QB still open competition
2020 Our Year For Sure replied to WIDE LEFT's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
In hindsight we know Arizona was misguided in giving up that much for him- it didn't work out, and Ken Wisenhunt with job on the line chose to run with Skelton rather than re-inserting Kolb. Before that he threw 11 TDs and 14 INTs in Philly before Reid gave up on him. -
QB still open competition

No matter what? He isn't exactly up against a hall of famer. He's competing against an undrafted free agent and a guy who already failed with two teams, has never thrown 10 TDs in a season, and can't stay on the field. It's basically Manuel's job by default. -
I don't know where this is from but it's perfect.

Great to see you back Astro, thank you for the report. -
The Colts broadcast really was awful though, so many times we couldn't see how the Bills lined up, and at times the announcers sounded like they don't watch the sport regularly. On Rolle's INT they thought the review was for possession rather than down by contact...seriously? I'm going to DVR an NFLN replay, hopefully they show our guys and I can hear what Murph had to say.

Enough QB talk, how about Goodwin!
2020 Our Year For Sure replied to Kellyto83TD's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I noticed him lined up at WR a few times but don't believe he was targeted. They seem to be keeping some of the offense under wraps for now- we saw no read option for example. I still think Goodwin will have a significant role on offense as a rookie. -
It's surreal to see pass rushers completely unblocked, with regularity. That's pure coaching.

I See No Reason To Temper Enthusiasm

This train's got to run today! Good avatar, good post. For me it's painful watching the Bills lose whether I'm expecting it or not, so I never saw the value in "keeping my expectations in check" in the preseason. Why not let your optimism run wild? If it works out great, if not it's gonna suck regardless. -

I'd like to see them rock the 90s uniform with the red helmet once or twice a year, like a throwback. -

Do you happen to recall what kind of play the bolded was? A slant? Shame about Gaskins, hopefully the fact he tried to go is an indication that it's not serious. He seems like a fit for what we need out of the third RB. Thank you, Astro! -
This was their only chance to get a look at Glenn as a guard prior to the 2014 Draft. You can't experiment like this during the season so they did it now. My theory is they're considering improving the O-line early in the draft and wanted to confirm that Glenn can be the dominant OG they suspected he'd be. They only needed to see him work there briefly so it's easy for them to explain it away with cross training, and promptly put him back at tackle where we need him to play this year. But now they have a better idea of their options as far as improving the line in the offseason.
-
Does Glenn have the footwork and quickness to lock down the league's quicker edge rushers? I'm asking only because I don't know. It seemed like he fared well last year.
-
I have to think Glenn is the best LT on this roster right now, even if he's struggling. It's possible they're using a bit of time in early August to think about how to best address the OL next offseason; testing the waters for a move to guard for Cordy next year.

Buffalo Bills Training Camp Report: 8/5/2013
2020 Our Year For Sure replied to Mike32282's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Awesome. He could become a mainstay of our three wide sets sooner than later. He seems to have the versatility to make plays down field and draw the safeties deep, and also make plays in the short game and use his running ability. I think we're going to like this pick. Thank you Mike, this stuff is invaluable for an out of towner. The new format works like a charm. -

Sounds like Pettine is doing his job -
http://www.democratandchronicle.com/article/20130730/SPORTS03/307300088/ In my opinion Goodwin will be at least our third most productive wideout this year and will have a role from day 1. Sick athletic ability and good hands to go with a good head on his shoulders, and the work ethic of an Olympian.

The 3-4 forces your DL to stack up an OL and hold the line of scrimmage rather than attacking. Dareus, Kyle, and Carrington are all at their best when they're shooting gaps and disrupting. I'm happy to see Pettine is living up to his word about building a system around the athletes here, rather than forcing a system that may not be an optimal fit. They will use both looks and IMO Carrington's ability to play both 4-3 DE and 3-4 DE is what allows them to disguise. Mario is listed as a DE there, and will be most of the time but look for him to line up as a LB so the offense doesn't know what they're looking at. The 3-4 will be used enough to create doubt, and to help defend the run when necessary. Otherwise it's one gap and let our athletes attack attack attack Look for players to sometimes line up in positions we don't expect, to create confusion. Things like Mario lining up at MLB and Kiko at OLB on a given play- I'm using an example of something Pettine did in Jersey but who knows what he'll cook up for our team. It's going to be fun watching a DC who makes an effort to confuse the opponent -

What is Brad Smith's role this year?

Every offseason we've had him we've foolishly had him working in the quarterback room. Given a chance to focus on WR there's no reason why he couldn't be effective. He has good hands, runs decent routes, good measurables, and is a good runner so should be effective in RAC in some of our west coast stuff. He is probably not one of our top 2 WRs after the draft we had but can still be a useful player, plus contribute on ST.
