  2. http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap3000000802432/article/information-wars-how-teams-get-the-real-draft-intel The secretary's name and place of employment remain a secret for Greg Gabriel even to this day, seven years after he departed his last NFL job as the director of college scouting for the Chicago Bears. During the draft's most intense moments, his valuable source was nestled inside the office of a college head coach. This was someone Gabriel got to know over his early years in the 1980s as a Buffalo-based Midwest scout for the Bills, National Football Scouting and, later, the New York Giants, where Gabriel was responsible for everything from Syracuse, New York, all the way to Nebraska, from Kentucky to the U.S./Canada border... "The draft is buyer beware," one AFC general manager told me. "We've had schools that we simply won't draft players from. At all. Just because we can't get good information. The most important thing is information, so if you can feel really good about getting accurate information from a school, you feel good about drafting that player." ... The Bills did not respond to a request for comment from NFL.com for this story, though it might be safe to draw a connection between their head of personnel, Jim Monos, and his eight seasons as a Southeast area scout for the Saints, when he would have gotten to know the Seminoles' program quite well. The Steelers, citing a roller-coaster week for their entire staff, could not make general manager Kevin Colbert available, either, though it would not be a stretch to connect their staff's deep Pittsburgh-area roots with those of Meyer, who was born in Ohio and rolled in similar areas for years, eventually returning to become Ohio State's coach in 2012.
  3. I was just playing around btw - not being pissy GMs who leave after the draft generally resign/retire. A team owner canning a GM right after the draft is a bit unprecedented; it usually happens December - January. It would also cast another dark mark on this franchise and we would be crucified as having owners that were indecisive and make poor decision after poor decision. Whaley is here until the end of the season imo...
  4. We have TT, who can run just like Newton. Who needs to throw when you can run... Outstanding! I'm happy we kept this guy because of the play he made at the end of the season too... http://www.espn.com/nfl/recap?gameId=261119034
  5. The team who has folded year in and year out when it comes time for a playoff push. This is exactly why it will be a rinse an repeat 3 years from now, an aging roster with mostly mediocre talent. With no long term plan to build a contender. Create holes & fill those holes; it would be nice to draft BPA and get better players in positions that aren't gaping holes in our roster (upgrades vs. oh crap we don't have enough WRs, CBs, LBs)...
  6. For Rico: http://buffalonews.com/2017/04/25/jerry-sullivan-yet-another-critical-draft-bills/ McDermott acts like a man who expects to win right away, to impose his football genius on an unsuspecting NFL. He's counting on his discipline and preparation to overcome a thin, depleted roster, same as old Gregg Williams did before going 3-13 in his debut in 2001. The NFL is a harsh business. It can bring the eager and naive to their knees very quickly. McDermott will find out soon enough what it's like to inherit a team in decline. But his ego tells him he can make a run. That's why he decided to keep Tyrod Taylor as his starting quarterback. That would be a dangerous play, typical of the short-sighted, inconsistent thinking that has plagued Pegula's franchises. If the Bills were honest about their plight, they would have moved on from Taylor, acknowledged they weren't a contender, and given a full commitment to getting a QB . Sure, good ones fall through the draft. The Bills have sat and watched several slide right by them. They're the last team I would trust to identify the next Russell Wilson or Dak Prescott. These are the same people who saw Manuel as a franchise guy and picked Cardale Jones last year. McDermott might have other ideas. Despite his contention that the picks will be made by consensus, it looks like he'll have the final say. They won't let Whaley and his scouts talk, so what does that tell you?
  7. Kool-aid is flowing strong this time of the year. I used to be a very optimistic fan, but observations and the results of the past 17 years, but most importantly the past 3 lead me to be very skeptical. Others have said it better than me in other threads... This is an entirely different team that is aging since we had a good D with Schwartz. Statistically it was good, but we still had out fair share of defensive letdowns. I really fear that many here expect it it all of a sudden be this great top 5 defense.
  8. This is very well said... You could also say the pendulum of personalities swung dramatically from Dougie to Rex and now to McDermott. Right now McDermott has a benefit of the doubt from most of the fan base since he is unknown. We will quickly see how he is... Not cleaning house on black Monday was a big swing and miss for us...
  9. The Bills like to take a $h!t in your stocking though and is not a pleasant surprise to wake up to...
  10. That's right too; I forgot about that... it is asinine to fire him after the draft... I like him and I think he might be a good GM one day, but I would rather get another outsider in this place... Overdorff needs to go to.
  11. The roster is looking a bit bare (we are weaker than last year) and it ages each year. http://www.spotrac.com/nfl/buffalo-bills/cap/2018/ We have 7 picks this year and that isn't much. We did have a small window with the D when Marrone was here and through Rexy. That window is pretty darn small right now... We need a QB, to fill a few current holes and replace the aging vets. We would also have to be really strong in FA and how we set up contracts as well. I am only confident in Doug's(and our teams) ability to find FAs...
  12. And it will be worse next year when KW is gone, Incognito is up and the team is another year older... Should have burnt it down when Rex went...
  13. jw is getting involved too (has an article on Whaley's diminishing power). I don't want to hijack this thread so I started a new one....
  14. This is all coming from TGs article on Russ Tim Graham‏Verified account @ByTimGraham 10h10 hours ago Old Russ: Involved in football decisions more than you knew. Current Russ: Not as involved as you think. Tim Graham‏Verified account @ByTimGraham 54m54 minutes ago And things have changed/are changing. Once Whaley is gone, Brandon's last link to what happens on the field will be, too. peep show‏ @BuffaloWins I don't think Russ is picking players anymore, but hard to convince me he's not a sounding board for Pegula w/ hiring GMs and coaches Tim Graham‏Verified account @ByTimGraham 25m25 minutes ago McDermott essentially will hire the next GM Brad Smith‏ @Bsmithizzle Is it a foregone conclusion Whaley is gone after the draft? Feels like it Tim Graham‏Verified account @ByTimGraham 14m14 minutes ago I'd been hearing he'd get the 2017 season, but abrupt Sabres moves have changed the mood. I wouldn't be surprised either way Edit: John Wawrow‏Verified account @john_wawrow 2m2 minutes ago And to add to ongoing discussion regarding Whaley's diminishing power, this moved on The AP wire a few hours ago. http://pro32.ap.org/article/rookie-coach-mcdermotts-voice-gains-prominence-bills "Don't underestimate the impact Bills rookie coach Sean McDermott has already made on Terry Pegula. When Buffalo's multi-franchise owner outlined concerns of discipline, structure and character he found lacking in his NHL's Sabres following last week's front-office house-cleaning, they're similar to the troubles Pegula believes he addressed in hiring McDermott." Edit 2 : In Buffalo, there’s a belief that the Bills will be making extensive moves in the front office when the draft concludes. Per a league source, the team’s scouts are bracing for job changes after the draft. As one scout explained it, “We are all getting fired next week.” http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2017/04/26/bills-scouts-bracing-for-a-post-draft-house-cleaning/ Edit #3: Mike Rodak‏Verified account @mikerodak 2m2 minutes ago Interesting comment from Sean McDermott, who uses word "I" when talking about decision not to trade down again from No. 27, before correcting himself and using "we." Lots of ongoing intrigue about how much power McDermott yields within draft room and how much GM Doug Whaley's voice matters.
