Add Jim Kelly's grit and determination as well. -

I've been down this road before with Jauron. It won't matter who the QB is. The offense will not be a strength with him as head coach. Give him the '85 Bears defense and he'll win. Short of that, start thinking about who the next coach should/will be. I've sweated the QB fiasco for many months now. I'm over it. It won't matter. -

As long as Jauron is the HC, it won't matter who plays QB. -

Exactly. It'll be "Holcomb like" once again. I say sign Kelly to another contract and make him the backup. That'll give the team and coaches continuity. It won't matter which QB is in there since they have similar styles and capabilities. I'd let Trent be the starter, though since Kelly wasn't as popular with the fans. -

Yeah, the offense was so much better with Trent in there. -
I like the direction the Bills are headed with personnel. Don't like what the coach is doing with the players. To win in the NFL you need a winning level of talent and a winning approach to the game. I don't see the winning approach. I do see the same DJ that I watched here in Chicago for several years. That's really disappointing to me. When he was hired by the Bills, several friends here in Chicago chuckled and said to me "good luck". I defended the hire then saying that Jauron will have learned a lot the first time around and will be better for that experience. So far I don't see that. What I see is the same overly cautious, manage the game to keep it close and hope to win it in the last 4 minutes crap that he deployed in Chicago. His public presentations from week to week about the last game or the next game are mirror images of what he said here in Chicago. It's a friggin miracle that the bears won 12 or 13 games that one year when he was coach. They had an amazing stretch of lucky plays at the end of games and played in a very weak division. My Bills crystal ball shows a rise in the talent level in Buffalo with a playoff birth and early exit in '09 and that being the peak of the DJ era. Being wrong about this would be great.

Before we all come to the conclusion that Fairchild leaving will mean a quantum shift in play calling, consider this. It is usually the head coach (and Jauron has stated this in interviews) that will recommend a type of play in a critical situation. He may not call the exact play, but he will tell the OC in a 4th down situation, goal-line situation, 3rd and short, etc to "I want to run" or "throw it short" or "two tight ends". They also game plan for these situations. Fairchild does't just decide to run in goal-line situations all by himself. He calls those plays based on what they have already planned to do in critical situations or with input from the HC at that time. Y'all might be disappointed again this year unless Mr. Jauron shows some confidence in the offense and is more aggressive about scoring points.

Both of these statements are terrifying. We have to hope DJ learned from his last HC experience and he makes some changes, and it might be a little soon to label Trent as someone he can ride. Trent has a long way to go yet. -
My ideal draft would be for a new head coach.

1. I think the Bills schedule is tougher this year than last. A lot of the "iffy" teams the Bills play this year will likely be improved. The road schedule won't be easy and some of the home games are against tougher opponents. 2. It could take some time for the newer and younger talent to put it all together. POZ is nearly a rookie still. Same with Trent. 3. I don't see the exit of Fairchild as a big plus. The Bills have a rookie OC and a head coach that is not known for his offenses. Jauron IMO could have the Patriot's offense personnel-wise and finish in the middle of the pack in production. -

7-9 or 8-8 looks about right to me. This team has a long way to go, but is moving forward talent-wise. -

When the Bills made the decision to go with Edwards, it was a big one. Essentially you're winding the QB development clock back to zero. Even if Trent becomes a very good QB, it's reasonable to expect that to take another couple of years. It's a very tough position to play and to master. The Bills are young, are still adding talent and have some inexperienced coaches (OC and O-line coach at least). To me this looks like another year of "rebuilding". I don't see the Bills as playoff material yet. JP may be a Bill this year and this might be the best place for him even if he plays very little. The Bills get a backup for the year and JP gets a paycheck and distances himself from what happened last year. If Trent gets hurt or falters, JP may get another shot at playing time - and both scenarios have some probability. As a free agent next year, he can shop himself without any team having to give any compensation for him. That'll open up some doors for him. A lot can happen in a year so who knows what his situation and that of the Bills will be then. -
He's a blue chip talent. If I were the GM, I'd make every attempt to get him signed and once done, inform the head coach he had better figure out a way to generate a return on the investment. The Bills are giving Jauron some talent to work with. The pressure is now shifting to him IMO.
-
Agree. The Bills need difference makers at several positions. Get players who look like they can make a difference with the earliest picks. Bills are only one injury and one free agent defection on both lines from having another problem. Center and DE (Kelsay/Denny) still question marks on this team.

Which player do you think
keepthefaith replied to BillsD#1in2008's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Josh Reed might be the guy. After several years of mediocre numbers, he could flourish in this 4-yard pass offense. Previous QBs that he has played with (JP and Bledsoe) were less inclined to throw short. Edwards loves the "4 yard get rid of it before I get killed heck even throw it while I'm still dropping back just to be safe and I need to improve my completion percentage anyway plus the head coach wants me to play it safe and I need to keep him happy" offense. Reed could end up with huge numbers this year. Numbers like 160 completions for 600 yards or so. New NFL record for receptions. He's also the receiver that is best able to break tackles by linebackers and is also a great team player. A guy that is willing to do whatever it takes to keep his NFL career afloat. This team and the current offensive scheme could benefit from having 2-3 Josh Reeds. -
If he can run 4 yard routes, catch 4 yard passes and take a big hit from a linebacker, he should be signed.

Want some of the Bills old astro turf?
keepthefaith replied to Just Jack's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I have a scale model football field (about 3 feet long) lettered and marked with yard lines and end zones which is made form early 90's turf from Rich Stadium. These were offered after the Bills changed the turf then. It's labeled "1991 AFC Champs". Really a nice piece. -
Orton's got some game. Don't count him out.

Yes, but he had a guy named Marchibroda who had been around the coaching block a time or two and he knew how to get the most from those great players. Jauron had a chance to hire a new OC this past off season. Maybe Turk will be a good one, but of all the people Jauron could have hired, will he be the best? If you looked at all possible candidates, would another coach conclude the Turk is the best OC out there? Looks like a path of least resistence hire to me. -

DJ has no idea what page he should be on. I can tell you this though, when he opens the play book, he skips the section marked "Offense".
