Amen. Reading elsewhere - the Dockery move (ie. overpaying) was the right thing to do. Problem was we didn't overpay for the right guy. For that we can blame John Guy. Every media outlet at the time was surprised that we payed that much money for Dockery. But they were pleasantly surprised that the Bills actually played and were aggressive. I think we overpaid for Walker as well. But at least that dude can block. At the time, I thought Dockery was the better investment. The real dumb move would have been to keep Dockery after us overpaying and he under performing.

Guys come cheaper when you have success. If you were an NFL FA would you pick the Bills and give them a discount on the possibility of going to the playoffs/championship? Didn't think so. We have an unproven QB, a suspect pass rush, and a so-so OL. We have a blue chip WR and RB (when he isn't being arrested). I haven't even mentioned our coaching staff. Success breeds success. Right now we have zilch. Ergo, we have to overpay to get respectable talent. Unless those players: a) Have a soft spot for BUF b) Are on the downside of their careers. c) Just losers. C

It looks like the guy would rather go to CIN than come to the Bills. How messed up is that? How screwed up do we have to be to look worse than CIN.

Who Would You Rather Have................................
cale replied to H2o's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Cutler if you want a QB. Trent if you want poise and hair. -
I can't believe the Bills cut him cause they didn't want to pay the $4.5 million for this year. If he gets traded isn't it off our books? Esp. if Detroit and Washington were vying for his services. WTF? I would think we would have gotten at least a 4th round pick.

I really, really like this signing. I wanted Garcia here, but he is not going anywhere where he isn't going to be the big cheese. Fitzp. is a good player. He is a leader. He might not have a super arm, but he is very savvy. This signing doesn't threaten TE, but if he regresses Fitz can step in more than adequately. This is a Holcomb type signing, except this kid has b*lls. C

Dockery did nothing to earn his contract. Same with Royal. I like these cuts because it removes guys who were *only* for the most part locker room lawyers. I'm sure they talked to Dockery's agent to restructure. But I doubt DD wanted to do it. C

I've hated John Guy since end of his first season. I've been on record here many times as to the piss poor job he has been doing. He is now part of the "inner circle." God help us.

Second day pick or FA signing...
-
The guy went almost 3 months before commenting. This is the first time in a long time that I haven't seen a coach make end of season address in a press conf. He's too much a coward to address fans and the press after he was retained. I expect things on the field will take the same tenor.

Now...*that* was the post of the day... Our decidely masculine QBs aren't helping us win...Hell, I'm for a female QB with balls and gumption coming in here and embarrassing these bunch of overpaid *&%^$# into overperforming in their respective roles. I don't care. I just want them to play with some fire. If it's flaming, so be it... C

Lets see how many of you can guess our new #2 QB

Ryan Fitzpatrick would be great. He doesn't have a great arm. But he is smart and knows the game. I realize this sounds like Trent. But I remember him playing in STL, and how for his first start, he knew exactly where to go with the ball. I Like him. -
I'll be the first to admit I'm not an OL technique connoisseur. But he didn't seem to be half bad when I watched the home town T*t* play. He's no Metz - but compared to who we have, he's the second coming of Sam Gash. He also studied under Munchak. Which isn't a bad thing. It drives me nuts to see the middle of the field open for the taking on passing plays and we can't take advantage of it unless Reed is in there. Or worse Royal drops the damn ball. If Bo wants something upwards of 4mil/yr I think we keep looking, but other than that I'd give him a close look. C

Oh, I absolutely agree that we should draft someone. But to think we can develop one in-house is just silly. The last guy we had that was was Riemersma. TN is a run first team. In our short passing RAC system, he could potentially do well. Bottom line is he is a relatively inexpensive (yep, inexpensive - compared to what we're paying Royal (just under 2.5 mil)) for a guy the other team actually game plans for. Is 3 mil a lot of scratch for an above average player? Sure. But it's gonna have to be *at least* that for anyone to consider coming to BUF. Seems like a fair trade for a guy that could be a good security blanket for the 2nd coming of Captain Checkdown. We have the cap room. C

I'd give Scaife a 3-4 year contract worth about 3mil/year with incentives. That's about it. Right now a cadaver would be an upgrade over Robert "I'm The King" Royal. I'm optimistic about Fine but I don't think he is a sure thing. Scaife at least is kinda like a poor man's Witten. C

Biggest Difference Between Bills and 09 Super Bowl Teams
cale replied to truth on hold's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I'd say the biggest difference was coaching. But IMHO Tomlin almost lost that game for the Steelers. I thought Whisenhunt outcoached Tomlin. But the biggest difference in my opinion is that Steelers had more playmakers. The list includes but not limited to Roth-berger, Holmes and Harrison. Even a gimpy Ward made some plays. Which brings me to the Bills. I think on every team there are role players and playmakers. We ask our role players to be playmakers. I think our bona fide playmakers are Evans, Lynch and McKelvin. You can make a case for Freddie Jackson too I think. But I look at our D and I just don't see enough or any playmakers. McKelvin maybe - but he definitely needs seasoning on defense. As a ST I think he is a stand out. As a footnote, I thought Stroud in the first game was going to be our defensive playmaker - then he fizzled out a little bit. C -
v-coach - Bob Sanders hired as d-line coach
cale replied to Coach Tuesday's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Typical, right? We've got bigger problems than who we hire as DL coach. -
I'm ecstatic that they added Nix. He is truly a football guy ala Dwight Adams and AJ. Guy had better step his game up. I see this as a precursor to taking over pro player personnel. I still ditching my Sunday Ticket - but our college draft should be a good one, if they let Nix do his job. Yay.
-
If there's still an Orakpo on the board and we take a TE, I think that would be a stupid move. Again, you build a team with the lines. And right now our DL is hurting. We don't throw enough to a TE to make the #11 pick a worthwhile pick. I don't know much about Pettigrew - but unless he is the second coming of Gonzales or Gates in his prime, I'm against this. C

In some ways I think Marv was an alchemist. He certainly made some magic with the ingredients. I thought he sucked rocks as a game day coach. The reason we lost those SBs IMHO was because he expected his players to be men and act responsibly and rise to the occasion. I thought short of that first SB, the team self destructed off and on the field. Even the team leaders couldn't maintain discipline and focus when push came to shove. A strong coach would have corralled those guys - but it was obvious again - that Marv is a hands off guy and let's people do their jobs. Problem is sometimes people just don't fulfill their responsibilities. Marv is not the kind of guy who then holds their feet to the fire. I'm a Top Chef fan and tonight one of the guest judges said, "When you open a restaurant you have to assume people are not gonna do their jobs. It's the only way to be successful." I wonder sometimes if that's not Belichick's mantra. So he micro plans and manages. C

Marv Levy on Howard Simon this morning
cale replied to RShirley's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I know, right? It's as if every team is perfect. The biggest equalizer is coaching. And currently we just don't have it except maybe in special teams. -
Amen. I'm not sure if hiring DJ at the time was the wrong move. For a young team learning how to win and a franchise needing stability the Bills needed someone to quiet the waters, I think Jauron was fine as the father figure type. Calm demeanor, intense but pleasant. But teams evolve, and DJ hasn't adapted. Keeping him now is absolutely the wrong move. Peyton Manning continuously gives Jim Mora Sr. credit for developing him into the player he is today. But Dungy was the guy to take the franchise to the next level. Jauron short of a miracle will be fired at the end or before next season. The Bills record will be worse than this season. The other teams in our div. have vastly improved - with the exception of maybe NE. But they were great to start with. C

I love Marv, it's probably why I am a football fan. But Marv was just a little more than a figurehead when he was brought in as GM. He was just steering and letting people under his supervision do their jobs and build consensus. Unfortunately those people haven't done very good jobs. Marv's error was presuming that the rest of the personnel in the organization were the same kind of people he had when he was with the Bills the first time around. Thereby allowing him to delegate and maintain a hands off approach. Unfortunately, that was not the case. C

I think Kollar was an upgrade over Tim "I'll Wrestle You" Krumrie - but really I don't think he was indispensable. Funny how much better of a coach you become when you have better talent. C

Gruden - when he first signed - was reported to have fa lot of say on personnel. Allen had final say - but there was heavy input by Gruden. Here is the USA Today link: http://www.usatoday.com/sports/columnist/s...-saraceno_x.htm "The Glazer family handed Gruden the wheel to the Bucs' ship when they gladly permitted general manager Rich McKay — the man who rebuilt the franchise along with former coach Tony Dungy — to sail off for division rival Atlanta. No replacement has been named, but it's safe to say that it will be someone who won't challenge the coach often on personnel issues."
