  1. Based on the overall consensus of this board, the draft should focus on at least one of the following positions RB, WR, OG, DT, CB, MLB, TE, or FB. This means that at least one person will be unhappy with the road the Bills take. But I think in 2007, unlike in 2006, the direction of the team is apparent and just about any pick in the first round can be justified. I personally think the Bills had an AWESOME draft 2006. Granted, the rookies who played played out of neccesity and they weren't enough of an impact to garnish a winning record but honestly? They weren't a calamity waiting to happen, and in most cases they made positive impacts more often than negative ones.

Did Marv and co. get lucky with this group or are they just that good at finding talent? IMO the success of the 2006 rookies will take a TON of heat off the inevitable backlash which (mark my words) WILL occur on draft day. I don't see myself being dissapointed with anybody this current organization brings in. Does everyone else here think that they will be paitient enought to find good in whatever the front office deems fit for the future?

  2. im sure all marv is going to do is recognize he has plenty of other holes to fill and a kid going into his contract year.

i think that all marv has to do to handle the "situation" is tell willis "no extension, run for your money"

then when we find out NEXT YEAR if we want to keep him or not we can draft a RB then.

I just posted this on another thread, but it bares relevance here as well. I think drafting a RB 2007 is definitely a good idea. Yes, make Willis run for his money, and make him beat out a young spark plug to stay in Buffalo. And if he feels slighted for not getting an extension and he puts up HUGE numbers in 2007 with a young guy nipping at his heels, re-negotiate then to a reasonable degree knowing that across the NFL RB is one of the easiest positions to replace and that our replacment is waiting in the wings, and if Willis walks, draft another high character, high-motor guy in 2008 and before you know it, Buffalo has two backs producing between 700-1000 yards.

Bear in mind, this running back scenario trusts the scouting aptitude of Marv and company to find a guy that could be plugged in effectively during his rookie season. After last year's draft, I am confident in this...

  3. Hey, the Rams got a 3rd round pick from Miami for Lamar Gordon. THIS Lamar Gordon:

    http://www.nfl.com/players/playerpage/302034

I think the Willis trade is a stretch but an interesting scenario. But who needs him more than we do?

There are 21 players who gained more yards than him in 06 (one of them being Vick which means there are 20 teams which had a more productive back this past season). That means there are only 11 other teams besides Buffalo who didn't feature a 1000 yard back this year. Additionally, as it has been noted many times on this board, NFL teams seem to be making a move toward a more two-headed running attack. That said, there are still only five teams (TAM, OAK, CLE, DET, AZ) who had a poorer run offense than Buffalo.

I can see where all of those teams (with the exception of AZ) might be inclined to upgrade to a guy like Willis, but as most of them (like Buffalo) are in re-building phase, is it likely they'd be willing to float a draft pick to bring him in? I doubt it.

Finally, why get rid of him before next year? Like I just mentioned, it would behoove the Bills to establish TWO backs. This still entertains the possibility of drafting a back, but as it seems backward to mold a rookie at the expense of a veteran in his contract year, making a drafted RB Willis' replacment for 2007 simply doesn't make sense. A more realistic scenario IMO would be to draft a RB in 2007, let McGahee play out his contract next year with a young back providing an omnipresent flame under his asss, and then draft another RB in 2008.

  4. While the guy is clearly an ass (See LaDainian Tomlinson comment) this one seems a bit questionable to me. Long story short? They refused to go home with him and tag team, he got mad, they see a way to make some cash.

The LT comment is one thing, but to drop the other (and arguably more offensive) "f" word at a banquet of all places is a real classless act. I had no idea Jr. Seau was so outrageously offensive...sort of funny!

...also, as far as I know thesmokingugn.com has a lot of credibility (links to the court documents and all)

  5. While there has been a lack of production at the 2nd WR position, I think it is unfair to put the blame on Price completely. In the 1st half of the season the line could not block for anyone to get open. In the second half of the season, the line could block but we were not throwing to Price necessarily all the time as the 2nd option....Remember we played Green Bay, Indy, and San Diego to not lose the ball game and very conservatively in the 2nd half of the season. There was no scope for a 2nd WR to catch balls in those games. In the rest of the games Price did play decently, however we were going more often to our TEs than the 2nd WR. It looked like TE and RBs were the 2nd options in JPs progression on the plays.

I would like to make this line more solid and give Price a chance. What we truly require is a tall and physical WR who can take on some of the double coverages from Evans. Price has not been able to do that this season.

Josh Reed and Roscoe Parrish are ideally suited for the slot receiver position.

Price was an aging homecoming bandaid that played well enough that the Bills offense wasn't a complete castrophe. They'll look for someone new and if not this year then DEFINITELY next.

  6. Sorry But I feel as if the NFL belongs in the USA only. Thats just how I feel. If It was a preseason game, then I wouldnt care, but to have a regular season game over there is nonsense. I can see a preseason game, but regular season noway! The home team would lose out on alot of funds, not to mention they would only have 7 true home games, while the rest of the NFL has a full 8. NOT FAIR at all.

    I think its bad move!

but like I said if it were preseason, I wouldnt have a problem with that.

Besides, Europe already has football, its called soccer.

I agree completely. I think a game in Europe, no matter the "home team" is a hassle and a marketing nightmare. Is it going to be a primetime game there so Americans can watch it at regular time or will I have to get up at 5 to watch my team on Sunday?

Last year SF and AZ played in Mexico but I think that's an ENTIRELY different scenario. First off, the teams and the venue hail from the same hemisphere, and the two teams chosen to play there probably bolster fan support from Mexicans or recently emmigrated Mexicans.

A game in Europe = great fun for Europe but a smack in the face to the team/fans of the "home" team that waste one week's precious advantage.

Hardest schedule in the league this year and now this chance for this next year!?

  7. That will indicate that our OL will be poor another season....I think the Bills will address the OL this off season.

Evidently Marv announced during the Marv Levy show that next year's priority is the run DEFENSE. Which is also nice I guess

  8. Nicely done, Pyrite . A minor detail you should fix, though: we drafted 9 players, not 8...you forgot to number Simpson in your write-up.

All I'll add to your thread is that I would classify our draft into 3 tiers:

1st tier, the definite starters going into next year: Whitner, Simpson, Pennington

2nd tier, potential starters for next year, partly depending on which direction this team goes in the offseason: McCargo, Ellison, Youboty

3rd tier, very likely to just be backups next year: Williams, Merz, Butler

With this classification, I'd say at this point Marv did very well with his draft. All 9 made the team, and 7 of the 9 started at some point this season. Plus next year, it's very possible that 6 of the 9 could be starters!

I think Williams deserved to be bumped into "2nd tier" and I also believe that we might see more offensive than defensive picks in the draft which will include large interior OLmen in early rounds, a shifty RB in later rounds, and when those needs have been filled, a LB or two in the final rounds. This, ofcourse, assumes we can retain Nate. If Marv and company can manage that, it's time to build an offense which can keep the defense on the sidelines thus maximizing the relentless speed attack.

  9. Right guard is the major concern, Gandy is a solid affordable starter at LG.

agreed, plus picking up a RG will give us functional debth at center after moving Preston to his more natural position. Still looking to see what kind of players Butler and Merz become, but I imagine they, like Pennington will greatly improve during their second year leap; but as Butler and Merz have little experience, they too will become ample reserves. Basically, finding a stud RG is a huge step toward fostering a B+ unit which is certainly an imrovment from this year's C.

  10. Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds

    Truly ground breaking.

    Two things:

1.) According to the song's writer (John Lennon), the name of the song is in now way an intentional reference to the drug. In fact, (according the the song's writer John Lennon) Julian Lennon (the son of the song's writer) drew a picture at school of a classmate flying through the night time sky. When he showed it to his father (the song's author) and was asked what it was he replied, "It's Lucy in the sky with diamonds."

2.) The song was written almost entirely by John Lennon.

Man I love being a smug, over-educated fan of The Beatles.

Young Girl Facing Charges After Wetting Pants

    Thursday, January 4, 2007

DANVILLE, Pa. A 12-year-old special education student in Montour County was charged with disorderly conduct after authorities said she deliberately wet her pants at school.

Her mother told the Press Enterprise it happened because her daughter was frightened by the principal.

The girl had been preparing a holiday lunch with her classmates and teachers at Danville Middle School on December 20th.

Her mother said when her daughter refused to go to the kitchen to wash some pots and pans, teachers summoned principal Kevin Duckwork, who confronted the girl.

    She then wet her pants.

Her mother said the girl is terrified of Duckwork and has wet herself during previous confrontations with him. But Danville Police Chief Eric Gill said school officials are at their “wit’s end” with the girl, and they believe her actions were deliberate.

Danville is a fine town, not far from where I went to college.

  12. Paul Mcartney On Drugs

    I’m Looking Through You

    1965, Rubber Soul

Ripped on weed, McCartney sees deeply into his then girlfriend, model Jane Asher, and decides she’s a phony. This story has been told by McCartney himself.

    Yellow Submarine

    1966, Revolver

On the surface, a child’s rhyme; but the song was taken as a winking assertion of hippie, psychedelic, drop out escape from the dreary mainstream culture into the upcoming party utopia. It was even adapted by some new left activists as a theme song for those seeking an alternative culture.

With A Little Help From My Friends

1967, Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band

He gets high with a little help from his friends. What does he see when he turns out the lights?

    Fixing A Hole

    1967, Sgt. Peppers

Taken by some to be a heroin song (fixing being a term used for shooting up], but also works as a contemplative pothead song or, for that matter, a plain old contemplative person’s song. Another song lyric with a drop out vibe.

    Lovely Rita

    1967, Sgt. Peppers

“When are you free to take some tea with me?” George Harrison has commented that The Beatles frequently used tea as a pseudonym for pot. On the other hand, they were Limeys, so maybe tea is just tea.

What about Got to Get You into My Life??

The "you" throughout the song is meant to be pot as Paul claimed it is better than booze because when on it one can function and there is never a hangover.

Also "I'd love to turn you on" from Day in the Life is a notoriously blatant shout out- along with "went upstairs and had a smoke and somebody spoke and I went into a dream"

I'm sure you knew all this, but if not ENJOY!

  13. Is anyone here not planning to watch the playoffs since the Bills ain't in it?

I'm indifferent. I won't turn down a party invitation but I'm not setting aside an 8 hour block to watch teams which only spark my interest because of free agency especially when there are plenty of talent scouts right here to tell me who to hope for!

  14. I know it sounds silly but I do not think they are happy with Willis....his production this year was not that great and he wants to be paid like a top shelf RB (which he is not)...so he holds out and we draft a RB to cover the loss next year.

I'm inclined to say the same thing. This thread will either go nowhere or will be shot down by folks making excuses for Willis (i.e. defenses he faced, injuries, OL, etc.). All of these points are valid, but in the unquantifiable esoteric sense, I agree that it is likely this coaching administration isn't thrilled with his game-day contributions. His heart and stamina cannot be questioned but his numbers can, so we'll have to wait and see.

I believe draft forecasts to be futile after how surpised most fans were last year with the selections made. But, the fact of the matter remains: after one year the 2006 draft was NOT a bust and Marv and co. have a plan and know what they're doing. Whether or not the fan base is on the same page is yet to be determined.

  15. I know we need a stud d tackle and I wish we could get one but I don't know is Marv is going to get one since we already got McCargo and Williams last year and just signed Tripplet. With that being said, I definitly think we need to get this guy to fill in for Fletcher cuz he is good as gone. Watch these two videos, these plays are sick and show you why we need to get him. He's fast, powerful, can tackle very well and we need his speed for the cover 2 at middle.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sVaa8NWqync

(this shows his speed to get the heisman runner up at the corner - listen to the announcers!)

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1YodiWVGS_8

    (it speaks for itself)

 Patrick Willis in a Bills Uniform :)

Wow that guy made two really good plays in college! Just kidding, I am trying to not exhaust myself over draft business for the next four months. Like everyone on this board I want to know what the 2007 Bills roster will look like and I am faithful that whatever decisions made by our two Ivy League grads will be GREAT SUCCESSES! But keep the predictions coming.

  16. Ah yes, the mock drafts, just one tiny step ahead of power rankings in the credibility department

As far as I'm concerned, this Bozo has NO credibility. It amazes me that someone pays these a-holes to spew drivel without any legitmate research. I mean, this guy clearly knows nothing about the Buffalo Bills. What a dickhead.

  17. I think the problem right now is the entire right side. Fowler might not be a Pro Bowler, but he is good enough, the Bills just need more experience on that right side. Some competition at RT and RG won't hurt next season, too bad Reyes didn't have a falling out with the coaching staff, that could have been one less spot to worry about

I like Fowler and I have issues with bagging him and other OL misfits for chemistry's sake. Barring injuries I think we can expect to see basically the same line next year with an improvment at RG and that's it.

    Peters- he's in

Gandy- referred to by JP as the leader of the bunch rendering him non-expendable

Fowler- very smart and wiley (and has established a chess playing raport with JP)

Pennington- will experience his big rookie to second year leap and with his size I think that could be very promising.

So major upgrades to the line, in my opinion, are neither evident or neccesary. Expect to see a couple of mid-rate inside guys but aside from that, I for one, hope to see some familiar faces come September.

  18. Our oline is bad outside of jason peters. Honestly it's not enough games yet to judge pennington at rt, but the inside is horribly weak. While watching the ravens game I have never seen guards get continually blown off the ball and knocked on their ass 5 yards backwards like Mike Gandy and Duke Preston managed to do.

There's also a reason we rarely ever try running up the middle or qb sneaks on 3rd and short. Melvin Fowler and above mentioned guards do not get any kind of push. For all the progress Losman has made and yes he has made progress, we were still 29th in offensive yardage, 23rd in points scored, 25th in passing and 27th in rushing. More of this can be attributed to inadequate line play then skill position players.

I'm still not sure it's fair to judge them based on their performance against Baltimore- a team which has continually embarassed opposing offenses, especially in the trenches.

But I think any one who argues that an insufficient to servicable line will best a dominant one is delirious. Improvments are necessary to become a championship team.
