  1. The total number of gang homicides reported by respondents in the NYGS sample averaged nearly 2,000 annually from 2007 to 2012. During roughly the same time period (2007 to 2011), the FBI estimated, on average, more than 15,500 homicides across the United States (www.fbi.gov/about-us/cjis/ucr/crime-in-the-u.s/2011/crime-in-the-u.s.-2011/tables/table-1). These estimates suggest that gang-related homicides typically accounted for around 13 percent of all homicides annually. https://nationalgangcenter.ojp.gov/survey-analysis/measuring-the-extent-of-gang-problems
  2. So here is what the Republican platform is so far. Guns for everyone. Oppose any sensible restrictions on access. Open carry and stand your ground laws. Tell teachers how to teach American history Defunding libraries and book banning Increasingly extreme anti abortion laws Telling corporations how they can communicate and market their products Fighting a battle against Mickey Mouse Defending J 6th Defending Trump in every case Restricting voting access for Gen Z Their main media outlet has admitted to repeatedly lying to the public on election fraud Make America Great Again
  3. There is a strong correlation between gun violence and poverty. Most people think of poverty in urban areas, but rural poverty is real too. It’s just not as visible to most people. https://cepr.net/poverty-correlates-with-the-recent-increase-in-gun-violence/
  4. If there were no gun, there wouldn’t be this tragedy. People aren’t perfect.
  5. True, BUT cars are a necessity for most of us in society. We take drivers licenses away from people who are too old, frail, mentally unfit to drive. You need to periodically take vision test to prove your ability to operate the vehicle safely. Police are monitoring our operation of autos and finding those who are irresponsible in their use. We are required to have insurance on the car if we injure anyone. You need a key to operate the car. The purpose of cars is not to kill. Guns are made to kill. The gun industry/right wing media is selling a culture of fear to persuade people to buy guns to “ensure their safety”. Many people buy the guns, don’t have a clue on their safe use or storage. When their mental state deteriorates, or the parents aren’t home, the gun is there providing the opportunity for the tragedy to occur. No gun, no tragedy. Now of course the gun lobby says bad person is the cause, but that logic requires people to be perfect, which we all know is not human nature. People get angry, experience rage, become mentally unstable, paranoid, etc., and reach for their gun, not their car for the solution to their problems. To be clear, I’m talking about instances where law abiding people end up in horrible circumstances because of their gun ownership.
  6. This is f’d up. If they need labor, pay a living wage so adults will take your lousy jobs.
  7. I wonder what the statistical likelihood is of a gun owner with no criminal history being involved with gun tragedy (suicide, homicide, accidental shooting, threatening behavior, child shooting, gun stolen and used in crime, etc) vs the number of those who used their guns for legal self defense. Safe gun ownership requires the owner to have a brain that is rational, clear thinking and of sound judgement 100% of the time. One mistake by the owner and they and the victims lives and families are changed forever. Problem is, people aren’t perfect and the gun is always waiting to deliver tragedy.
  8. All this republican talk of dems grooming children sure looks like projection to me.
  9. No link…yet. Just wait. Isnt that the logical conclusion to all of it though? If aborting an embryo at 7 weeks in a state with a 6 week ban is the taking of a human life, there must be some consequences for the woman who voluntarily killed the person/embryo. To not charge/punish the woman would not be protecting the unborn. That’s not being tough on crime. First it was overturn Roe to allow each state to determine their laws. Now a conservative judge wants to remove medical abortions nation wide. Surely politicians catering to the religious right want a nationwide ban. Some prosecutor, judge, legislature, politician will always want to be further right than those who came before him/her.
  10. I’m sure some republican legislature is working on that one. First outlaw all abortions. Then make the doctors criminals. Next, put the girls/women in prison.
  11. Current federal law requires background checks to be performed for anyone purchasing a firearm at a federally licensed gun dealer–however only 40% of guns sold in the US are sold through a federally licensed dealer. In most states, sales at gun shows, flea markets, and private gun sales are not subject to regulations. States with universal background check laws require that all sales of firearms take place through a licensed dealer who can perform a background check prior to the sale. https://www.aap.org/en/advocacy/state-advocacy/universal-background-checks-for-gun-purchases/
  12. Agree on it is going to get worse. It will be interesting to see if the Republican culture wars impact the decisions of doctors on where to locate. Rural states have always had challenges attracting and holding on to doctors. As America divides on the issues of abortion, guns, education, etc. young doctors will have more factors to consider when choosing where to practice.
  13. Perhaps the full overturn of Roe was best in the long run rather than the death by a thousand cuts approach that was likely the inevitable alternative. At least now the nation can have a national debate on this most difficult topic. Representatives of both parties have to defend their positions to the voters and we find out on what side they stand.
  14. This is supposedly a great draft for TEs, but I haven’t seen any desire for Dorsey to run 2 TE sets. We can barely get Knox the opportunities he deserves. Josh likes throwing to his WRs. We need a big and physical type WR in rounds 2 or 3. No smurfs or tweener types with repetitive skill sets to current players.
  15. Without gerrymandering, the R party is dead.
  16. Not sure where you get your stats but most sources cite 647 mass shootings in 2022. https://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-64377360
  17. They were criminally lied to by a media corporation for ratings.
  18. Both impacts along with rising Gen Z will make it very difficult for republicans to win statewide races in purple states. Their party is surviving on gerrymandering and rural states. What has gone under reported is the 13 states with republican controlled legislatures that have changed election laws to allow the legislature to decide close elections. Their goal is to be able to “legally” flip a close election for the Republican candidate.
  19. Corrupt with no worries of consequences.
  20. I give Trump credit for his project warp speed putting the government backing to vaccine development. I still don’t understand why he didn’t capitalize on it and talk about winning the war against Covid. He could have sold Trump branded masks, etc. I guess he didn’t want to slow down the economy. If he put his full force behind stopping Covid, I think he would have been re-elected.
  21. A friend of mine was a devout believer in the orange guy. Watched Fox constantly. Believed it was all a hoax. Due to his health condition, he was at the very highest risk of mortality from Covid. Yet despite warnings from doctors, he steadfastly refused to take any precautions. No mask, no social distancing, no vax. Tragically or predictably, he contracted Covid and died shortly afterwards. He was much too young to die. There are so many stories like this.
  22. Men convicted of sex crimes should be castrated. If you don’t support that you are on the side of the rapists and child molesters. By the time republicans are done with their abortion laws, 50% of America will support my proposal.
  23. If the court had a liberal majority and a liberal Justice had those allegations against them, Fox entertainment would be running nonstop programming about how corrupt the court is. They would demand his resignation claiming he cannot impartially fulfill his role on the court.
