    While I do agree with you about moving up once we get into the 20's, I wouldn't say "any" of them though.  I think the players Beane would go up are a lot less some of the players being mentioned.  For example Legette and Worthy.  I just don't see either being the kind of WR that Beane would move up for in this draft.

    I think there are 5 WR's that Beane would make a move up to get in this draft, and the kind of move up is probably within the 20's still so it is not too costly.  Harrison, Nabers, Odunze, Thomas, and Mitchell.  I highly doubt any of the big 3 get close enough to where Beane would pull the trigger and move up.  Unless something kind of crazy happens and Worthy somehow leap frogs one of the big 3 after his crazy 40 time and it surprisingly pushes one of them down to striking distance for Beane who would probably pay a little more to go up and get one of them.

    So I think that leaves really Thomas and Mitchell as the kind of WR I think Beane would pull the trigger to go get in a small trade up.  I don't think he would do it for Worthy, just do not think he is a good fit here or what Beane is looking for as his frame is just too small despite being 6'1".  Maybe he would for McConkey, depends who you ask though as where people grade him seems to vary some from person to person.  I am one that is very high on McConkey, before the combine I had him as the 5th WR on my board.  Now I have him and Mitchell kind of tied for 5th.  I think he has the highest floor while still possessing one of the highest ceilings, and his game and style would help Josh a lot IMHO.

    There is a chance that all 5 of the big 3 with Thomas and Mitchell are gone before we pick, which then makes me think Beane stays put at 28 and either takes next WR or another position if someone they love gets pushed down thanks to the QB and WR runs, or maybe even makes a small trade back to pickup an extra 3rd or something in this draft.

    BUT:  I do expect Beane to be aggressive on getting a guy he covets, so my way too early prediction is we make a small trade up to get either Thomas or Mitchell...or in an extremely surprising case of Worthy going before all the big 3 are gone, going up and getting one of the big 3 if they get near that 20th pick range.

    Yeah, I meant basically either Thomas or Mitchell as the 2nd tier guys. I agree that Legette and Worthy are tougher to envision being in that group, and that Beane would probably only take them if they drop down to him at 28—unless there's someone else he covets who dropped down to him.

  2. One of the issues to bear in mind is that most teams know we're looking hard at WR in the 1st round, so if any of those 2nd-tier guys slip into the 20s, other interested teams will be looking to leapfrog us. Thinking any of them would drop to us at 28 is probably a very risky move.

    That's why I agree with @Alphadawg7 that if any of them make it to the 20s, we'll probably make a small move up to get one of them.

    I'm not ready for this.  I get that almost our entire defensive line are free agents, but I still have PTSD from all the drafting of defensive lineman.

    Perhaps, but I also have PTSD from watching opposing teams run all over us and our DL going missing at key moments.

    If I’m thinking about it right, if you put too much of your players’ salaries into Void years, you effectively could put your team into cap hell in the future.  Having to account for the cap hit on players that may not even be on your team anymore.

    Not to be picky, but to clarify: salary money, as far as I understand it, is only charged to the cap during the year that the salary is earned (ie, when the player plays). Salary is basically for playing time; bonuses are extra and don’t have to be counted in the year the player plays—they are spread out over the life of the contract.

    So you don’t put salary money into void years, because the player is not playing during the void years. Void years are only for bonus money, and for the purpose of spreading out the bonus money over more years, lessening each year’s cap hit but extending the cap hit over more years.

    This is one reason you often hear salary money being converted into bonus money—it lowers the salary cap hit for that year, so that more of the player’s earnings is bonus money, which can then be spread out over more years. Adding void years allows you to then spread it out over even more years.

  5. Unpopular?

    Bills really screwed the pooch by trading the Mahomes pick. Not because I don't like Josh...I absolutely *love* Josh and I don't want anyone else at QB for us. But passing on Mahomes and gifting him to the Chiefs not only means they passed on the best QB of this generation, but also gifted him to an AFC rival that will keep us out of the Super Bowl for the entirety of his career.

    Nevertheless, I still love having Josh as our QB, despite the implications.

    I keep seeing "pay cut" or restructure for Tre White.

    Do you have any idea the kind of pay cut he would have to take for keeping him to be even a remote possibility? It would be an insulting amount.

    We're talking about a guy that if he were on the market now would have to take an incentive laden prove it deal. He never returned to consistent form from his ACL and then tore an Achilles.

    His role would be a guy coming off the bench and mixing in, hoping he can get back up to speed. He's on a 16.44m cap hit this season and a 16.67m cap hit next season for that role. And unlike some other players that we can't get out from under right now, Tre White's out in that massive contract is THIS offseason.

    When we gave up a 3rd for Douglas, it was pretty clear to me then that he wasn't only the Tre White replacement for just last year. In Douglas, Benford, Johnson, and Elam - we have our 3 starters and a 1st Round Pick coming off the bench in relief.

    Douglas and Johnson will be extended and Benford has been getting better and better. He's the present and the future of the CB position and you don't want to mess with that development.

    I just don't see a restructure or pay cut that makes sense for both sides. Save for White being okay with going from one of the top paid CB's in Football to being paid reserve money. We're not going to extend Douglas to put him on the bench and we're not going to stunt Benford's development by sticking him on the bench either. And we don't want that much money tied up into the CB position, especially for the role he'd have and being at best, a MASSIVE question mark.

    In the position we're in, we have to come up with cap space anywhere we can. There's only a handful of players who have outs in their deals this offseason. Tre is the easiest decision amongst them, if you remove emotion from the equation.

    We're set at CB without him. His replacement is already in house. The only reason to not move on is it would be sad to and fans are in their feels about it. And that's simply not a valid reason when it comes to Business.

    I think you’re right about Tre. It’s tough, because we all love him and how he has been a great rep for the team. But if you take emotion out of it, keeping him around doesn’t make a lot of sense for the future of the team.

    Coming back from an Achilles injury is not easy. It takes a lot of time, and his chances of getting back to his old level of play are not good. Especially when you consider his position is one that requires top speed and cutting ability, neither of which he’ll likely have back anytime soon. Certainly not likely next season.

    If the Bills weren’t in such terrible cap shape, then maybe I can see them working something out. Given the way things are, I just don’t see it.

    And that sucks.

    Personally I still think a lot of Bills fans hatred against the Patriots dynasty is misled because of the fact they were in the same division.

    But like I've said before, it's not like Brady and Patriots were standing in the way of a team that had a franchise QB and loaded roster. The Bills were trash pretty much all those years with the exception of a few where they were close to the wildcard or made it as that type of team (2004,2014,2017,2019 best I can think of).

    The bigger issue with the Chiefs is they are in fact standing in the way of a Bills team who has a franchise QB, and at least during this first window (which has now officially ended) had a roster most considered championship caliber.

    So if you are asking me about rating hatred.....it's not even close between the Chiefs and Patriots dynasties, especially since one of them is just getting started and already ended what might have been the best chance this franchise ever has winning a superbowl 3 times in 4 years in the playoffs.

    I came to post my response, then I found yours, which is exactly how I feel.

    It comes down to a few things:

    Injuries

    Can they improve the WR room with limited cap resources?

    Can they fill out a reasonably capable D-Line with limited cap resources?  Can Von Miller give us a season at decent form?

    Tyler Bass gets his foot straight

    I agree, I would just add that the special teams in general needs to get their ***** straight, not just Bass.

    You need really bad luck to die of prostrate cancer. Survival after 5 years is 99+%

    There are different kinds of prostate cancer. Most are slow growing, and you'll die of something else before you die of that. A small percentage are very aggressive, and very nasty.

    I still find it hard to believe that OJ once ran for 273 yards himself in a single game on Thanksgiving against the Lions...and the Bills somehow managed to lose the game.

    I know there are much worse QBs statistically, but I can’t believe nobody mentioned Rob Johnson. Peterman was a 5th round pick without many expectations to begin with. The amount of resources to get RJ along w/ his terrible robotic play and the Flutie benching make him the most disappointing QB in Bills history. I’ll stand by that opinion until the day I die.

    Most disappointing, sure. But not the worst, not by a long shot.

  11. Fun to read article from SportsDrop on each NFL team's best and worst QBs.

    Quote

    Bills’ Worst: Nathan Peterman

    The Bills have had so many failed quarterbacks over the years that it’s almost impossible to pick just one as the worst ever. But Peterman stands out as a colossal failure in such a short period of time. While he didn’t have high expectations as a fifth-round pick, he failed spectacularly when given a chance.

    During Peterman’s rookie year, he was inserted into the starting lineup a week after Buffalo lost 47-10. He proceeded to throw five interceptions in the first half of the game, getting benched at halftime. Peterman was then forced into Buffalo’s playoff game later that season when Tyrod Taylor suffered a concussion.

    He threw the game-ending interception in a 10-3 loss. Yet, he started two more games the following year, throwing one touchdown and seven interceptions on just 81 attempts, finishing his time with the Bills with 12 picks on 130 attempts.

    Just remember, this is the guy our current coach picked to start at one point.

    Absolutely incredible how this guy ***** the bed when he got the big chance. There have been plenty of really bad QBs for the Bills over the years, but it's hard to argue with just how bad Peterman was when he took the field.

    Others you would argue were worse?

    Thats the throw as a young QB you dream of making. Most guys don't have the arm to do it

    He and I share that

    Honestly, me too.

    I keep thinking that, if they had converted that first down after the two-minute warning, forced KC to use their timeouts, and then scored a TD with seconds remaining, we would have been hailing that final drive as masterful and the overall strategy of beating KC as perfect. Sigh.

    His interview with Florio and Simms was better. Some really interesting snippets:

    - He says his mechanics got off this year because of some of the ailments with his shoulder but he acknowledges he has to get back to working on them (interesting that he said "with the appropriate people" - anyone know if he is still working with Jordan Palmer? I think Palmer did so much on the original mechanical clean ups with the over striding);

    - He talked about his internal dialogue with himself and it is the one worry I have with Josh in terms of temperament. I love that he holds himself accountable but I do worry at times he gets in his own head about stuff and internalises it;

    - Cites the Ty Dunne piece as the one of two factors in the turnaround (without prompting) and then when asked further agrees with Rasul Douglas's view that McDermott's response to that article was the moment things changed;

    - Acknowledges that if he'd just slid up slightly in the pocket on the Shakir throw he probably has a touchdown;

    - His favourite throw is the Jake Kumerow touchdown in Denver.

    Really good interview.

    Good stuff, thanks.

    In the Buffalo News story today, Allen admits the ending of the Chiefs game is going to haunt him all offseason.
