Rd 6, Pick #177: K Dustin Hopkins - FSU
BobChalmers replied to Boludo's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
For those who are unaware - we Bills/Seminoles fans suffered not one but TWO championship-season-killing WIDE-RIGHTS in a single caledar year. That was a tough year. Hopkins is the bomb though - great pickup at 6 - and we just got their beast (broke Rohn Stark's records) P last year don't forget. -
It's not about the Jets messing with the Bills, it's about the Jets being another team that wants a QB, and the idea that now that they have three picks between Buffalo's first and second pick, there is a very good chance they take one QB before they let Buffalo take one away from them in the second. I want in on the bet that Nassib and Barkley are still there for the Bills' 2nd pick - NO CHANCE!!! Both will probably be gone - but I would happily put money out that one of them will be. The money is gone. The fact that Ryan is on the hot seat means he NEEDS a new QB to offer as hope for the future - not sure how being on the hot seat translates for you into sticking with that bust Sanchez.

We lost him because OBD doesn't think the guard POSITION is worth ~$8M/year. How in heck does it make sense to go draft a rookie at #8 for that position????

6 games with teams off Mini or Full bye

The Jets get extra time to prepare against the Bills BOTH games - insane. -

The average number of teams coming off byes on your schedule should be ONE. Another ~1.2 average for getting teams off their Thursday game. With 3 plus the extra 3 Thursday-follows the Bills got screwed hard, and this should be a scandal for the NFL. No team should ever have to face more than one team coming off a bye (unless it's their own bye week) and the idea of getting division opponents coming off their bye when you aren't is a crime. The rough math is straightforward: Every team gets one bye week. They play one other team in their next game - that's 32 games, which if divided evenly would be 1 post-bye opponent per team. If there's a Thursday game every week, that's 17 (I feel like this is only 16 - do they do Thursday the last week?) games x 2 teams for 36 + 2 extra on Thanksgiving and games that have post-Thursday oppenents. 38? total teams coming off a Thursday / spread amongst 32 teams - about 1.2? In a nutshell - the average should be just slightly over 2. SIX is a disgusting screw-job. -
The one position we should not take at 8
BobChalmers replied to bufffan031's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I would say that would make you an exception then, and your personal take on the pick has no bearing on my statement about how the fan base as a whole would react. (Well, OK, it's worth at least 1/(total number of Bills fans) of the answer ) Taking another expensive guard right after you decided your good young veteran wasn't worth the money would be statement of "spinning wheels". In other words, the only way losing Levitre makes sense is that your football "analytics" says the OG position is not where to put your cap money - no way that is compatible with taking a guard at #8 - even as top flight a prospect as Warmack is. -

Not sure why you blur Guards and OLT's together? One of the 3 stud OLT's would be a huge upgrade - sliding Glenn over to replace Pears ORT who is nothing special. Many successful teams start their offense building around a top OLT - even while they are still waiting to find the right QB. Taking a Guard would be a public relations disaster - even a stud like Warmack - given that they just let Levitre go, but a top left tackle is an entirely different animal. So you should be thrilled with the current QB situation, after all we currently have the 2007 draft's top QB (Kolb) on the roster, and we could probably get 2007's 2nd best QB (Trent Edwards) back on the team if we need to. SOME YEARS THERE ISN'T A QB WORTH TAKING HIGH. It doesn't matter how much you want there to be one. Go ahead though, want a little harder and see if it helps. -
Still dismayed by personnel decisions
BobChalmers replied to Dr. K's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
There is zero comparison between those two - Peters was whining for a new contract with 2 years remaining, remember?? -

Speaking of which - that Ozzie Newsome guy sure was a genius upgrading his team by giving us a pick for Evans, eh? THEFT! -
The new tone at OBD: What they're saying
BobChalmers replied to The Big Cat's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Why do people insist on posting obvious non-factuals? It's not fantasy football, with 12 teams in the league, and everyone on your roster needing to be a superstar. 3 legit WR's AND A TE????? REALLY?? So Stevie needs to be benched, or are you benching Spiller and lining 5 receivers out every play?? And where is this DE going to line up? Standing on top of Mark Anderson's head? 3 LBs?? In your version are we cutting Bradham and Lawson?? Or are you lining up in a 3-4, so now what the hell is that DE for again when the DT's play end?? And, do you have to have a "franchise QB" to make the playoffs? Or is that a self-proving statement for you since you measure QB's by wins? And why is everyone convinced Searcy and McKelvin can't be solid starters? With decent coaching, which I think they will finally get, one stud LB is all the defense needs to excel. Defensive team stats vary wildly from year to year - coaching can turn them around quick. One WR, One TE if Chandler can't come back. One QB ideally. They can get that and 1-2 OL in the draft. -
Defensive Formations for Dummies
BobChalmers replied to BringBackFergy's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Many years ago (the 80's?) the Rams had so many DL injuries they went to a 2-5 scheme they called the "Eagle" if I remember right. It was literally 2 DL's and 5 real LB's - again, they did it because they were running out of linemen. As others have pointed out - it does leave you a bit small against run plays behind those 5 big OL who aren't going anywhere. -
How Did Joe Ferguson Rate With Other NFL QB's
BobChalmers replied to Storm Front's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Above average QB - he was my hero growing up - but how can you guys all forget his real reputation on the field?? He was a an interception machine. HE IS WHY THEY WENT TO THOSE GAWD-AWFUL RED HELMETS!!!! Remember? They were hoping his INTproblems would improve if the Bills had different colored helmets than the other 4 AFC East teams - Colts were in the East then, and Pats and Jets helmets were also white at the time. Those ridiculous (literally) red domes were the Fergie helmets. It didn't work. All time archetypal Fergie play: In Dallas for MNF. He falls down in the pocket after his shoe comes off. His sock is trailing a cartoonish 4 feet stretched out from his foot on the ground. He's on his knees, can't see a damned thing from down there - so what to do? Heave it up blindly, obviously! It was picked, of course. -
Have you decided what you want to see in the draft?
BobChalmers replied to White Linen's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
3-down dominant LB if there is one to be had - not a pass-rusher, a big run-stuffer who can cover. If one of the stud OLT's is there at 8, I'm OK with that too. I'd really hope they don't reach on this QB class in round 1 - grab whoever they like in round 2. -
Steve Johnson's interesting tweet.

I live near DC. It's funny - period. IMO, people trying to make something of it are exposing their own problems, not Stevie's. -

Exactly. People who have a problem with his perfectly fine joke are the ones who need to get some maturity. Recurring pattern of WHAT behavior? Being genuiinely funny? Heaven forbid. PS - the Plaxico leg-shot move was hilarious too - and Plaxico would have been the first to say it's nothing more than he (Plaxico) deserved for being an idiot (and shooting himself) - except he was too much the idiot to know to say it!! -
Bills officially sign QB Kevin Kolb
BobChalmers replied to 26CornerBlitz's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I think what we're seeing here is that they are not liking any of this year's QB's and are going to draft other positions and hang in with stop-gaps for 2013. -
The Bills have a few holes to fill

This is where I am = LB - QB - LB

That's fine too - and I hope they will with their 1st pick even if there's a guy who fits the bill and value for their slot. I'm just saying before we even get to the draft in April, you will see the Bills go after ex-Jets and Ravens who already play the roles and styles he's looking for, and if they can get the right ones, those guys are going to be the new leaders. A rookie can only lead so much anayway.

Oh I wasn't assuming it WILL come together - I was just describing my estimate of the PLAN. I admit to also having some optimism based on Pettine's history, but that's irrelevant to what I believe he is/they are doing re: getting players.
