I actually like Parenthood. Other than that, I can't think of anything on NBC that I watch...
-
Really? That's the first I've heard of that. What situations?

I don't see the issue.... The vehicle only costs $55-$65k base, and it looks like all Barnett did was give it a custom paint job. Yeah, the $500 in gas is a sticker shock -- but it was over 120 gallons! They said it gets ~10mpg, so he can drive over 1,200 miles before needing to refill. The only thing I was confused about was why he's being called a "former NFL linebacker." He's still in the league, he hasn't filed retirement papers as far as I know. Nobody can sign him until the FA period starts, so ....

Sounds like you had your mind made up and are looking for "facts" to back up why you want to install Windows 7. If that's the case, then go for it - it'll work fine. SameOldBills is 100% correct I think. Windows 8 isn't gaining huge market share yet because people are fine with Windows 7. There's really no compelling reason to blow away 7 and upgrade to 8, and PC sales have been dropping lately for several different reasons. But if you're starting off from scratch, it doesn't make sense to buy 7 anymore. I think the Steam data (from a couple of weeks ago) is very telling -- people who play games on their PC are far more likely to buy new hardware more frequently, which is why 8% of Steam users are running Windows 8. Keep in mind that Surface and Windows Phone are both built upon the Windows 8 kernel as well -- so it's not going anywhere.

Saying someone "hung himself." People are hanged, pictures are hung.

While not a runaway success, I'm sure most companies would be happy with the sales figures of Win8. A month after release, MS had sold 40 million. http://www.neowin.net/news/microsoft-40-million-windows-8-licenses-sold-so-far Here's some data from Steam as well: http://www.neowin.net/news/windows-8-close-behind-windows-xp-in-latest-steam-hardware-survey As for the OS itself - while it's true there's no start menu, you can add it if you really want: http://www.neowin.net/news/stardock-3-million-start8-downloads-version-11-launched

I used the beta. Didn't like the big icons -- they're clearly made for a phone/tablet/touchscreen. That said, you can still get to a desktop and then things work very similar to what you're used to with some improvements to boot. Here's a review from the site I write for (not my review though): http://www.neowin.net/news/review-windows-8-the-hybrid-os-has-arrived

David Frum Opinion Piece on CNN.com
Fezmid replied to Dean Cain's topic in Politics, Polls, and Pundits
Assuming your premise that the NRA are solely responsible for these changes... It prevents the ATF from harassing individual dealers by limiting inspections to only once a year, and prevents the federal government from getting too much power by knowing who has purchased what (separation of powers, have you heard of it?). Why does the Federal government need to know how many guns everyone buys? They don't track the number of cars everyone buys (as far as I know, that's at the state level, but correct me if I'm wrong). So it protects civilian privacy, good to know. I don't see how splitting the ATF from the treasury (why were they connected to begin with???) gives the NRA veto power over the ATF... Seems like a pretty big leap to me. -
Ok, this one is actually pretty funny:

What?! Care to explain what you mean by this? And after reading the rest of your post, I seem to get the impression that you want not only more gun laws, but also more government agents to come out and enforce those laws...?? -
If it's harmful, you're not doing it right...

Basically they're college courses offered online, for free. I don't think you get any "one on one," but there are homework assignments (not sure how grading works...), lectures, etc. It's an interesting concept, and I'll be taking a Computational Photography class next month to try it out. I figured lots of people here might be interested in this course: https://www.coursera.org/course/sports I know a couple of people who have taken classes and like the experience -- you're not going to get a degree out of it, but it seems like a nice way to expand your knowledge.

And Archer doesn't always end happy either.

Sweet, we're ready to run Anderson out of town as our latest scapegoat? -
I hadn't seen this before, but just got an email about it. I did a search, and bam, here it is. So for others who may have missed it, a hearty bump! This is awesome.

I've done some with X10, but it's pretty finicky. (I had a bunch of lights controlled from a central server; when going on vacation, I could write crontabs to turn various lights on and off to simulate turning off the lights in the living room, going up the stairs, hanging out in the office a big, turning those off, going to the bedroom, before turning those off). Worked pretty well most of the time, but the server required a serial port, and when it died, the replacement didn't have serial, so I ditched it. Definitely interested in doing more of this myself at some point, and I've heard good things about INSTEON, but no first hand experience.

The Annual "What are you doing for the Super Bowl?" thread?
Fezmid replied to BillsPride12's topic in Off the Wall Archives
Just got back from the cruise (and subsequent NYC vacation). It was kind of cool watching the Superbowl with all of the different people. They also gave out pompoms and football clappers to everyone which was kind of fun. The food was underwhelming; I was expecting pizza and wings, but neither were served. We started watching the game on the CBS feed, but it kept cutting in and out. I thought the theater was going to revolt and take over the ship. They claimed it was due to "military bases" on the coast, but that makes absolutely no sense since the signal was cutting in and out the entire trip. They eventually switched the feed to... ESPN India. It was the same CBS broadcast, but instead of watching the US commercials, I got to watch the same 5 commercials advertising cricket and soccer... Wheee.... Sat next to a guy who was a Raven's fan... He was a Jet's fan, but since they've been playing poorly, he's now rooting for the Ravens. He even had a Ray Lewis jersey. How do people switch like that? I don't get it. He was psyched at the end, before the safety, because if the score stayed that way he would've won $500. Then Baltimore took the safety and screwed him out of the money. He was not pleased. I say karma for switching teams. Overall, Superbowl on the ship was ok, but I wouldn't do it for a game I cared about (ie: Buffalo). Now I'll have to go online and find the commercials and see if there were any good ones. -
Scott Walker caught a LOT of heat from the left in Wisconsin when he turned down federal funds for a train. "But they're giving us free money!" He (rightfully) pointed out that the state would have to pay for upkeep and couldn't afford it, but the media wasn't listening. They were having too much fun attacking Walker's policies. (the train would've gone from Milwaukee to Madison I believe).

Before or after dropping acid....?

Yeah, a phone screen might be too small to screw with your eyes.

I think Joss Whedon is still higher on the list, personally.
-
I hope he doesn't make it slap stick. As much as I liked the Star Trek reboot, the scene where Kirk's hand is enlarged was just lame.

Apparently don't need to anymore either.
