Start from scratch.. Hire Peterson and Schottenhiemer
cale replied to jms62's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Petersen did a great job with the Chiefs - but lately the game has passed him by. I'm for finding the rising star GM. I think that guy is none other than Chris Polian in IND. Whether he would come is another question. Greg Gabriel in Chicago would be good. Charlie Casserly did a good job in choosing the talent for the Texans. Phil Savage is a great talent evaluator and is from the Ozzie Newsome tree. Someone from the Giants front office would be good as well. I'd also take AJ Smith - he's a true and true football guy. Or Buddy Nix. Also Floyd Reese has a good track record. He is fiery though - so expect him to be gone in about 3 years. While we're at it, can we fire Littman and Overdorf? C -
I think Trent overthinks and is overcautious. Sometimes he has to trust that the guy is throwing to is gonna make the play. That being said I don't think the receivers other than Evans & Reed have given him much reason to trust them. Still he's rapidly becoming Captain Checkdown and that just plain sucks. I see now why Futzchild didn't give the QBs the option to audible. Our QBs just audible into disaster. C

Though I think Sherman would have been a marginal improvement. I can't think of a stellar candidate from that list. Maybe Jim Caldwell - but he remains an unknown quantity. Also I'm not sure Dom Capers would have been a bad hire. The guy did fine in Carolina - but he did have Bill Polian running the show. I still think the best guy we could have hired post Marv would have been John Fox. Sure Coughlin has had the best success. But I think either Ralph and Coughlin would have killed each other. Plus the fans and media would have probably fired him after three seasons because of his idiosyncrasies. Hell we chased Wade out of town for not wearing a helmet. I remember reading that Jim Fassel was a top candidate and that Donahoe wanted to hire him as the first choice - but Fassel rejected the offer. Gregg-O was actually the consolation prize. Since I think Marvin Lewis was seriously considered for the job. How bad do you have to be in order to be rebuffed for the Bungles C

Anyone notice that after teams whoop us, they end up becoming world beaters? AZ, Jets, SF, Dolphins, Browns (at least for 2 games). See how the Jets do after they play us this weekend. Brett Favre is gonna look like the 2nd coming of...well - Brett Favre (The good version 2.0). C
-
Amen, Sir. I am not upset at this team losing. I'm upset at the way they lose. Sure we beat teams with losing records. Now we're even losing to teams with losing records and we don't seem to care - top to bottom. At least it seems like Brandon is upset. Good. Hopefully that translates to a better plan going ahead.

http://myespn.go.com/blogs/afceast/0-4-502...lls-choked.html What's most disturbing is what Ralph says - "It's not the coaches?" Aw - crap - it's gonna be a long off season. C

The more I think about this - the more I like the Spags idea. My only reservation is that I feel like we need a been there, done that kinda guy. I know Spags comes from a winning team, but all things being equal (and I'm not sure they are) - I'd like a Cowher or a veteran coach that the players will buy into. I also hear that Del Rio might be let go, that would be intriguing. C

Wilson apparently livid over the last 2 games...

If we lose in Toronto - in fact if we are downright embarrassed by a first year coach of the Dolphins team in our debut regular season game in Canada, I'll bet dollars to donuts that Jauron is shown the door sooner than later. So here goes (gulp) - Go Dolphins! -
I knew it was a problem when I couldn't get to his blog this AM. C

Marty Schottenheimer, Mike Sherman ...??

I think John Fox's contract is up. I'd love to see him here. He has a pretty blue collar style. He then could possibly convince Delhomme to come here for 1-2 years. I'd prefer McNabb but I'd take Delhomme. In an ideal world, Fox is let go. Cowher ends up coaching Panthers (he lives in NC) and then Fox comes here. As for Cleveland, I see them then making a run at Mariucci. C -
Bulger would be intriguing. I don't know about Tebow, if we're high enough to pick Tebow, I'd seriously consider it. We fiddle farted about that with Cutler on the board. He would have been the perfect post Kelly Buffalo QB. Other than that, I'd go for the best pass rusher or interior OL on the board. We also need a money TE. Fine might be that guy. Maybe with enough reps Schouman is that guy, It;s hard to tell with this team right now. Their confidence is shot. And it's not clear to me that the best 11 guys on each side of the ball are on the field. I'd take a swing at Kellen Winslow Jr. if he comes cheap. C

I'm not gonna totally discount everything Jauron has done here. I believe he was the right man at the right time at OBD. If you recall morale was low and the football side of things was chaotic. So we did need a calming influence. I believe Jauron filled that role admirably. But now, it's time to move on with someone who can light a fire under these guys and inspire them to greatness. Jauron is like a nice father figure. But you don't want him leading people into battle. We need a guy with a certain confidence about him, because he has been there and done that. He *knows* a certain methodology will work because he has seen it work. Jauron is not that guy. FWIW, I think Coughlin with his track record would have been a lousy hire at the time. I don't think the team at that time would have taken to him very well. And I almost guarantee he would have PO'd Ralph. Then it would have been more team turmoil. Just because a coach has been successful elsewhere, does not guarantee the same thing would have been the case here. C

I meant to add that we need a vet free agent QB. Forgot. Yes, I think if McNabb is willing to come and play for 2-3 years at a reasonable cap hit, I'm for it. I think the biggest problem in developing a QB is that we haven't had a good vet guy the rookie/green QB can learn from here in a long time. I'm also for more making a run at Garcia. I'm sick and tired of kid gloving QB psyches around here. Win and we'll support you. Lose and we'll sit your ass. C

The problems with this franchise I used to think was that we didn't want to spend for talent. I don't think that anymore. I think we *have* talent on this team. I think the problem simply is a systemic and cultural issue. It's not enough that we find a "good" coach. We need to find a coach who has won/been in the Superbowl. At least as an assistant. I think these guys and the coaches work hard - but it's not work that's enough or work that's smart. It would also really help, if that coach has won in the era of the salary cap. In the past we've hired coaches post Levy that have had some success but not in a SuperBowl. Gregg Williams went to a Superbowl - but that organization was successful because of one guy, Jeff Fisher. And even then he did not win. What needs to happen is that we need to get someone who has won with organizations like the Patriots, Giants, Steelers, Colts who have seen success and know what it takes. Once we find that guy we need to tell him that he has to bring the blueprint, none of this "this is how the Bills do it" bull sh--. He also had to hold guys accountable. I don't feel like there's any accountability on this team anymore. Unfortunately I don't think the owner is into that anymore since Donahoe. We need to bring a guy in who knows what a winning football culture looks like. I think the guys who would fit that mold are: Top preferences: 1) Bill Cowher (throw enough money and power at him and he *will* come) 2) John Fox (if there was somehow we can get him, he'd be a great fit) 3) Steve Mariucci 4) Jim Fassell 5) Steve Spagnuolo (Giants DC - consistent in 2 seasons. I think he's the next up and coming dude) Second tier coaches: 1) Marty Schottenheimer 2) Bobby April 3) Brian Billick (sure he's a blowhard - but he has a swagger to him) 4) Russ Grimm 5) Jason Garrett (stock has fallen a little bit) The bottom line is we need football guys who have had success running the show. None of this incestuous promotion from inside business for now. Frankly, we haven't had success inside to justify it. The guy also has to be able to handle the great pressure that he'll obviously feel in BUF.

How I wish we went after Brees 2 years back...

Don't forget who drafted him. AJ. Think Mr. Smith would have drafted JP? C -
YES WE WON - but why is everyone talking playoffs still
cale replied to Poeticlaw's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
It's because we are on drugs...the really good kind... -
Yes, plus it's only "running up the score" if it's perpetrated on the Bills. When the Bills do it, it's just "building our confidence." C

Just to add: 1) Butler is our best OL. He makes our OL better. I never thought that was possible. But his nastiness is a real asset. 2) I was wrong, wrong, wrong per Josh Reed. He's a man! He was like a coach out there with the offense. 3) Cut Royal in the offseason. I can't believe Guy gets paid to find players like RR. Get Fine in on the rotation more often. Our TE rotation should be: 1) Fine 2) Schouman 3) Royal. 4) Pass rush, TE and Center should be a priority in the offseason. LBs are easier to find in FA. I'd even try Kellen Winslow Jr. out. If we can backload his contract and make sure he isn't a head case. 5) Our D still blows when there is a decent passer and a decent run blocking line on the other side. They just double Stroud. Game over. 6) Steve Johnson needs to get more playing time. 7) McKelvin is worthy of a 1st round pick. Whitner is not. Whitner is a better player right now. He'll be solid for us for years to come. But 1st round players are game changers. McKelvin is changed the game for us today. Ngata should have been our pick. He changes games. Why didn't the coaches and FO listen to Levy? C

IMO Best Play Of The Game Was McGee's Rundown!!

Terrence "The Ghost of Beebe" McGee -
We lose to MIA, NE & NYJ. 8-8. No playoffs. We suck.

That's because the coaches let him play. funny how that works out. Prior to this they didn't let the guy play. The injuries forced their hand. If we were relatively healthy, we still wouldn't see him play. Plus this is also KC. C
-
You're kidding right? KC's pass rush is worse than our pass rush. They have no dominant DT in the middle who could stop our run without needing a double team and they don't play a 3-4 with multiple look formations. They also didn't flood the passing lanes like every team did the past few weeks against us. I'm glad Trent got to get into it today. That can only help us. But I'll wait to see how he does in our next AFC matchup. C

Do we like Trent, Jauron and Turk this week?
cale replied to The Poojer's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
What he said. I think the biggest plus here was that we did not beat ourselves in a myriad of ways. KC is a really bad team right now. So this was good the Bills confidence. This still does not make me believe that we will not fold our tent and Go Home when we meet a team that is of a better quality. I still didn't see enough fight in this team. But they did not need it against KC. C -
I give you the 2009 Buffalo Bills head coach...
cale replied to 1billsfan's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Remember the tastefully named "Gregg Williams"? The Titans success is a product of Fisher's coaching and having a man mountain named Haynesworth in the middle.. It ain't Schwartz. Go check out the stats of this D when Haynesworth was out on injury and suspension. C
