We’re paying $28M in fake salary cap money this year. This will be gone next year. At that time and when the cap inevitably goes up, we will be able to easily afford to pay said top 5 salary cap money. So, I think this comment has about a 12 month shelf-life.

I get the minority hiring comp picks or if a team truly wants a player back, but it seems weird that if a team actively lets a player go, why should they get a comp pick. Edmunds for example, it really doesn’t seem like we had any intention of re-signing him. Then we have a SB team getting the most comp picks, so we can’t say they are given out for parity. -
If there’s this many comp picks being given and to this many teams, they should just get rid of them. Seems like it would be a wash.

Has a defenseman been chosen yet? I’m starting to think BPA may be on defense. The WR position will remain deep.

It was the right move. Did anyone think Cousins was going to get them anything but a string of 9 win seasons? This gives them a QB to groom before Cousins flames out. QB purgatory is real. This was probably there best chance of getting a top 10 pick for awhile. -

- he’s an experienced veteran coach and a true leader. He’s forgotten more about hockey than most people will ever know. He has experience in just about every situation, from rebuilds to win-now and everything in between. And he has a great reputation in NHL circles. He’s well respected among NHL players and maybe now where more than Buffalo. I don’t think he will have any issue getting buy-in from the players.
- He holds players accountable, as we all know. Every player said they needed more accountability. Well, they are getting it! lol
- He is great at implementing structured defensive play. I have zero doubt this team will look much better in the defensive zone. There will be a defensive structure and it will be obvious to us (unlike under Granato…).
- He just successfully coached pretty much the exact system Buffalo is designed to play. If Lindy gets the Sabres playing like the 2022/23 NJ Devils, every Sabres fan will be thrilled. That high speed rushing attack + taking away time & space on defense is exactly what Kevyn Adams wants.
I think his system fits better than Berube. I think Gallant’s system would have fit too but he’s not really known for having good defensive structure. If you go listen to the NY rangers player exit interviews after Gallant was fired, there’s lots of talk about needing better structure (similar to Buffalo player exit interviews this season).- and I don’t think any coach will take more pride in coaching the Buffalo Sabres. Lindy is personally invested in this team + city. He’s lived here since 1979. He knows this town and fan base as good as anyone. He is one of us. I think he is going to help repair the broken relationship between Sabres fans + media and the team.
I also don’t think this was just a nostalgia hire. Lindy was for sure one of the top veteran coaches available. I think a strong statistical argument could be made that he was the best veteran coach available of the top 3 big names (Ruff, Berube, Gallant or even Boudreau). Over the years, his teams have had better underlying stats in important categories vs. Berube and Gallant. He’s 4th or 5th all time in wins for NHL head coaches. He has at least one 50(+) win season with each team he’s coached. He’s gotten every team he’s coached to the playoffs, and he’s won playoff rounds. Berube has that one magical run to the Stanley cup, but otherwise has been mediocre. Gallant’s had success but his overall fit is more questionable. He’s not known for installing structure and I’ve read he relies on veteran players to lead, which Buffalo doesn’t really have.
Of the coaches available, I think Ruff was the best fit. I don’t know if he’s the guy to win us a Stanley Cup. But the Sabres are nowhere near ready for a Cup run. Let’s get back to playoff contention first. I think at the very least Ruff can do that, and get these players playing the right way.

Because we're almost all WR crazy, I'm wondering what you see in Legette's ability to separate at the next level that so many others don't. I am drawn to him as a compelling projection with a compelling past. His physicality would be a welcome addition. But I often get told he isn't a separator, bottom line. How do you reconcile that disparity?

Pretty much. We have a 44-page thread about the Bills rumored to be trying to move up in the first to pick a WR. Anyone, their sister or their cat knows this to be a fact, but somehow it garners so much discussion. -
In hindsight, we all know what we are doing.

The first sentence is saying you should not draft based on need, but you should get that in a FA. Then are you saying that you really didn’t “need” that player that has been providing their service for the last 4 years? It’s the first sentence that is the horrible take. You obviously need to draft based on need. Beane does it with his 1st/2nd round picks each year. Is he wrong? -

What I would like to see is how many of those players ended up having worse draft grades by staying in school an extra year. There’s a lot of money lost if they would’ve went in the 1st, but ended up being drafted in the 2nd. The idiom is penny wise, but pound foolish. That said, at least they got their diploma.

There’s no way Beane trades back. That’s not his MO. What will happen is he’ll trade up a few spots and say that the guy taken was the only guy left with a 1st round grade by them.

Yeah, I’m not liking that either. Usually teams give up a pick in the same round, plus a sweetener. For example, for a 2nd, I would give up next year’s 2nd and a 4th or a 5th.
What I would rather do is give up a 4th or 5th (or whatever the value chart says) and our 2024 2nd to move up to the first few picks of the 2nd. Maybe the Giants would do it.

Because you just don’t get it. It doesn’t matter who drafted Sammy. The risk still remains. Josh Allen will be 28 when the season starts. You would like to blow our load on hope. Hope isn’t a sound strategy. What happens after 2-3 years when we realize the guy is a bust? That’s 2-3 more years of Josh down the drain.
Due to Allen’s contract, this team has holes and will always need to plug them via the draft. If you want to mortgage our future, do it on proven players. Otherwise, draft a couple WR in the 1st and 2nd. Leave next year’s picks alone.

I personally like the makeup of this offense. If you want to go watch fast Smurfs, you can watch Miami. Not only do we have a QB that will run over a linebacker, we now have WR/TEs and RBs to run through them. This offense will wear defenses into the ground. And once that happens, Josh can throw some daggers, ones only he can throw, to put them out of their misery.
