Stevie Johnson doesn't workout in the offseason
The Big Cat replied to ET1062's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Nobody's arguing that over-training can't hurt you. I just can't determine why--to justify Stevie's disposal of their recommendations--you're so certain the Bills' staff ascribes to these mistakes. -

Ha, okay. What you call "choosing to ignore" I call you giving him the benefit of the doubt after he back-pedaled into said-context. I might do the same if he hadn't already had multiple public displays of dumbassticity. -

Not really, he eventually back-pedaled his way into that conclusion, but that was not how it came up. -

Look, I get that he's naturally gifted, that he does awesome things on the field which are--at times--mind boggling, but he also has a knack for pissing off his coach by being selfish and immature (Week 17, 2011). And to me, that's the biggest issue here-- he needs to grow the !@#$ up. -

Look, may be we just need to back up. I'm not saying Stevie's remarks are a direct variable in the team's losing history (though I do believe that argument can be made, I'm just not making it right now). What i am arguing is that it was a selfish, irresponsible, immature and--quite frankly--a ludicrous thing for a professional athlete to say. And unfortunately, Stevie has a history of displaying all those behaviors, regardless of finishing in the top 20 in receiving yards. And if I was one of his teammates or--worse for him--his coach, I'd be PISSED. As a fan, it's more of the same from Stevie. And just because he's amassed 1,000 receiving yards in each of the last three seasons, doesn't negate the fact that he's in serious need of an attitude adjustment. And that's all well and good. So Stevie's approach should have been to consult with his professional colleagues (the training staff), not take their program and toss in a drawer so he could hoop it up, run around the block with his wife and do the things that he likes to do. -

If you're truly saying these thing in a vacuum, then I agree. If you're implying that Stevie, Marcel, Ryan and Rian are all handed the same training guide, you're out of your mind. -

Producing? 'Producing' when you play on a team that's 29-51 over your tenure means being able to say, without any doubt, that you did everything possible to help your team win. Stevie simply cannot say that. 'Producing' when you plan on a team that's 29-51 over your tenure means doing more than limping into the top-10 in ONE meaningful statistics ONCE in your career (he and seven other guys were tied for seventh in TD's in 2010 with 10) This is nonsense. If what you're saying is true, then Stevie SHOULD HAVE DONE THE TRAINING REGIMEN THAT WAS DESIGNED FOR HIM! -

I can tell you that's unequivocally false. As a guy who played a DI sport, who's married to a woman who played a DI sport, who now works with professional athletes in that sport, I can tell you from first-hand experience: trainers know what they're talking about. They're constantly evolving to the latest techniques and theories, and they design their systems to maximize the body's potential for a specific sport. NFL teams wouldn't hire a training staff that's part of bygone culture. That makes no sense, whatsoever. -

To answer your question, Franz, yes--he's Tweeted extensively about this so-called non-issue. Evidently fans aren't the only ones making a big to-do about it... You don't even have to be a Twitter-hater to see Stevie's response to this as compulsive, immature and unprofessional. The kid has a pattern of this kind of childish behavior, and that cannot be denied. -

It was?? Ever since his post-game performance following the Pitt. OT loss, I've been saying he needs to grow up and focus. And because of that I should have been saying 'let him walk' while his contract was being renewed? I hardly think that it's that cut and dry. I think Hondo made a great point, and I ask Bills fans to consider how these comments would/should sit with Doug Marrone, because that's how I'm viewing it. No coach should tolerate that kind of flippant disregard for team policies/systems. Likewise, no teammate should tolerate it either. I understand that in some warped way, we--as fans--are privileged to have a guy like Stevie on our team, and I'm not discounting his accomplishments for a second. But if you can't understand why his comments could be viewed as a big !@#$ you to the organization, to his teammate, to his coaches and to the training staff (who, I'm certain are well-versed on theories about over-worked muscles, Joe), and if you don't see this as yet another display of immature, entitled, cocky, selfish behavior, then quite frankly you have blinders on. -

Oh, it was booklet, not a binder? Then forget everything I said. Ah, I hadn't realized this was Stevie affirming us all that he now sees the error of his ways. Then all praise be to Jim !@#$ing Rome for helping Stevie come to this realization almost a month after his fifth season ended. -

Your point? I'm going off of what he DID SAY: They give us strength and conditioning binders and I just throw mine in the drawer. I've had 1,000 yards each of the last three seasons, imagine how much better I'd be if I actually worked out. -

I was training the whole time. One need not be in the know nor blessed with super human powers of inference when immaturity is the only recurring behavior Stevie has ever displayed. But your point is salient. The NFL and its players are exactly the same as they were 25 years ago before you were born. -

You know what's less effective than lifting 20 lb weights in range of motion exercises? NOT LIFTING AT ALL. I can't believe folks are bending over backward to justify his remarks. Stevie needs to grow up. Period. I now believe Chan's decision to bench Stevie for the latter part of week 17 in 2011 was due not only to Stevie's blatant disregard for a DIRECT order to knock it off with the touchdown celebrations, but more so that it was likely a tipping point after an ongoing series of passive aggressive, insubordinate bull **** like this. Also: "arm chair strength and conditioning coaches?" How bout the ACTUAL strength and conditioning coaches--whose specialty AND JOB it is to prepare and recuperate the players' bodies? You know, the ones who have handed Stevie the drawer-bound training guide designed to accomplish both those things and more. How could anyone not draw the correlation between his off season negligence and his recurring, nagging injuries to his support/stabilizing muscles (hammys and groin)?? -
You guys will undoubtedly carry on without me, and no amount of anything will change a lot of minds here. I hope that's for the best, because as much as I like to disagree with guys here, there are some very intelligent posters who contribute here. USA! USA! USA! http://forums.twobil...e/#entry2610254
