Great post! Somewhere out there is video of Bill Belichick and Wes Welker on the sidelines during a pre - season game' Welker was injured. Edelman was starting and playing very well Belichick asked Welker if he ever heard of Wally Pipp, the Yankee first baseman replaced by Lou Gehrig. Welker kind of acted like it was no big deal - short story Welker gone shortly thereafter and Edelman is now the guy. Good scouting, good coaching decisions, and a demand for excellence and commitment by players.
At that game; painful!
Was at that game too; 10 years old and Jack Kemp was my hero! Rumors surfaced the Bills were over confident and partied hard on New Year's eve.
In terms of the young American Football League, Costa was the prototype tight end; big, physical, fast, great blocker, good hands and could run after he caught the ball.
Known in the day as "The Catch!"
As Plank holder I meant they were one of the first to purchase season tickets; on the side of the end zone across from the Dodge Street tunnel. There was always a twenty piece band that played during timeouts right below.
Paul Costa, Tight End during the 1960's glory years passed away recently. I often post about the "old days of the "AFL" and growing a Bills fan; I had family members that were plank holders regarding season tickets from 1960 well into the 1990's. As stated in previous posts, the players during the 1960's were blue collar guys that played football professionally during the fall. The Bills of the 1960's were a close knit group hanging out in Taverns and bars across western New York. Paul Costa had huge arms and arm strength and would arm wrestle bar patrons for a beer, all in good fun, really great guy.
Paul Costa lost his young son to illness in the early 1970's soon leaving the Bills, although he had a short stint in the WFL.
Us "old farts" lose another of our guys from the 1960's; my prayers and thoughts to the family.
This team is undisciplined, sloppy tackling and blocking, along with poor play calling.
What is the Patriots Won - Loss record since 2000? And how many SB rings are they wearing?
Good post!
Really, how many years have they gone 8 - 8 and barely beat below average teams, they won ugly so what. Cincinnati is going to be ugly and another reality check.
I drank the Kool - Aid this year, however, I still see the same old Bills. The Defense played great, but they still seem sloppy when tackling. Undisciplined, sloppy, poor O - Line play, and poor playing; I see the playoff drought continuing.
Agree!
Back in the 1060's, most players all had class and character, most were blue collar guys who played football for a living in the fall. Marty Schottenheimer played the card game Uecker at one of the local Taverns in Tonawanda, my father often played against him in tournaments. The players were very outgoing and respected the Buffalo area taking pride playing for the Bills.
