I think this is a more compelling argument against Davis than "he only had four great seasons". Four great seasons is a lot for a RB...

It was a different era. Go look at the QB stats in the 70's...they were pathetic compared to now. Joe Ferguson was considered a top-10 QB...his rookie year he started every game and threw for less than 1000 yards. He had a 52% completion rate for his career...Namath won a Super Bowl--the first ever by an AFL team--and, as many have pointed out, he was a pivotal figure in the transformation of the NFL into what it is today.

Terrell Davis had four one-thousand yard rushing seasons, including three seasons where he exceeded 2000 yards combined rushing-receiving and won two Super Bowls. How many great seasons do you expect a Hall of Fame running back to have? OJ Simpson really only had four great seasons, yet he was a first-ballot Hall of Famer and maybe the greatest running back of all time...I don't really understand why people take issue with Davis being in the Hall.

I know he hasn't been inducted yet, but I'm still gonna say Frank Gore. The guy had one great season. Really good football player for a lot of years, but doesn't belong in the Hall of Fame.

Priest Holmes. I didn't dig deep into the stats, but for at least three seasons, in which he had more than 2000 yards combined rushing and receiving, he was clearly the best running back in football. To me, that makes him a Hall of Famer.

Nahh, I think it's a pretty strong indicator that you're at least drafting starting-quality players with your first round draft picks and not wasting them on silly things like Guards, RBs and off-ball Linebackers. Maybe a better indicator is players who get contract extensions... Exactly, especially for Guards and off-ball linebackers, who, for fifth-year option salary purposes, are lumped with offensive tackles and edge-rushing linebackers, respectively. You could argue that that's really a system flaw, but still...

Beane has only made three first round picks who have been eligible to have their fifth-year option picked up. Of those, only Josh Allen has been extended. Not exactly a great track record. Nice try, though.

They're not too hard to identify: There's about one per draft class. They physically dominate opposing offensive linemen and demonstrate the ability to consistently blow up the pocket and sack the quarterback against Power 5 competition. Jalen Carter was the only one available this year and there is seldom more than one in any draft. Other examples include Derek Brown and Quinnen Williams. There are maybe 7 or 8 in the whole league.

No answer for the second round pick? What are you talking about? They get Wilson and Gonzalez (premium players at premium positions) and then they have two second round picks to use as they please. As it is, they massively reached for a RB and an off-ball linebacker, then drafted a TE with pick 34 to replace the guy they traded for pick 55. Absolutely awful. The only thing they did right was getting Herndon Hooker in the 3rd.

You just answered your own question. The Gibbs pick in particular was egregious. Absolutely inexcusable that they didn’t use that first pick on Wilson or Carter. And there is no way they should have failed to land a CB, like Gonzalez or Turner.
