  1. David Gettleman or Michael Lombardi would be my choices. Then I'd look at Floyd Reese - maybe. But I don't get the fascination with Greg Gabriel. Sure he was from Buffalo. But the Chicago org. hasn't hit big time in terms of scouting college and pro players except for that one year. Plus they're struggling and are perennial almosts the last few years. How is that good?

I don't care that he's from Buffalo. The Bears have had pretty solid drafts with very few high picks.

Reese seems like he's is a million years old (and BTW he's never won anything either). Lombardi is only popular because he's in media and he's outspoken.

  2. Love me some me...

Giants are very good at finding LBs, OLs and DLs and the guy got his start during the crazy good Buffalo Bills years under Polian. He couldn't have come from a better run organization in the Giants. May not be flashy, but Gettleman is still my top choice for GM while admittedly not knowing any of these guys from a hole in the wall.

I just can't think of many pro personnel moves that the Giants have made in recent years. Though not letting critical talent walk is a big deal in itself.

  3. Kid had no defense to help him win games, his top 2 receivers (Flloyd, and the TightEnd his name escapes me) went down for long periods of time. Yet his numbers were still really good.

he's my favorite QB too. but he did have Golden Tate to throw to, who is a great receiver who made a lot of acrobatic catches. but even that shows Claussen trusts his receivers.

  4. In particular I know that the local media led by WGR and Jerry Sullivan will in no way allow an athlete the time to develop that even the best QBs take to develop. Even the best I have seen at the position Peyton Manning took his team from logging 3-13 to draft him was to fast forward to be 3-13 the next year.

This put them in a position to then draft Edgerrin James, and with another first rounder Marvin Harrison they finally became a potent offense.

Yet, despite all this star powers it took the best GM out there constantly doing his waiver wire and negotiation magic to still have to go off the salary cap books and get one of the best D minded HCs in the league to finally win the SB.

After an 0 for the decade playoff run there is no way I can see that this team and it followers will be able to maintain in any sustainable way a team which depends on a young first rounder to be the new "savior". My sense is this team is going to need to go with a vet QB who can deal with the idiocy of a media who will be champing at the bit to create a new QB controversy.

If we take Clausen he is going to need to be part of a winning team immediately and this team does not even have a Ray Lewis to allow a Flacco time to develop that a young QB will need.

I agree that any QB we may draft, regardless of how high, we need to bring in a solid vet (as solid as qb's that are available goes). Unfortunately that quality is capped pretty low.

this logic, though totally true as to fan/media impatience, would make it tough to ever get a great QB and as a result really make it tough to ever be a dominant team for any extended period of time. Unfortunately the only way you get a great QB is through the draft because they don't hit free agency (minus rare aberrations). And having a great QB is the single greatest determinant of success in today's NFL. You can luck out by stumbling upon a Tom Brady or Kurt Warner, but those are exceptions to the general rule. The best QBs in the league were overwhelmingly drafted in the first round and by the team they are still on.

  5. Then he may be in favor of keeping the Tampa 2 scheme.

And he may be in favor of keeping Fewell. :flirt:

And he may even like the idea of bringing in Lovie Smith after he is fired.

I still say no, the year they made the SB was the flukiest year in a long, long time... not impressed with the Bears at all.

They've had a very good track record in their drafts. As for the cover-2, I don't know if the head of college scouting has much sway over what defense the team he works for runs. he scouts and drafts players to fit the roll that the coaches want. Winning is very tough without a star qb. They went to the Superbowl with Rex Grossman on the back of a defense that he largely drafted.

  6. the two that stand out to me:

Greg Gabriel, Chicago's head of college scouting last 8 years - Chicago has been largely built through the draft this decade

Eric DeCosta, head of Ravens college scouting '03 to '08 and now pro personnel - one of the best organizations when it comes to choosing talent

  7. McShay really doesn't like Claussen. I hope he's right, in that he'll still be there when we draft. I've been very impressed by Claussen despite virtually always wishing that he would fail miserably.

McCoy isn't in the same class as a passer.

  8. my favorites,

Best Action Movie - Inglourious Basterds

Best Drama - Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind

    Best Comedy - Knocked Up

    Documentary - King of Kong

biggest disappointments - Star Wars prequels, Indiana Jones IV, Matrix Revolutions

definitely feel like I'm forgetting some, decades are long

  9. Remember how Bellichek ate Preston's lunch at the end of a half by having him mauled and letting time run out so the Bills could not get lined up for a FG. Well that type of tactic will work at least twice a year against us now. This guy is a Bozo. He has no self control, none, nada.

yep. only upside is maybe he'll be nuts enough to hurt a Patriot in the process. Bellichik might be less willing to pull that stuff then.

  10. -The Patsies won't win the AFC east next year. That defense is in a shambles. They can't get to the QB and the secondary is terrible. I have a strange feeling Randy Moss is not through being a distraction either. Couldn't happen to a better team.

I think the only thing keeping the Pats competitive is Brady and Welker. I honestly believe that the if you removed the QB position, the Bills would be a better team than the Pats this year.

Unfortunately, if you have a very good QB you are at a bigger advantage than at any time in the history of football. And just look at the records from this decade - Manning several times nearly going undefeated, Brady going undefeated sans 1, Brees and Manning heading in that direction this year; touchdown and points records.

It's no longer a run and stop the run league, it has been made into a pass and stop the pass league.

  11. watched his snaps on NFL Replay in the first half of the game last week. He's a dominant blocker but he loses his mind when run blocking: goes after people, retaliates when things don't go his way after the whistle. I can see why a linebacker wouldn't like him. If he can learn to shut it off at the whistle he'll be golden.
