MS Walk 2013 - "Family Rocks" - May 5th 2013
Fezmid replied to rockpile's topic in Off the Wall Archives
Done! Keep doing what you do! -
Ok, cool, just checking!

You breakdown what the $650 is for, but do you realize that Kickstarter/Amazon takes a chunk of your money? So if you get the $650 you need, you still won't have enough... Plus you'll need to pay to print and ship copies of the script... :/

Hey, I wasn't either -- I had to hunt him down.

I don't think it's an individual post or poster here and there, it's the overall tone of the board in general lately...

Dad works 8am-4pm, mom works 6pm-2am. Someone's always home with the kid. What's the problem? Or maybe don't have a kid if you aren't earning more than minimum wage if you aren't willing to sacrifice. -

Fast food workers make more than minimum wage, at least in Minnesota. When I first moved here in '94, they were paying roughly $8/hour. But even if they don't, why does someone at McDonalds or Taco Bell need more than minimum wage? It's not a career. Walmart workers fall into this category as well -- like I said, I made slightly more than minimum wage when I was at KMart in high school - but should someone who stocks shelves be making a livable wage doing that? Why? Housekeeping gets minimum wage (or slightly above), but also make tips. (you DO tip when you're at a hotel, don't you??) Kitchen workers, I have no idea - I would assume they're making more but I have no first hand experience. I know child care workers make more than minimum wage. -

C'mon, who gets minimum wage nowadays? I was making more than minimum wage when I was in high school working at K-Mart, and my wife hires people with no college experience and even they get $12-$13/hour -- not something I'd want to raise a family with, but hardly minimum wage either. -
Looks like the ban on small knives will be lifted, unless TSA caves to pressure: http://www.cnn.com/2013/03/14/travel/tsa-knives-congress/index.html Which is a start, although TSA needs to go away altogether... I love reading the comments from the idiots who are saying it's still dangerous to allow a knife on board and point out that box cutters took down planes on 9/11. No, guys, the fact that the cockpit door was open and not reinforced was what made that easy. Good luck doing that now. First they remove porn-o-vision machines, now the knife ban. What's next, we won't have to strip to get on a plane? Finally.

Why is Bruce Smith listed as a high need, and why is he on offense?! Seriously though : Why is Mark Anderson listed as a high need for a replacement?

Exactly. If "rich" was $1M 20 years ago, and is $50M now, obviously the rich are getting richer. However, poor can never go below $0, so... Pretty simple math; of course the "gap" is widening. -
Didn't you start another Kickstarter a couple of years back? I don't think you got funded, but did you ever try to do it anyway? If so, how'd it turn out?

Ummm, how does a country hire a lawyer in France to sue filmmakers in the US....? How does that even work? Love the quote. http://www.cnn.com/2013/03/13/world/meast/iran-argo-response/

I think you're misunderstanding my point. I'm not talking about sharing between the desktop and mobile, I'm talking about Microsoft developing a single OS that runs on all of the platforms. Apple's not doing that - iOS is a completely different codebase from MacOS.

Tennessee has no state income tax... After looking at the Flacco situation, I think Levitre is making a heck of a lot more there than he would've in Buffalo, even if we had matched...

I love some of the comments. Pay SS taxes on capital gains? Wow.... It's like (over) half the country has been brainwashed into thinking they can't get ahead in the world, and just want to blame rich people instead of working to improve their lives. My grandparents came here from Italy with nothing. My parents were lower-middle class at best (my mom STILL makes just over minimum wage). And my wife and I are now part of the "evil" 10%. But we worked our asses off to do it. When did America lose its work ethic? -
Companies aren't switching to Chromebooks, at least not in the near term. Not sure why you think Windows is going to disappear soon. In ten years, maybe, but in 1-3? No way. Plus, like I mentioned before, Microsoft is consolidating their code base to support the desktop, tablets, and phones. One OS for them all, and a seamless experience between desktop and mobile. Could be a smart move if Windows Phone catches on. MS also has plenty of cloud offerings. For example, Outlook.com and Office365.com. Then there's this little thing called the Xbox and all of Xbox Live. I remember people saying that the original Xbox was a dumb idea - nobody can beat Sony and the Playstation. Microsoft isn't going to disappear, despite what some in this thread are hoping for.
-
You say that like Windows is Microsoft's core business, which isn't really true anymore. Plus, Windows is still going to make them a boatload of money - you don't think that companies are going to ditch desktops, do you?
-
The difference was that Vista was bad. Win8 is just fine, just not a compelling reason to upgrade. Microsoft knew that before they even launched, which is why they well selling the upgrades for only $40. But people are missing the bigger strategy, which is a unified code base between all of their devices. This will make MS much more agile in the future with phone, tablet, computer and maybe even the Xbox (not sure if that's the same code base). It's really a smart business move, especially since desktops aren't going to disappear for awhile.

The fact that you can't find anything about it online leads me to believe you were reading an advertisement. Companies have been hiding them to look like real news for quite awhile -- Jack asked if it said "Advertisement" was on the page and I'm thinking it probably was, even if you missed it. They're very subtle nowadays. -
You think you were paying $230 for just TV and four receivers? If you had the premier package plus four DVRs, with whole home DVR, you'd still only pay ~$173/month. You either signed up and had more than you thought, or you're misremembering how much your bill was. There's no way it was $230 without premium movie channels and/or premium sports (NHL, NFL, etc). You'd be surprised how much power the local affiliates have. They're the reason you can't watch a game on Sunday Ticket if it's being broadcast locally.
