they've used mostly UFAs there and haven't drafted well outside of Dawkins who should kick inside at some point. (EDIT: Spencer Brown looks promising in his 1st season). For me, expectations can increase during a season. In 2019, their schedule was ridiculously weak and at 10-6 smart fans knew something was off and they weren't as good as the record suggested. Fast forward to this year and expectations are through the roof after the AFC CG appearance. Schedule is soft, but they've managed to sink to 7-5 and that's disappointing. Season isn't lost, but much of that stems from off-season preparation. Looks like they figured what worked last year with only minor tweaking would be sufficient to get to the SB this season. It still may be, but for a franchise that talks about hard work it was short-sighted. Beane and McD really concern me about their knowledge of offense and aligning personnel to match as other teams improve against and adapt to Buffalo.

Jerry lost me when he took a purposefully designed picture and posted it on Twitter to make it seem the Bills cheaped out on the media's breakfast one Sunday not long ago. It was pure BS and all for nothing but holding a grudge against someone. Whatever you do, don't lie to me. But that's what Jerry did...and someone corrected it in real time thank goodness.

[Edit] The Obligatory Edmunds Thread (was: Edmunds name-only title)
BillsVet replied to beacon's topic in The Stadium Wall
I never get tired of the Joel Buchsbaum sayings. He obviously foresaw Tremaine Edmunds playing in the NFL. -
After every tough loss people gonna point to things that happened on the field, but it's what happened in the off-season which counts more. Why does McD need those LB's and his DL rotation? If we're pursuing continuous improvement, the focus needs to be squarely on why the HC needs what he does and whether it provides value. For example, he's drafted 4 DL in the top 2 rounds of the last 3 drafts. I didn't see much from any of them last night, nor from the 4 year veteran 1st round MLB who we keep hearing will figure things out. Besides, after 4+ seasons building his defense, why can't it not provide better performance? He's picked all the players, had his scheme in place all that time, and yet still comes up small in key moments. Perhaps it's because more offense is a better option than more defense.

I see a HC who drives the strategy for this team, but refuses to evolve even with a franchise QB on the roster. After 80+ games as a NFL HC, McD is still trying to balance defense with offense and seems scared of anything else. Agree that right now there's a huge disconnect between the HC and OC...which is concerning because after 4 seasons together you'd think they'd be in lock step. I attribute that to my first point: McD cannot evolve and is stubborn to a fault. I've been waiting for him to be bold in a big game, but unless he gets a lead, they go into their risk-avoidance decision making. At the same time, Daboll loses himself in-game and McD probably thinks he needs to keep him on a leash. Also agree with the alignment with Beane, who needs to man up and tell McD that it's time to go all in on Allen and stop this nonsense of needing every piece on defense. The highly paid LBs and depth DL aren't providing the value in the way better interior OL or better TE would. This team wins or dies with Allen, but McD hasn't gotten the memo yet. I don't think he ever will and the ceiling will be lower than we want.

Belichick owns McDermott. And he doesn't need inane quotes like "trust the process" to get his guys to play.

12/6/21 Gameday Thread Bills vs. Pats* 2nd Half Thread

Need to re-assess the guy who tells the GM what he wants for players to fit his scheme. Out-coached by Belichick...again -
I'll never understand why, after playoff success, the anxiety about Buffalo winning games is still so widespread. I know people are more anxious than ever about everything (both pre and post pandemic) but for goodness sake. Now is the time for Buffalo to go for the proverbial throat and put New England down with the NFL world watching. Make a statement and have no fear. I've always like the Latin motto of the British Special Air Service..."audentes fortuna iuvat" or "who dares wins." Anyone who's getting all angst-ridden...well, hug your teddy bear and ask for your momma. And maybe a warm glass of milk before night night time.

Memo to the RB in the first round crowd. Dynamic physical talents get beaten up at the pro level, particularly with more college mileage. There's a guy here who's on the record saying that in these parts. LOL

Does CB Now Become a Necessity Early in 2022 Draft
BillsVet replied to thronethinker's topic in The Stadium Wall
It's way too early to be thinking draft strategy, even after this injury. But, they've already used 4 of 6 1sts on defense during the McBeane years with the only offensive picks used on Josh and acquire Diggs. For a team ranked 2nd in defensive spending, there's a point where the offense is falling behind to staff the defense. I don't see the value behind another defender when they've already allocated significant resources on that side of the ball. -
He's had issues before, but anyone who's been close to mental illness knows that things can change quickly after relative calm. After a diagnosis, it can take even years to determine the right course of treatment, including medications. And then those medications may need adjusting. Mental illnesses are so misunderstood because most people haven't been educated on how they present. Here's to hoping Griffen and those around him are safe as soon as possible.

Sean McDermott: A Parallel to the Business World
BillsVet replied to saundena's topic in The Stadium Wall
Re 2, CT - Beane's status as an admin exec combined with a HC who is from the defense concerns me. Who on the offensive side of the ball factors into personnel decision making as it relates to overall scheme/strategy. Because their offensive personnel decisions have been (aside from JA) up and down. Their WR group is UFA/trades save Davis who hasn't impressed this season. The TEs and RBs are "meh" particularly given their draft position (3rd). The whole OL is UFA as well and they haven't developed anyone from within save Dawkins. I really hope they don't go the Packers route and just wing it surrounding their franchise QB. Still wish McD would understand his defense ain't winning a championship and will instead be via Josh's arm and his lesser known side of the ball. -
McD’s lack of offensive knowledge and inability to supervise his OC is killing the team. I see a HC who still believes having an elite defense will win a championship. At some point, Beane needs to make it clear they are an offensive team. Specifically, that they win with Allen and supporting him. Not having a balanced team that invests equally on both sides of the ball. Not confident McClappy can change his spots at this point in his career.

Forgot all about that. Wish I had the personalized season ticket renewal poster where Moorman is punting out of his own EZ against the Browns in that 6-3 loss when Derek Anderson completed 2 of 17 passes.

Jauron did himself no favors personnel-wise going secondary and defense when the NFL was transitioning to a throwing league. He had a strong voice in personnel matters with a (RIP) apathetic Tom Modrak and out of his element Marv Levy. Go review the games from that 2001 season. The bounces Chicago got that year were incredible. See Brown, Mike returning an INT in OT to win one game. And in true DJ fashion, they were 8-1 in one score games. Turk Schonert (RIP) was the only guy DJ could hire when it was clear his tenure as Bills HC was in doubt. Remember, Buffalo went 2-8 to close out the 2008 season and it's pretty clear he was on thin ice. In fact, at the end of 2008, the Bills circle of trust (Ralph, Littman, Brandon, and I think Overdorf) gathered to determine DJ's status. On the day Mike Shanahan was fired as Broncos HC despite going 8-8, the Bills chose to retain DJ. Of course, Schonert wanted to feature an up-tempo offense, while DJ favored a bend but don't break defense. It was a terrible match and spoke to how disorganized offenses were in those years.
-
Jauron was a symptom of the overall organizational problems plaguing Buffalo in those days. At first I was glad they ended his tenure, but the 2010-2013 seasons revealed nothing had really changed above the HC level. It was still a franchise run by people who were looking out for the owner and reducing costs. Thank goodness those days are over.

Calling all RB and OL Gurus, Your Input Please
BillsVet replied to Hapless Bills Fan's topic in The Stadium Wall
McD is the big voice in roster construction...which makes me leery that anyone is minding the store on how to build an offense around Josh. I'll go a step further and say the HC, after 4+ seasons, still doesn't get offense. If anything, he's still abdicating that side of the ball to Daboll. And of course, McD continues to go after defenders at positions which are nice to have, but not essential like WLB and that 8-9 man DL. Which leads to Beane, who didn't come up the personnel ranks. The only one in the room left to assist in identifying the offensive scheme at a high(er) management level is Daboll and I don't see him strategically being a reliable voice. There are too many in-game decisions for me to believe he's suited to this function. Point is...I really don't know out of McD, Beane, and Daboll how they're aligning offensive personnel to scheme. Because McD is still favoring defensive personnel acquisition over offense, Daboll is well, Daboll and Beane just seems to provide the players McD wants. And I don't see McD changing his spots. -
The SNL Superfans skits of the early 90s pretty much plays out here on TBD every day now. I thought it was one-sided in the late 2000s during the Marv/DJ/Brandon years, but since the Bills shut down their message board it seems like every Bob Swerski, Pat Arnold, and Todd O'Connor has made it here. They're not far off from believing Buffalo will defeat their next opponent seventy tree to two.
