  1. haha - well according to Chris Brown it hinged on whether the league wanted to count Josh Scobey and Jason Whittle as FA additions last year. I guess they chose not to put them in the equation, thankfully.
  2. http://www.nfldraftcountdown.com/scoutingr...evejustice.html 6'4, 293 (at combine - probably played about ten pounds lighter) Strengths: Athletic and quick...Extremely smart with terrific awareness..Is mobile and can get out in space...Technically sound...Uses his hands well...Light on his feet and slides well...Offers some versatility...Has a lot of experience...Great motor...Hard worker. Weaknesses: Doesn't have the size / bulk that you look for...Is not overly strong or physical...Is not real stout at the point of attack...He will have some trouble taking on massive defenders heads up...Does not get a great push..Not a great fit for every scheme.
  3. Youboty is the big one. Preston is going to have to work hard to make the team. Stroud? if he's not a big factor or can't stay healthy, it's a big problem.
  4. interesting. one potential problem is there is no data to compare this to. Centers generally are the smallest guys on the line, so they're not going to be moving people too much. It could be that centers in general are more often responsible for offensive struggles because of their size and they have the most responsibility to call blocking assignments and snap the ball. that said, Fowler hasn't been great, but there is likely no answer for next year in this draft. Steve justice is a solid 25 lbs lighter than Fowler, and totally unproven as a pro. A guy like Roy Schuening or Mike Pollack could more seriously push Fowler - but we've got other fish to fry this draft. I think we'll have to see how he does with what should be more competent play calling.
  5. Hawkins may have timed poorly at the combine - but he timed 4.47 at his pro day and was the best receiver at the Senior Bowl practices and game - in the one-on-ones he made every corner he faced look pretty bad. scouts think that Zuttah can play anywhere on the line - he has sick measurables too. Here's a good article about him, there's a chance he might go as high as the 2nd because of his potential and versatility. http://www.c-n.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?A...2/1012/SPORTS10 Good points about Flowers - I'm not big on a corner before the 3rd either actually. I like Godfrey from Iowa because of his speed, size and production. Molden looks good too.
  6. he's kind of a tweener - tall, but not real strong; not too slow, but not real fast or quick in and out of breaks. He'll probably go between the 3rd and 5th though. Definitely a consideration for us since we'll most likely be drafting two receivers. I like him a lot as a player.
  7. it's a good trade - nice wishful thinking. Didn't the 49ers just get Justin Smith from the Bengals though? Why are they so desperate for a DE? I like Hawkins and Schmitt in the 4th (though I don't think we'll be willing to use a pick on a FB until maybe the 6th or 7th, I just think that's the way we roll) also I think the ratings on some of these players is way off - but regardless its really just for fun here's my picks: RD#1, Pick 29 -- Limas Sweed RD#2, Pick 40 -- Brandon Flowers RD#2, Pick 42 -- Trevor Laws (too good to pass up) RD#3, Pick 73 -- John Carlson RD#4, Pick 104 -- Lavelle Hawkins RD#4, Pick 111 -- Jeremy Zuttah (he won't be here come draft day - freak athlete) RD#5, Pick 142 -- Ali Highsmith (wow his stock dropped - doubt it dropped quite this much though - might stick with the Chris Harrington pick anyway) RD#6, Pick 173 -- Peyton Hillis (could be a Chris Cooley type, better runner and receiver than Schmitt, not as good a blocker but not bad) RD#7, Pick 204 -- Ben Moffitt (I'd be shocked if he lasted this long) RD#7, Pick 209 -- Adrian Arrington (ditto, though I'm not a big fan)
  8. I think above all it is just true dedication to the game and to improving as a player. A big part of that is not getting distracted with all kinds of off field problems.
  9. interesting draft. Always nice to see some new names being tossed around. I'm a 1st round WR supporter and Thomas might be the best bet - total package - measurables, production, health, toughness I kind of feel like Bennett in the 2nd might be a reach. Bennett seems like he's physically gifted and seems like a good character guy and a solid enough blocker, but his college production doesn't really stand up to some of the other guys like Carlson (as a junior)and Fred Davis - as well as Rucker. Chevis Jackson is intriguing - he's got explosive athleticism (41 inch vertical!!), but very mediocre speed for a corner, and in the Senior Bowl drills he basically just mauled whatever receiver he was going up against. I'm not blown away by either he or Thomas cause they get more press being on top programs and have some serious question marks. But I don't think either of them are unrealistic picks in the 3rd at all.
  10. wow - that's shocking. I watched him closely in some of the Senior Week drills that they had posted online. The guy was very impressive - extremely strong - tossed a couple DEs to the turf in one-on-ones. I thought we might take a look at him as at backup right tackle and maybe move him inside to backup at guard. The Jags were supposedly enamored with him, so I figured he'd be gone by the time we would consider a depth lineman. thoughts and prayers. yet another reminder that these guys we always talk about are mortal.
  11. it always bothers me when the Pats get a high grade for their draft last year. Only one of their draft picks from last year even made their roster. I guess trading away picks for veterans counts toward how you drafted.
  12. I think you have it exactly right. It was hard to know for sure until last year because the protection just wasn't there in the prior years. Last year he was finally given time and he was still panicking in the pocket when the first option wasn't there and then either scrambled toward the sideline (often passing it just before going out of bounds) or making a dangerous or inaccurate pass. After the first option his second tended to be unscripted and all mechanics out the window.
  13. faster delivery than Hasselbeck and not quite as reckless with the football. If you want to compare him to an all time great (which apparently it was ok to do with Favre/Losman), I think he's more like Montana than any of the other hall of famers - unflappable, accurate passer, not the greatest athlete for a qb or the biggest arm.
  14. we have no size in reserve at LB. Mayo could play strong side or middle and would be great insurance next year. Doubt it happens though.
  15. HUGE maybe that Devin Thomas lasts till the 2nd round - qucik reasoning - size, measurables are excellent, was highly productive and doesn't have injury baggage. Many think we might take him in the first. Doucet is a lot like Reed but probably faster and more athletic. Jordy is solid - if a guy like Gonzales in Indy is worth a late first, he's probably worth a second. I kind of see him more as a big slot target with long speed that would cause matchup problems more than I see him as an outside receiver (at least for a couple seasons). Not sure I agree about Manningham being a dropper - but I don't see us taking him anyway - character issues and a little slight for what we are looking for I don't know enough about Caldwell - generally I don't trust Florida receivers for some reason. Great speed though and good size.
  16. i'd be surprised. They don't have enough protection and they don't have the qb. And Isaac Bruce isn't getting old, he's just old. Vernon Davis hasn't shown that he's even a good NFL tight end yet and this will be year 3. I like the 49ers. If I had to pick a second team it would probably be them, but I really don't like many of their recent moves. Martz is a nightmare. Willis is a beast though
  17. I really like Harvey and would be happy if we draft him, but I'd only do it if we think there will actually be a WR in the 2nd that's going to be able to cut it as a starter. We seem to be overlooking the reality that our offense was epicly bad last year at scoring points despite a line that actually succeeded in protecting the quarterback. The defense has already garnered 3 major offseason additions in Mitchell, Stroud, and Johnson which will all either start or be a major part of the defense + is getting Poz, Ko, and Denney back healthy. The offense has only added a few reserve tight ends and an unexceptional fullback. I think people are way underrating this WR crop - there isn't the sure fire top-10 type guy, but there are about 5 mid to late 1st rounders and likely if we wait till the 2nd it'll be the 7th WR off the board at that point. Is that what we want? If Harvey is as good as the scouts are hinting there will be opportunities to trade down - which is what we should do. Don't buy too much in to the "reach" baloney. It's almost always baloney.
  18. He seems like he could be in the Jason Witten mold to me. I wouldn't mind that at all.
  19. I thought it might be Caison, but it looks like its either Arz St. (Josh Barrett) or Ark. St. (Tyrell Johnson) - both highly regarded safeties?
  20. I think for a rookie they may need more time off than a veteran to recuperate mentally and physically from a totally new and highly stressful environment. An established vet that's been through the battles may not need to be around as much but also might not need as much time to mentally recover since the experience is kind of old hat.
  21. http://img219.imageshack.us/img219/6846/draftboardky0.jpg not sure what else it could be 1. DR-C 2. McKelvin 3. Kenny Phillips 4. Mike Jenkins 5. Talib? after that it gets a little fuzzy http://www.draftdaddy.com/blog/nfldraft.cfm
