Whenever a natural disaster like this or hurricanes hit, I wonder to what extent the federal government should be providing money to the impacted people and businesses. I understand the need to provide limited term emergency aide for food and housing. However it also seems that many people expect the government to fund their rebuild when it is their responsibility to have insurance to cover that. The national flood insurance program is underfunded from artificially low premiums. Government and private insurance companies need to adjust their premium rates to reflect the true risk of living in fire, flood or hurricane prone areas as these events are occurring with increasing frequency. If people can’t afford the insurance to live in those locations, then they stay at their own risk or can move to less risky areas. For the power company, if they weren’t replacing their poles and weak poles blew down blocking roads and causing fires, then they are liable. Other than that, the problem seemed to be dry grass fuel with strong wind that caused the fire (thought to be extinguished but not so) to race to the community built from wood. Hard to pin that on the power company. Residents warned the government of this danger as a similar fire at a smaller scale occurred several years earlier. It all seems to be a failure in preparedness.

Senator Tuberville Holding Up Military Appointments
Andy1 replied to Tiberius's topic in Politics, Polls, and Pundits
If a Dem senator pulled this stunt, MAGA would be screaming about how the Dems are hurting the military. It’s time for the pentagon to evaluate base realignment to states where their female enlisted members can get full healthcare. Bases don’t have to be located in these red states. -
Most people would agree with the second part of your statement. However many people want capitalism to work better for people at the bottom of the economic ladder. Hence the popularity of the Rich Men North of Richmond. The Trump tariffs are anti free market capitalism. That doesn’t mean the people wanting change are anti capitalists.

Hopefully the impacted people had good insurance. As large scale disasters multiply as a result of climate change, the insurance industry needs to adjust rates to reflect the true risk and costs of living in risky locations.

This week we also had Mike Huckabee saying that if Trump doesn’t win, bullets will be used in the future instead of ballots. With each suggestion of violence by these right wing idiots, it normalizes the idea inside the heads of lunatics. So the “tactics and methods of a dictator” is our legal system filled with Trump appointed judges who end up making decisions against Trump and former Trump associates who testify against him?

You have to pull those pants up high to get them over the diapers. What a tub of lard.

CBS news and YouGov did the poll.

Well a recent survey showed that Trumpers believe the orange king more than their family or religious leaders so yea, loyalty to the tribe overrides their religious values. In other words… cult.

How many law enforcement officers were injured?

Trump could still win vs Biden, even with his legal issues. Always remember what George Carlin said: “Think of how stupid the average person is, and realize half of them are stupider than that.” I’m also concerned that Biden may have a Mitch McConnell moment or two, maybe in a debate, that could impact voting. Lastly, voter apathy by independents and dems could also result in a Trump win. It seems unbelievable that both parties would nominate these two senior citizens again for a rematch given both their issues. Still a long time to go though, so there is still a chance (maybe?) that things could change.

Why is it always these Trumpers, often self proclaimed Christian conservatives, who threaten violence or civil war if they don’t get their orange king back on the throne? Huckabee is a Southern Baptist pastor. He should be ashamed of himself for suggesting bullets will be used to decide elections. Im pretty sure that’s not what Jesus would say.

That’s an old article but still tragic.

It’s time for the military to start moving bases out of Alabama. -

It’s easy to point out stupid inconsistencies in the response to an event as massive as a once-in-a-lifetime pandemic. Nothing in life is perfect and many choose to make perfect the enemy of the good. What none of the critics on covid control measures offer is any better solution to protect public health. I guess this is to be expected though since they offer no solutions to any other problems.

Are you suggesting that there is nothing at all effective at reducing the possibility of contracting and transmitting a communicable disease? Are you suggesting that the best medical people in the world are all in a mass vaccination conspiracy with Bill Gates to turn us into cyborgs so the government can track our movements? To beat the dead horse some more… If masks are not effective, please go work in a hospital Covid unit without one. Did your mother ever teach you to wash your hands? The vax reduces disease severity. Less virus in you likely means less chance to spread virus. So what’s your bright idea to protect people?
-
The politicization of Covid control measures is one of the stupidest things ever. Covid doesn’t care what party you belong to. And whatever happened to young and healthy people caring for their elders or the weaker people in society. Isn’t that a conservative family value? Covid protocols are nothing compared to the sacrifices older generations made.

This is a stupid juvenile take on masking. If someone chooses to mask up its none of your damn business. You don’t know what health factors people are dealing with that would cause them to choose to mask. Healthy people may have high risk people in their family or they may just want to try to stay uninflected due to work or family responsibilities.

What a bunch of idiots protecting their fragile white male egos.

Wow! We need new blood in both parties.

An astonishing number of people or groups have wrecked their lives after drinking the Trump koolaide. Many associates sent to prison, many believing followers sent to prison, lost jobs, fractured relationships, many dead, a $787 million dollar judgement against Fox, etc…. There probably isn’t another person in America who has as much negative impact on their associates or followers.
