I disagree. I think its obvious that you have taken your own argument so to heart that you can't even see what we are arguing. You completely dismiss my argument out of hand by saying I can't get past who wrote it. That's false. You took his argument at face value and I--and another poster-looked a little deeper and criticized it, no big deal dude. And your "working together" stuff, that's all fine and well, but I try to live in the real world where people have real disagreements. There is no "will of the volk." Partisanship is natural and healthy. Can't stand the heat?...well, you know -
Several things here. [Why do I always have several things?] Anyway. Not playing gotcha, but can you post a link to several hundred thousand? Most people say 117,000 dead Americans, but there was an army report from 1930[?] or there abouts saying that with deaths from the war it was 400,000 dead. I disagree about casualties relating to internal differences. The repression happened as we went to war, before casualties occurred. So, perhaps, the casulaties Americans saw in European armies caused a backlash before the war, ok. But America was something like 1/3 foreign born or born of immigrants at the time. New York state certaintly was. That's not true today. On top of that, the Germans had old communities that were very seperated from the rest of society, Kaiser Town in Buffalo, for example. The Irish were an older immigrant group that tended to stay sepertaed, also. And the Ottoman comparison I do not like because American is very different in the fact we have an economy that allows for people to assimilate easier. It keeps people busy and relatively happy. My point is, we were much more diverse and divided in 1917 than we are now
-
What???? The United States was a very diverse and divided nation in 1917. All those immigrants from 1870 and beyond were considered outsiders. Internal repression had to be resorted to to keep the country in the war, the draft going, etc. Wilson won the 1916 election pledging to keep us out of the war and then went in. The Germans, Italians, Irish, socialists and Populists were all repressed. Buffalo's German language press was closed, for example. So were many socialist papers. Many were arrested and thrown in jail. Had the war lasted who knows what would have happened. No wonder we went isolationist after that. We were much more divided then than now. Wilson had to basically ruin the Democratic party--his own party!--to keep us in the war. When people say Bush was the worst President ever, I say look at Wilson, another Southern idiot who was worse!

You may be right, but I could see some people in the vast Catholic community sending in money, especially if they have influencial members in the church. Plus he is in the Heritage Foundation and that means connections to big money there. But maybe I'm making a mountain out of mole hill and this guy is just pumped up by reporters who need a story. Controversy does sell
-
Wow! That would be cool! Few problems though, never had a girlfriend go get an abortion, I don't have any piercings, not gay, don't like latte, and I work hard. Those socialist, pond scum liberals wouldn't like me!

X, I think they are a bigger organization than you are making them out to be. Well funded with many high profile members, they get exposure because they have money and members. http://www.catholicleague.org/faqs.htm

1) They attack Democrats, but haven't picked up this story....think! 2) This from the guy who thinks Cheney is more believeable than the entire press! I know there are liberal media sources, I read some of them. But you try and say the entire media is lying about things like Iraq. Big difference -
It's a site that reports on the media. They are reporting a major story--if its true. You can watch it yourself on their link to Chris Matthews show. I'll note that Joe Klein disagreed with Andrea Mitchell that Gen Petraeus met with Republican Senators and was told Iraq better be straightened out by August or they are dropping their support of the war/occupation. I went to the Chris Matthews site but they do not have transcripts up yet from today. No one is reporting on this yet, so we shall see. It might be bogus--Klien thought so--but if not it is interesting for many reasons. 1 It is the light at the end of the tunnel and the timing makes sense. What Republican wants to run for office supporting that abortion of an occupation? And Labor day of the year before gives the people enough time to forget about Iraq if we left. With primaries coming up for 2008 election, the timing really does make sense. 2 Why is Petraeus meeting only with those people? Democrats are not dying in Iraq, too? 3 She said also that many Republicans didn't believe in the surge, but voted for it anyway. Go figure. Yup, just like the Dems in 2002 Maybe this is a tempest in a teapot, or there is something to it, we shall see, or maybe we won't!

But word of the confectionary Christ infuriated Catholics, including Egan, who described it as "a sickening display." Bill Donohue, head of the watchdog Catholic League, said it was "one of the worst assaults on Christian sensibilities ever." Ever!

What the hell they so upset about? You think Jesus is mad? LOL http://www.cnn.com/2007/US/03/30/chocolate...s.ap/index.html The hotel and the gallery were overrun Thursday with angry phone calls and e-mails. Semler said the calls included death threats over the work of artist Cosimo Cavallaro, who was described as disappointed by the decision to cancel the display. _________________________ Does anyone think we will have an atheist president anytime soon? I don't

Tom, you are an idiot. Allow me to explain. Every single other politician in the country does not steer contracts to their spouse. That's just stupid. I don't know how you got me being partisan out of asking if a fellow Democrat should be arrested, but I guess that goes back to your idiocy. -

Bias? Then why isn't the Republican party's media mouth piece covering the story either? Fox 'news' hasn't mentioned it at all. I searched there website and nothing. Going with this story, IMO, would be akin to printing rumors. What is this media outlet that went with the story? And they were going on a lead from the Nation, a respected Liberal media source, to be sure, but the problem is, they haven't released the story yet. So keep it up. Pretty soon you will catch the "liberal" media in the act, just not this time. -

I don't know how I missed this priceless post before! Two things 1) We don't need George Will telling us should all be nice to each other. I very much got the idea behind cooperation when I watched Seasame Street as a child. There isn't anything really new about that idea. You see, when many of us fundamentally disagree on policy and such, we are not going to work together, we are going to try and win votes to see our side prevail. Welcome to democracy! I have no love for Alaska Darin, but when he makes fun of the "Can't we all just get along" crowd, by saying he wants to buy the world a coke, I get a chuckle. Maybe George Will should buy Amereia a Coke? 2) When you say we can't get past Will writing the column you are totally ignoring our criticism of what he wrote. Did you read our posts you are replying to? Try reading them again and get back to us. It's not that Will wrote the piece its's what he wrote. -

An Inconvenient Truth...

This is the first time I have even looked at this thread, I think. You guys think I'm some far left liberal because I think Bush is a disaster as president. Well, newsflash to the right wing faithful, YOU guys are the fringe now. A pretty large majority of Americans consider Bush to be an idiot and a bad president. Also seems like the far right wing agenda has been rejected, too. Good! I was strongly against the war from the start. Does that mean I'm an environmental wackjob? No. I care for the environment and all, but it is not a motivating factor in how I vote when all the other issues are taken into consideration. -

I don't propose anything! I'm just stating a fact and drawing a conclusion. And the breakdown of the extended family has a lot more to do with other factors than just the women not being chained to the home and kids. I'm not sure its a bad thing, either. I suppose its a matter of what you like -

LOL, your dog probably humps the mailman's leg, then. Tom probably has a dog that mindlessly barks at anything that moves, and everything that doesn't move and Wacka probably leaves the radio on Rush Limbo for his dog when he goes out -

Perhaps its a sign of the growing isolation of so many people. Families are smaller and in many cases farther apart. Pets provide a stability and love that is lacking, I guess. What's stranger, people's love of pets or of sports teams? Have you ever tried to explain to a non-sports fan why you love the Sabres?
