Steve Johnson Should Not Blame God
BobChalmers replied to NaPolian8693's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Agreed - the comments from people who claimed to be so shocked that SJ might have blamed God in a moment of despair are - in my estimation - mostly disingenuous garbage from people who know nothing about faith except that they enjoy seeing others lose theirs. -
Football is a team game, and you have just set a new bar for stupid posts. When a player can dominate in spite of a poor surrounding cast, that's more impressive, not less. The Bills set of LB's - including Poz - combine to form one of the worst units I've ever seen. Kyle Williams can't save them from themselves every play. If Williams weren't on the field for the Bills Sunday, they would have lost by something more like 35-13.

They are bad - though they'd be a little better if the fool players would actually WEAR THEM CORRECTLY!!! The white pants go with the dark jerseys for home. White jerseys with blue pants on the road. Nothing can save the road uni's, but the home uniforms aren't AS bad when worn with the white pants as designed. On close inpspection, they look like complete idiots now, as the pants and jersey stripes don't even line up as designed. Agree, though I'd prefer the early 80's white helmets with the streaking bison. It was essentially just elements of the 60's and 80's looks. The only dumb parts were the font (everyone seems to agree that was bad) and the weird shoulder detail with the stripes going all the way up the sleeves and onto the shoulders.

I don't think we need to use a high pick for LT.
BobChalmers replied to gjv001's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I am completely bewildered by anyone who thinks we need a DL more than an OLB. That is just nuts. And oh, by the way, we just spent last year's 2nd and 3rd round picks on a DE and DT. Are you already calling them busts nine games into their careers? OLB is THE #1 need on this team. There is no close second. Our OLB's are a joke. The 2nd need is either TE or QB depending on how Fitz looks after a full season. And if we're still playing a 3-4, then pass rusher == OLB -

OH PLEASE! Are you going to pretend you weren't on this board for the past few years?? I was one of the few here arguing that a 4-3 is just fine, and that switching to a 3-4 when it's trendy is a mistake because we're competing with more teams for the same player-types, but I was definitely a voice in the wilderness. The fans here, anyway, have been screaming for a 3-4 for years now. Because we play against 3 division opponents who use it successfully (and we were hoping it would help our offense to practice against it), because it starts with larger D-Linemen, which casual fans translate to better run defense, the reasons didn't have to be correct, but they were all there. -
Fitz has played 4 games, not 1. Those 4 games were against two bad pass defenses (NE and JAX) and two good ones (NYJ and BAL). After those 4 games he is currently the #2 rated passer in the NFL. If he continues at his current 4-game pace for the remaining 10, he will end the year with 38.5 TD's and 14 INT's. I'm not saying he will do that for the next 10 weeks, but if he does, he belongs in the pro-bowl. For his pro-bowl consideration, anyone who blames the QB for not winning when he is supported by the NFL's worst defense is an idiot. Why is this so hard to grasp? I didn't even like Fitz at the beginning of the year - I wanted him cut to take pressure off Edwards who I hoped was still salvagable, and I can see it.

Are there any "hidden gems" on this defense???
BobChalmers replied to DUFF's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
"Hidden Gem" is probably not the right word for him, but I think it's fair to say Kyle Williams has been a pleasant surprise to many in his ability to play well as a 3-4 NT. McKelvin has really come on - still a little inconsistent, but he's made a lot more very impressive positive plays this year than negative - definitely improved over past seasons. Obviously, since he's a former first-rounder, he wasn't quite "hidden" but he was getting there. -
LT Bell's injured... Awesome.
BobChalmers replied to BillsBackersChicago's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Well, unless others agree that being injured once, having surgery to repair it, and then taking it easy as the surgery continues to heal, counts as "injured an awful lot", I'd have to say, it's just you - and everyone else here who can't understand the text of the article. -
LT Bell's injured... Awesome.
BobChalmers replied to BillsBackersChicago's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
"Starting left tackle Demetrius Bell(notes) returned to practice Thursday. Gailey says Bell is expected to play, and was given Wednesday off to rest his surgically repaired knee." Dudes, this isn't a new injury. It's just resting his old one. What's wrong with people on this board?? -
It came out last year that the person was Jauron. Your call on if you believe it, but OBD definitely put that out there - about nine months ago, I believe.

Will we make a play for Shawne Merriman?

A lot of those came in the same season he was suspended - he was still benefitting from the 'roids. -
QB In The 1st Is IS Worth It ??
BobChalmers replied to T master's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Really - and here's just the current starters (18 of 32 NFL teams) who were drafted in the 1-st round the OP conveniently ignored: STL Bradford 1-1 DET Stafford 1-1 NYJ Sanchez 1-5 TBB Freeman 1-17 ATL Ryan 1-3 BAL Flacco 1-18 TEN Young 1-3 CHI Cutler 1-11 SFO Smith 1-1 GBP Rodgers 1-24 OAK Campbell 1-25 NYG Manning 1-1 SDC Rivers 1-4 PIT Roethelsberger 1-11 CIN Palmer 1-1 PHI Vick 1-1 WAS McNabb 1-2 IND Manning 1-1 If we get the #1 pick or close to it, we grab Andrew Luck and like it. -
QB In The 1st Is IS Worth It ??
BobChalmers replied to T master's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
So you left out all the successful 1st-rounders and will be surprised you get ripped?? Go to http://www.drafthistory.com/positions/qb.html and look at all the successes and failures at QB in various rounds, then look at other positions in the first round. The fact is busts abound at all positions, and QB is actually no worse than any other. Would you prefer we draft the next Aaron Maybin (DE), Eric Flowers (DE), Mike Williams (OT), or Tony Manadarich (OT)? I believe in building the lines first too, but the truth - when you actually look at the draft history - is that you can screw those picks up too. The safest 1st-rounders have been TE's, btw, but it's also rare that a TE has been viewed as a round one talent. Bottom line is that the best move is to not reach at all, take the best player available (within reason considering team needs) and hope your scouting department didn't screw up. Do please also look at the history of the Super Bowl - just over half the starting QB's were first-rounders. http://www.drafthistory.com/superbowl_quarterbacks.html -
Congratulations to Fitzy
BobChalmers replied to dollars 2 donuts's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
That only works if we keep having 2/3 of our games against crap defenses like Jax and NE. He's doing well for a stop-gap - if he somehow finds a way to stop throwing so many of those "WTF?" level wildly inaccurate throws he could argue to be more. I hear the FAA has had to reroute air traffic away from Orchard Park on Sundays for fear one of Random Fitz's high passes will hit a passenger jet. -
Will we make a play for Shawne Merriman?
BobChalmers replied to Estro's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Correct. He was a creation of modern chemistry. He is absolutely worthless now - which is why SD doesn't mind him being available. One of the most ridiculous things in the NFL-hype machine was how no one in the media stopped singing his praises after he came off his 4-game suspension and continued to lead the league in sacks, etc. As if the effects of his cheating would wear off so fast. Even worse than Cushing still winning RoY over Byrd last season even after he was caught. As soon as Merriman had a full-offseason away from the juice he degraded all the way to useless and hasn't budged since. If you think he wasn't doing steroids all through college as well you are kidding yourself. Without them he is not an NFL talent. -
Where do Good QBs Come From?
BobChalmers replied to NaPolian8693's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
http://drafthistory.com/positions/qb.html good link to quickly see when all QB's were drafted. It's all a risk, but QB's bust rate isn't higher than any other position. This list is particularly remarkable - it's true there are exceptions, but the fact is nearly every Super Bowl involves at least one and often two 1st round QB's. What's a bit odd is that that includes Trent Dilfer, who's never going to be regarded as a top QB or the reason the Ravens were champions, but he _was_ a first-rounder too... http://www.drafthistory.com/superbowl_quarterbacks.html -

agreed -
Actually, at #1 overall it's more like 50/50 that they turn out very well. Obviously there's only one Peyton Manning or John Elway every 10 years or so, but about half of the others have been really good too. There's a list of all the draft picks by position out there if you search for it - I did a couple weeks back - sorry I don't have the link handy.

Peter King Weekend Pickoff
BobChalmers replied to FightinIrishBills's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
If you still don't believe Lynch was only featured over Jackson and Spiller so he could be showcased for a trade, you really are smoking Marshawn's Blunt. -
The results from the D are atrocious. The talent level of the D as a whole is not. The DB's are very good. The DL is fine and has two high-pick rookies waiting for their chance. The talent and play of the LB's are atrocious. Actually, that word doesn't cut it. This are the worst LB unit I've ever seen. The LB's are so bad, in fact, I wouldn't mind them drafting THREE LB's. In a 3-4 the LB's are supposed to generate the pass-rush and ours don't. The LB's are supposed to be able to make a tackle in space, and ours can't - particularly when Andra Davis isn't on the field. Worst case Kyle Williams could be a nice 3-4 DE, in which case, maybe they need a backup NT for Troupe.
-
This team just added a FA DE (Dwan Edwards) and drafted a 2nd round NT (Troupe) and a 3rd round DE (Carrington). None of them have proven to be mistakes. I can't imagine the front office repudiating their own first off-season so quickly as to start looking for yet more DL's any time early in the next year. They need ORT, OLB, ILB, TE, QB, and probably WR before considering adding yet 3 more DL (and discarding the ones they just added).
