We have a winner...

Tough to evaluate him at this point... At least he wasn't totally under the radar

I'm afraid to open that link, given the subject matter...

Curtis Modkins - Is He Needed?

Glad to see this gem of a thread bumped again.... -
The world is ending this year, I'm convinced

Nah. More like plagerism. Mort said the same thing a few weeks ago. If there's one thing these media guys are, it's lazy. Rather than working hard and developing their own opinions, they all parrot the same group think. Then again, it may just be a realization that none of this talk matters... -
Camp fodder Nothing special as an athlete: Vertical Leap: 32 inches 3-Cone Drill: 7.22 seconds versus Combine results for draftable WRs

What's that make the fans!?

As they well should. The #2 WR can certainly be upgraded. But with only so many bullets in the gun, every GM has some kind of weakness on his roster that has to be covered up a bit. The 3-headed monster of Jones, Easley and Graham (on paper) appears to be better than what we entered the season with last year. Can it be improved on? You betca. Will it put the kibosh on a playoff run? I suspect they can work around it...
-
Already marginalized? Just one week after having 5 grabs for 101 yards? Going out in week six makes it hard to be so definitive about that statement, IMO...
-
Bupkis. If Graham can duplicate Beebe's career stats he'll have justified his 3rd round value. Given that it's a more pass happy NFL today, that shouldn't be too hard. Even discounting his stats, Beebe played an important role in clearing out the underneath stuff for Reed.
-
Yep. Jones had 16 grabs for 174 yards (10.9 avg) through the first five games before his injury. That translates to 51 catches for 557 yards over a 16-game season--about what you want out of your #2 guy. After he went out in week six (ommitting a brief 2-game return when he was still playing hurt), they had no perceived deep threat and it was easy to gameplan against them. A combination of Jones-Easley-Graham can probably improve on that production...

Those games were close because our defense was so pourous. I suspect it'll be stouter this year, giving Chan more flexibility to run a balanced attack. While he's certainly a less than ideal option, Jones can be the #2 with Easley spelling him based on his development and Graham as the change-up flier. It's still a weakspot, but they can't plug every hole (nor can any team).

Who said anything about greatness. The point was whether he'd be in football shape. He was raw coming out of UConn and will need a lot of reps at SJF. But he's also had two years of absorbing the playbook and working with the coaching staff, so he didn't just fall off the tunip truck... Donald Jones isn't the long-term solution, but there wasn't that much pissing and moaning about the #2 wideout when they were 5-2 last fall. If Easley needs more time to settle in and can contribute even modest snaps by week 4-5, then Chan will find a way to make it work...

There's this thing called traing camp. And preseason. Maybe you've heard of them? He'll be in plenty good football shape come September...

I thought you had to pay to write for them?

What's the draft have to do with it?

Grade Past Years drafts 2005-2009

When Martin arrive at Palo Alto in 2008 from Harvard-Westlake School in Studio City, he weighed 261 pounds, too skinny to push anyone around. Says Shaw, "We had to get him to be a more physical blocker." First, Martin had to beef up. As a redshirt freshman, he bet center Sam Schwartzstein a steak dinner that he could reach 270 faster. (Martin won and later added 42 pounds.) The last time Cordy Glenn weighed 261 he probably wasn't shaving yet. Martin appears to not be naturally "NFL big," so it will always be a battle for him to maintain his weight/strength. Nawrocki analysis: “I don’t think he has left tackle feet, and I don’t think he has right tackle power,” Pro Football Weekly draft analyst Nolan Nawrocki said during a conference call. “So when you boil it down, coming into the league next year, I think he’s an ideal swing backup, your third tackle. To me, the value on that position is really in the fourth round. That’s where you’d like to get a player like that, [but] because of the need for a tackle, I think there’s a good chance he’ll get looks in the second round. It wouldn’t even surprise me if he were drafted late in the first, given the run on that position every year. “In another year, he could be OK. I think he’s gotta redshirt in the NFL essentially and really buy into a strength program and get a lot stronger. He wasn’t ready to come out [of college], and it could prove to be the right decision for where he’s gonna get drafted. But I think when you’re talking about matching up against [the elite defensive linemen] of the NFL, he’s gonna have a very difficult time handling that type of physicality.”

He's not speed guy, though. More of a down the seam TE-lite.... Yeah, that's the plan, so they don't overload him with responsibilites at the get go. Still, he looks like real kickoff threat and I hope he can get reps there later in the season, if all goes well... -
Is he a Craftsman or a Snap-On guy? 17 career starts is an enormous hurdle he's going to have to overcome...
-
Yeah, I hear you. He seems like the least polished of the top 5 picks (from a route running, WR experience level). Hopefully he'll be easy to coach up and can find ways to get off the line against press coverage. His small hands/fumbling experience are a worry as well. Still, his return skills are something that would be valuable if Chan decides to let him have some reps there. That 103-yard kickoff return video I posted is electric...

Thanks, I was worried this wit and wisdom might have got overlooked in the Graham thread...
