You can see him giving up yardage to make his incredible cuts at times, yeah. You win some you lose some. Common ground -
Shady's value to the Bills...
2020 Our Year For Sure replied to eball's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
He's a good back and a blast to watch. He runs with a determination that comes from having a chip on his shoulder. He wants those big plays bad I just don't think his style is a great match. But I said this after we gave him all that money, if he helps us reach the playoffs and wash off the stink , he's worth every penny. Another reason why it's not about his play in a vacuum. -
Shady's value to the Bills...

He'll forego the 7 yard gain to cut outside and try to make a big play. And then come back and do the same the next play. Sometimes that results in less yardage. He's also one of the most elusive backs there is so you win some you lose some. He regularly makes something out of nothing, though G Ro doesn't need his backs to do that as much as past Bills coaches have because he knows how to open holes for em. McCoy is insistent on choosing his own hole which to me works better in a more spread offense like Andy Reid's or Chip's. Roman's offense is power run designed for a back to set up his blocks and get up the field in a hurry. One cut runners with power to tack on yards at the end of the run are the optimal fit. It'll work fine because he's a good back working with the best run game coordinator in the league. There were 2 or 3 games this year we wouldn't have won without standout performances from Shady including Color Rush against the Jets, shouldn't be overlooked. But in this system we'll squeeze more juice from a back of the same caliber but who moves up the field aggressively and wants to go with the play and grind. Just one take o course, I don't foresee a huge dropoff when he moves on. -

What Kolby at WR does for the Bills right now

Nice tools to work with for a 6th rounder yessir. Let's see if Lal is as good as we've been telling ourselves he is. I could see Listenbee getting reps this year because he seems able to track it and catch it. Roman loves his buttonhook routes and newbie may get a cup of coffee just doing that and blazing 9 routes in certain 3 WR sets. -

He's a good back but an awkward fit with Roman. We'll ride it out for another year or 2 and then Jonathan Williams all day. -

Some post-draft thoughts

Shaq and Aaron Schobel ran an identical 7.16 3-cone. Schobel was 6'3 and a half, 263 lbs. Schobel may be more of a bender but Shaq has more power and will bull rush a lot of tackles. Guys who can get sacks like that make a lot of money in this league. The third rounder is also a rusher rather than a plugger. -
I agree with most of this. You're preaching to the choir with regard to the need to get better on the offensive line, the need to sustain drives better, problems with Rex like penalties, late play calls, lack of discipline, poor game management. I've ranted about the mismanagement of the RT position last year after Bulaga turned them down. This year, however, different story with money so tight. Jordan Mills was by their evaluation the best they could afford. The only thing I'm taking up for, I believe, is this year's draft. I think if you look closely you'll find an impressive marriage of need and value that we could not have achieved by forcing the selection of weaker positions in this year's pool.

Some post-draft thoughts

I like your rundown here Marty, which is easy because I agree with almost all of it. To the quoted, time will tell. My money is on Mills starting in Baltimore opening day. -
You're absolutely right about the need for this team to churn out first downs better than they did last year. It is integral to the run & stop the run, conservative game management style the Bills approach the game with. If you think Whaley is on board with the picks just to give Rex rope to hang himself with, I have to disagree. I found it interesting watching Whaley's interviews how much more relaxed he is with Rex by his side than when he's in front of the cameras by himself. No question about it, these two get along. Rex talks about how they see things the same way and I think the GM is happy to be with Rex rather than Marrone. I say this as a Rex detractor. Whaley has been at his best acquiring defensive players. He comes from Pittsburgh, tough creative blitzing 34 defense and a power running game. He tells the media exactly how the picks are going to be used on the field. there is a shared vision here between the two of them, for better or worse. I don't doubt Whaley when he says they approach the draft looking for a meeting of value and need. I think if you look at the board at the time of each pick its easy to make a case for each selection being strong value, stronger than a run blocker that was available. and all picks were needs to varying degrees. They drafted Miller because he's theoretically a strong run blocker. He fits what we do. They tried to sign Bulaga last offseason. Jordan Mills is the guy they think of as the set-the-floor veteran at RT. They spent 1.7m for him in a year when there's no money. That's our free agent signing, and we got a preview of him last year where he did alright. Whaley was asked if they thought about drafting offensive line and immediately (and with his guard down with Rex next to him) said they thought about it the whole way but the value just wasn't there. What I'm suggesting is they understand the need to finish the line, they're just not willing to pass up studs at need positions for lesser prospects on the OL.

It's a lot calmer at the new stadium than it was at the old one. Like Nanker I think you'll be okay.

2016 NFL Draft Grades

I was dying to get your boy Kyle Murphy in the 6th after watching a video you'd posted. Alas he went to a front office that knows what they're doing and a coaching staff that can develop players so good for him. -
How would you rank the AFC East draft classes
2020 Our Year For Sure replied to mob16151's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Me too. They didn't go OL and yet I can't argue with it. Really like what we've done here adding value player after value player and all guys that fit the plan on the field.Whaley and Rex seem to be working well in concert. -
This is my favorite pick this year. It's a bigger need than some of the thread's early responders realized. It's a little like the Darby pick last year in that it makes more sense once you've had time to chew it over. Both McCoy and karlos are injury risks and Shady is gone in a year or three. This gives them a one cut and up the field runner who will go with the play, with the power to tag on yards on the end of the run. I'm picturing Frank Gore running wild in Roman's offense...this seems a truly perfect fit. Throw in the surprising elusiveness for such a big guy, and his instincts as a runner. Maybe I'm over excited but I think we just hit a home run here that will help this offense for a long time. He probably plays this year one way or another.

I was dying for OT but the board never seemed to go that way. All the top ones went in the first and the cupboard seemed bare in terms of value until maybe the 5th or 6th. The Bills let the board come to them and took care of their needs which were a strength in this year's field. They followed the value. Next year is a whole new buffet.

Who do you hope the Bills draft on day 3?

Couple names our experts have talked about are OT Joe Haeg and OT Kyle Murphy. Watched a little of Murphy at one point, tenacious player who just needs to add muscle. -
