I was very much against the war and am against the surge also. I, like many, don't see any good options. I just don't think the surge will work. The way I look at it is that our military cannot push an economic, social, cultural and political revlution onto a country in a "surge time line." You know, shock therapy doesn't really work, especially in this case. Creating a free market republic requires changes at every level of society, in the way it thinks, acts and views the world. It takes evolution, not revolution. Even if the goal is just stability, I think a good argument can be made that our being there undermines that by simply being the outsiders, attracting jihadists and resentment.

Well.....he was the first Whig president and he up and dies on them. Leaving that puss eating maggor Tyler in the oval office. During Tyler's term our Millard Fillmore pushed through a spending bill to finance--i.e. "invent"--the telegraph. He's our Al Gore! Harrison's death was a real bummer for the north. The south had basically controlled the government from the beginning of the nation with the exception of the two Adam's administrations. Harrison was going to be a Hamiltonian type prez and Tyler was not. The following election was very interesting. In 1844 the Liberty Party, an anti-slavery party, won enough votes to just barley give the election to James K. Polk, who then launched the Mexican War under very questionable circumstances. The 1848 election was interesting because the Whigs ran a slaveholder Zac Taylor who turned out to be a Free Soiler. He died--or was killed!!!--and our Millard Fillmore became President. Ain't ya proud of him? Taylor's body actually was dug up and tested for poison a few years ago.

You forgot that we should bail out the rich when capitalism fails -

Come on people: Spitzer was brought down because he legally withdrew cash from a bank – not because he committed a crime. This should prompt us to reassess and hopefully reverse this trend of pervasive government intrusion in our private lives. We need no more Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act! What we need is more government transparency and more privacy for the individual -

He had to see it coming. Democratic state Sen. Doug Jackson, D-Dickson, got his Stephen Colbert close-up on Thursday night when he was profiled as a "Difference Maker" for his proposal in the legislature to allow gun-permit holders to take their firearms into bars, or any place that serves alcohol. As Colbert introduced the report, he said Jackson is out to put the "loon" back in "saloon." Jackson explained his reasoning for the bill, saying "I think the right to keep and bear arms is as American as apple pie, baseball and hot dogs." To explain his point further, the producers spliced in shots of Jackson at the gun range using his double-barreled piece to blast away at — you guessed it — an apple pie, a baseball and a hot dog. And what piece of political comedy about guns in Tennessee bars would be complete without interviews of gun-toting self-identifying rednecks in bars, including one who demonstrated how to use a gun as a pool cue. The full video is available at comedycentral.com. Tennessean.com lists other progressive legislation offered by Jackson, such as the "girls gone wild" bill, the "mental patients with guns" bill and the "rename the state fish" bill. http://www.tennessean.com/apps/pbcs.dll/ar.../1054/OPINION03

Saddam's Terror Links

I'm sorry, but the breathless idiocy behind this statement stunned me into silence yesterday. I just didn't know where to begin. First off, terrorism is a tactic, as I'm sure you know. So a war on "it" doesn't make any sense at all. Secondly, how do you define what a terrorist act is? Just because it's low tech? More likely because its used again those we don't want it to be, Israelis for instance. Your statement opens us up to become involved in every single little grievence the world over. I think most Americans would want us to concentrate on getting those behind 9-11. That would be fine and dandy, to most people here, instead of launching a crusade against the crime of blowing things up. Tht's why Bush worked so hard to convince America that Saddam was behind 9-11. What would have been wrong with just focusing on the ones that attacked us? Why does the Palistinian/Israeli conflict necessarily have to be our problem? Most terrorism is local. 9-11 was an exception to that rule. Your "Global War on Terrorism" if carried out to take on all "terrorism" would take us to every part of the world and committ us to something we are in no way capable of handling. -
In your world, steak and cow sh-- are the same thing because they both come from a cow

Not exactly. Johnson was running around declaring light at the end of the tunnel, progress and the virtual end of the war there. Then the Vietnmese smuggled weapons and fighters into every major area of south Vietnam and launched spectacualr attacks. How could they have done that if thing were going so well? What did it tell people that the enemy was able to infiltrate the entire f'n country and no one knew. Why didn't the South Vietnmese tell us? The attack showed how rotten to the core was the war effort, and it exposed many of the lies the Johnson administration had been telling.

Darn, if everyone would just fall in line behind Bush everything would be fine.
