Wait, I read here that Gruden just up and resigned…so he was actually forced to resign?

It's anything but easy. I'm not sure what sort of contract (if any) governs the conduct of team owners, but I'm pretty sure a lawsuit to force Snyder to sell would be extremely risky. Danny Boy doesn't seem like the kind of guy who will go quietly and he's likely to be around for decades to come.

The NFL has fared poorly in its lawsuits against club owners. They are going to tread very, very carefully in dealing with Snyder and the WFT organization.

As I said above, it's highly unlikely that Gruden just walked into Davis's office and said "I quit." There was undoubtedly a negotiation. I have not seen Gruden's contract, but it's unlikely that emails Gruden sent 10 years ago as a private citizen would have given Davis a clear-cut basis to terminate him for cause. Hence, Gruden probably had significant leverage in the negotiations and probably walked away with a nice "severance package."
