Under the circumstances...how do you think Orton is doing? Other than the pick 6....he might be all right. Don't know if he's got enough 1st team reps to pull this off, but he does not look as lost as EJ. Did a couple of things managing the clock there at the end of the half that I thought were pretty heads up. -
Does anyone still support EJ or Hackett?
Rockinon replied to NextYearGuys's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
This is a pretty intuitive way of looking at it. However, I'd like add some more to this. Last year, Hackett was pushing hard to go faster with a hurry up offense. The practices are fast paced. The problem with this is a QB needs time to absorb what they are learning. I think a better approach is to run your offense slow but emphasize quick reads. Once a QB is able to make decisions quickly, you can then turn up the speed dial. We are dealing with not only a young inexperienced QB but also a young inexperienced coach. You can't be expected to come out making quick reads and managing a hurry up without the experience. I think the coaches have put a lot of pressure on the young man. Add in also some offensive linemen that have had to learn on the fly while going up against some great defenses and the pressure on the QB goes up even further. EJ will be fine. It sucks for him that has to benched, but he may learn about taking control of the huddle, making his reads quicker and getting the ball where it needs to be by watching a 10 year veteran at work. He does have the talent. All he needs is time to grow into his job.... something he has not been given. Unfortunately for him, he ran out of time. The team is bigger than EJ and the coach knows this team as a whole is ready to win now. There just isn't enough time to get EJ ready and win games now. Winning is the bottom line in this league. -
Week 5: Lions' Game Preparation

Just read this in the Chris Brown piece "No weak links allowed on defense". Can you imagine how good the defense would be rated if they actually had an offense that was staying on the field long enough to put up 7pts regularly? All of the news about the Lions defense has me thinking that the Bills defense is somewhat overlooked. You can bet this unit is going to be bringing some heat tomorrow. Was just noticing also that the Bills are not the only team with offensive line problems. The Lions are allowing a lot of sacks and they are banged up at some key positions too. This game is winnable. Won't be easy going on the road to get it, but the D isn't going down without a fight. Now all we need is some offense. This could be a game that comes down to field position and special teams. -
1st Bills offensive play from scrimmage tomorrow?

Orton drops back and is immediately dropped for a 6yd sack. -

I actually think our big offensive line will be OK this week. Detroit has a powerful OL but they don't move people around like Houston. There aren't a lot of stunts. They just line up and beat their man....collapse the pocket. This is exactly the type of defensive line our OL was made to compete against. Remember, our offensive line is big and strong too...they just have been getting their asses handed to them with linemen moving around and disguising the pressure. Detroit's defense is good though. Even though they do not do a lot of stunts, they can beat people with sheer physicality. This might be a better match up than we thought. If Kyle can get the ball out fast to our play makers, this game could be real fun to watch. -
Miami has the easy road this qtr. The Jets are doomed. NE? I have no idea how they will do. And I think Buf wins 3. If we beat Det. at home, we're going on a 4 game win streak.

Great post! You might be on to something.

Week 5: Lions' Game Preparation

We ride that horse to death. -
Why all the hand wringing over these replies? It seems Sammy and Kyle are merely being frank when asked a question. In Sammy's case, he is simply stating an observation and does not sound like he is taking a jab at EJ.....sounds more like he is complimenting Kyle. If we are so worried about EJ's sensibilities, I think that is a bigger mistake. The only way to correct something that you are not doing well is to accept it, try to do better and move on. That's what grown ups do. He is not a grade schooler. EJ will be fine. As for Kyle....all I can say is wow! He is absolutely right. Crap question.....loaded question. And I love the reply!

You know, I have been wondering about that too. EJ is a young QB facing some pretty good defensive fronts. Wonder if he is being asked to do too much.

The Bills are currently 1 - 0 in our division and in 1st place. The road to winning our division and going to the playoffs is definitely within reach. Winning against our division opponents doesn't look as tough as it did at the start of this season. NE just got whipped pretty bad by KC and are looking very beatable. The Jets are 1 - 3. Miami looks good at times but we just seem to have their number. If Orton can come in and not lose games for us like Manuel just did, I'm all for it. I sure hope Kyle Williams and Bradham are good to go next week. This thing is far from over. Orton may not light the world on fire, but on this team, he doesn't have to. We don't need a QB to air it out deep either. Our skill players just need to be hit on target when they create some separation. EJ's problem IMHO is not accuracy. I think his problem is timing. From what I have seen, he is not delivering on time....sometimes throws before a play can unfold, sometimes he waits too long and tries to fire it in there too late. He is still good, but performing well against JJ Watt and even the stunts that SD gave us are things that NFL defenses are doing to disrupt a young QB. He needs more time to figure this stuff out. Here's the problem. The coach doesn't know how long it's going to take for him to catch on. This team needs to win now and I am pretty sure Marone is doing what he thinks is best for the team. He's removing the biggest thing that is holding it back and trying something else. That may not be what is best for EJ, but it at least has a chance to be what is best for the team. Tough decision, but this is a tough sport. That's just the way it is. I know a lot of people think the coaching is at fault. Me personally, I have to give Marone some credit for pulling the trigger now while we still have a chance to make it to the playoffs and beyond. It takes guts and I admire that. What is with all these people throwing themselves off of cliffs? And the media? What bunch of blow hards.

Buffalo's pass defense appears to be among the worst in the NFL while the run defense is among the best. After going up against some very good QBs so far this season, I expect them to right the ship this week. Fitz will be pressured all day and the Bills pass defense jumps up a few spots. Houston is in double digit trouble for this game. -
And if EJ continues to improve throughout the season......what is the QB priority then? Period?
