Interesting Article ON OL Importance
4BillsintheBurgh replied to plenzmd1's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I'd like to hear what Shawn Alexander thinks of that logic. Not that Hutchison leaving caused all his woes, but it's got to be a major factor. I agree with Dave, even a marginal difference matters. Parity runs rampant in this league and any small advantage can separate a team. And if that upgrade also buys you more from other positions, you have to consider it. -
Obviously you're not providing him with what he needs. Try halting the nagging and spend some time doing what he likes as well, even if it's not really what you want to do. Might catch his attention. And don't expect him to drop TBD unless you drop Oprah, The View and Dr Phil. Yes, it's that important!!!!!

Who's and Why's of a Trade Down
4BillsintheBurgh replied to Astrobot's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
It would suprise the heck out of me because Jauron is still here. I think we have a better chance at another top flight RB than 2 #1 WRs this year. Mendenhall - Lynch anyone? Of course, I'll also be suprised if we take two pass catchers with our first three picks, assuming they work something out with Evans. I just don't think this tiger is changing his stripes and I think the goal is to run the ball. I think it's more likely that a tall TE becomes a redzone target and we sign some low level (Rasheed Davis) type as a number two WR. Or god forbid someone under 6'2" later in the draft. -
I agree with you to a point, but need is an issue that the Bills have brought into the warroom, and rightfully so because of their past situation. You move up and get players for need in the early rounds, just as we have done in the last two years. This year hasn't seen any full time starters get cut and we're starting to have more quality starters emerge so hopefully we won't have to get anyone by moving up.

I'm hoping someone like Chi wants to jump over Den to take an o-lineman and we can move down.

Deciphering what Marv said on 2/16/07.
4BillsintheBurgh replied to Tipster19's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
We've got two guys at DT that we know very little about and I think OBD wants to let them get settled before investing another high draft pick at the position. Marv mentioned a couple of times during the presser that he's looking for young guys to improve. Marv pretty much left the door open on any position and proved last year that he will take value over need (K Simpson and probably Yobouty). What Marv is being honest about is that the Bills need help just about everywhere and that gives other teams the license to make creative offers to him. So drafting a CB is honest because everythings on the table and that doesn't mean you can't find a run stuffing DT later right? -
Some Possible Solutions to the RB situation:

In order to make a run in the playoffs you need quality backups. Not Tim Anderson type backups. They don't have to be world beaters but you need them to play well. If one of our DT's, lb's or cb's goes down, is there a decent backup that can fill in? And as far as holes I think we need a starting OLB for next year, the current situation reminds me of post-Milloy last year. All the other positions at least have a qualified/potential player in them. As for RB, A-Train is not a long term answer. If they are going to do RBBC this year, how many carries will you need from the starter? 10-15 a game? A-Train can do that given his past record. Why use a 1st rnd pick to fill that need? I would be happy with any of Branch, Okoye, L Brown, Willis/Poz, Hall/Revis or Meachem if Marv & co thought the value was there. This would be a great year to be able to trade down a few spots and add picks. Marv has certainly notified every GM in the league that he is dealin'. We can trade up next year with the thought that we are only a player or two away. -

For what it's worth, I'm with you. If AP fell to 12 I'd try to trade down. I think this gives us a better, more balanced team in the long term and a better shot at going further in the playoffs when we get there. I think the rb draft pick this year should be a third down back who can scare people. If we come out of the gate really well this year, you can trade next years draft picks for someone who can help. I think playoffs are a two year process for us (unfortunately) and we are best served by using this draft class where it's strong and fill as many holes as we can besides a starting rb. -

Defensive stats from last year
4BillsintheBurgh replied to Kelly the Dog's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Hopefully the offensive line improvements will help the defense by upping these numbers (among others) 31st in 3rd down % 32nd in number of plays 32nd in first downs per game -
I wouldn't mind seeing receiving corps upgraded
4BillsintheBurgh replied to Pete's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Actually, I thought Fairchild was there with Warner, but I was mistaken. My fault. What I was talking about was the Rams ability to use their TE in the red zone as well as Holt, Bruce, Faulk etc. In thinking of the Rams from that time until now, I see lots of small fast receivers, sort of what the Bills have now. They didn't put a premium on size. That's why I don't think we have the interest to draft a big receiver. That's why I wouldn't be suprised if they went with Ginn in the first round, although I would be disappointed. -

Shh, don't let it get out. They were only that good because they had to play. I remember some people on this board wishing for Philly's draft. -

I don't know about the big receiver need. I just remember looking at the Rams box score from when Warner was tearing it up and thinking, who the heck are these people catching touchdowns? No big names, just every te and fb on the roster seemed to catch a td during those years. I think they're going to give Robert Royal a chance to be the big receiver and see where it takes them. Since (hopefully) he doesn't have to hold Pennington's hand this year. -
Good point, I'm sure Houston regrets not getting some Bush last year. Like you said, it comes down to what OBD thinks of the players that are available in the draft and I understand that you are saying about players available later. Including that the drop between Lynch and Bush/Hunt/Irons seems to be steeper than the drop from Willis/Harris or whoever. Not to mention the difference between the our current players and the draftees. I would love to sit a room with the Bills to hear how they're ranking these players. From what I have heard about this defense, the MLB is a coveted player and highly sought after. If OBD thinks Willis can be a difference maker, I would value him over Lynch even if they think Lynch can be a quality every down back. In the end, they'll probably both be there but end up going with Levi Brown or Darelle Revis.
-
Sure, anything can happen. I just don't want to take a rb with the first pick because we "need" one. There are options out there even this year, and I think a FA rb and a draft speedster will mesh fine with what we have now. I guess my point is I don't see many FA's out there for other positions, and I would rather hold off on spending the high pick on a rb this year if possible. Even if next years class sucks, OBD could work something like a trade or FA pickup. I also think the team would come together better in 2008 because generally the rb can step in quickly and I would rather have a year of experience for a presumably better lb/cb/dt. So you would have more players on a better learning curve for 2008 and I don't think it would cost too much for 2007.
-
If you look at a two year process, a third down back makes sense. If you fill holes on the defensive side this year and take a 3rd down back with lots of speed, next year you can grab a top rb with a top pick and have a nice 1-2 combo. I think you have to fill areas on the first day keeping in mind where this class is deep, including a WR. Let's get some quality players on defense again lb/cb/1 tech DT on the first day. Then look for a 3rd down back and a lb project on the second because we have enough lb depth but not enough quality. Hopefully with the other first day pick someone will fall to us that is good value, just about any position other than DE.

List of players receiving interest from Bills
4BillsintheBurgh replied to Brandon's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Being on this list has little to do with whether the players will get picked, more about where they end up in the pre-draft ordering. It merely suggests that the work done so far for these prospective picks has left the staff with questions they want to clarify. Or they want someone to think they're interested, etc. If I remember correctly, they didn't talk to Whitner. I guess they didn't need to. -
Let's throw Spikes to the Lions as well and then we don't have to worry about getting all of our holes plugged. We'll just create more as we go.

Do you really know Marshawn Lynch???
4BillsintheBurgh replied to TDRupp's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
This stuff was cut off Marshawn's attempt to win the Heisman and produced by Cal's media department so it's hardly a non-biased source. That notwithstanding, I agree with you and let the staff pick the best player. I think Lynch may be the one available and he seems like a good fit in a lot of ways. It seems like he is a "Marshall Faulk" type and has the winning character Marv wants.
