It’s a legitimate question, but it’s the type of thing that would never even occur to McDummy. It certainly would have been better than what he chose to do. Why? How did that work out?

I no longer live in WNY, so I don’t have my finger on the pulse of the organization like others do who are exposed to the local media on a daily basis, but from my vantage point it seems like Pegula-land is in disarray. Terry rarely speaks to the media and when he does, it’s usually pretty bad. Kim’s mysterious illness has been handled in an utterly bizzare fashion, etc. And it’s not at all clear what the command structure is within the organization…does Beane report to McDermott? Which one has Terry’s ear? If my perception of the organization is correct, I think it’s unlikely McDermott gets canned, even though he richly deserves it. I just think it would be too heavy of a lift for this operation. Much more likely that they just ride it out and see what happens next year.

I can only name two worse coaches in the league right now than McDermott (Rivera and Staley) and both are on their way out. He absolutely needs to be gone and the chance of replacing him with someone worse is minimal; you’d have to intentionally try to hire an incompetent.

There is close to zero risk. McDermott is the definition of a replacement-level coach.

Yes, I think it's somewhat unusual for the coach to report directly to the Owner instead of to the GM (assuming that's true), but that doesn't mean that Beane wouldn't have significant influence on decisions about McDermott's future. Many organizations also have someone who sits above the GM but below the owner (such as a President of Football Operations). I don't know if Terry has someone like that within his organization, but it would be interesting to know.

Obviously Terry has the last word, but are there others within his organization who would be involved in the decision, other than Beane? It’s an important question and you didn’t answer it.

Don't be obtuse. We have a head coach who needs firing and it's important to know who might be making the call on such an important decision. Obviously, Beane would be involved, but who else? Terry himself, or does he have underlings to whom he's delegated responsibility for decisions like this?

Because it would have happened by now if it was going to happen; we've never come particularly close; things are now getting worse, not better; and this team under McDermott is losing the same way, over and over and over. That's enough for any rational person. Time to try something else.

No one is saying that changing coaches is a panacea or that it's without risk; we are saying that it is now all but certain that the McDermott era is not going to produce a championship, so it's time to try something else. Four years of Josh Allen's prime is enough to waste on the McDermott experiment. It has nothing to do with the Denver Broncos and their inability to find a QB after Peyton Manning's retirement.

Pipe dream of course, but no reason we can’t land a terrific WR in round 1, even without trading up. Rome O or Troy Franklin would be awesome. One thing we’ve leaned from these loaded WR drafts is that there is no way to know which guy will turn out to be the best. I don’t really think the Dolphins are better than we are, but they always beat the teams they should, and we don’t. What makes us so high variance and the Dolphins low variance? Or maybe they are just better….

Agree 100%. Just another reason we need to draft a guy in the first round who can step in immediately as WR2 and take over as WR1 the next year. Digg's is 30 years old...there's gonna be a dropoff.

I'd love to know opposing teams' FG percentage against the Bills since 2000. I bet it's 8-10 percentage points higher than the league average over that time.

Don't forget Shane Steichen in Indy. He's doing an unbelievable job with a backup QB, a young roster, and no real receiving threats.

It's a joke of a tactic that never works in the NFL, but it's all McDermott's got. For him, it passes as high level strategery, along with bringing out the offense to run the "hard count" on 4th and 2 from the 50, taking a delay of game, then punting the ball into the end-zone. Loser.

Great point. Problem is, there are very few data points because the overwhelming majority of coaches with an elite franchise QB are not incompetent enough to get fired.

We all knew that and McDermott should have, too. There was no way that defense was going to get a stop at that point of the game. Our OT possession should have been treated as four-down territory the whole way, TD or bust. Total lack of self-awareness.

Only positive I can come up with is, if we make the playoffs, it will feel like playing with house money, for a change. Maybe that will make difference.

He certainly seems to. It’s kinda strange that Anarumo hasn’t been hired by someone yet, especially with all the zeros coaching NFL teams nowadays. Makes you wonder if there’s some issue…

I’m reluctant to hire another defensive head coach, but I’d consider this. He’s smart and he’s a winner. No more losers, please.
