Thanks for the good laugh...

Over his 15 years in the NFL, his teams have finished in the top 10 in rushing 9 times...not too shabby. Average team rushing rank (1997 to 2011)--11th overall (average 2,035 yards, 4.4 YPC) 2011 Tampa--30th 2010 Minnesota--10th 2009 Minnesota--13th 2008 Minnesota--5th 2007 Minnesota--1st 2006 Minnesota--16th 2005 Detroit--26th 2004 Detroit--19th 2003 San Francisco--5th 2002 San Francisco--6th 2001 San Francisco--2nd 2000 San Francisco--18th 1999 San Francisco--1st 1998 San Francisco--1st 1997 San Francisco--8th Other than the 2011 stint in Tampa (LeGarret Blount) and his two years in Detroit (Kevin Jones) , his teams have had really strong running games. And yes, it helps to have Adrian Peterson and Garrison Hearst for much of that time! This looks like a very good hire, although I wonder why he was out of the league in 2012....

Those kind of hypotheticals are just whistling in the wind. I doubt even Chip Kelly would have been a unanimous choice among all the elements of the front office, given the big question marks around his lack of NFL experience. There were no slam dunk choices this year among the retreads. And among the up-and-comers, Marrone's resume/potential is among the best (or near the top) of the other HCs hired so far, IMO. This would all have been moot if some of the assistants he's hired hadn't caused the chattering class (me included on the Driesbach hire) to second guess and scratch the scabs of past coaching failures at OBD.
-
Why does it have to be lying? I take that quote to mean that after a consensus decision is made (based on internal give and take), OBD personnel should publically stand behind it. Nothing more than any other heirarchical organization would do...

Perfect summation, PTR... His biggest fault is he's lazy and writes to the "lowest common denominator" (ie, drunk on a barstool) audience... -

UPDATE 2:15 p.m. ET: The Lions have announced that they hired Curtis Modkins as running backs coach/run game coordinator
-
Well...perhaps they needed a job. Reports are that the Lions asked the Browns for permission to interview their ST coach, even before Crossman bolted. As for Driesbach, he was fired by Rice in December 2011 and apparently was out of coaching last year.
-
A good leader should always hire the best people he can (including those who could end up being their replacement). The ability to work together is important, but the end result -- not comfort level -- is the bottom line. Not too impressed with this hire, or with Driesbach if his Central Bucks West connection got him the job...

Only if he can bring Patrick Willis to Buffalo!! I'd appreciate why you think he's a coup since it appears he sat out the 2012 season. Not slagging him, but his lack of NFL experience seems curious even if he has a connection with Pettine. http://www.riceowls..../120511aaa.html Ohhhh K.... http://www.freep.com...-danny-crossman http://www.mlive.com/lions/index.ssf/2013/01/special_teams_coordinator_dann.html

Bills hire Doug Marrone to be Head Coach

You say that like it's a bad thing! I gotta believe Nassib's on their radar and they may actually wheel a deal a bit with the 8th selection to land him at a more reasonable slot, adding another pick in the process. I have a suspicion the old "stand pat and pick the BPA" approach may be another trend Brandon & Company break this year... -

Herm Edwards: http://blogs.canoe.c...prepared-coach/ “He’s a very hands-on coach, and good with the fundamentals and techniques,” said Edwards, 58, who coached the Kansas City Chiefs from 2006-08 after the Jets. “He’s disciplined. And he’s very competitive. Now, sometimes on the sidelines he doesn’t look like it. He’s not going to get overly dramatic. But his teams will be well-prepared." Was Marrone wise to take an NFL job while his popularity iron was hot? Edwards said yes. “You do,” he said. “People don’t realize that along with those seven head-coach vacancies come at least 15 to 18 assistant-coach vacancies at each place. Well, there are guys looking for work. So now, when you have a guy other teams also wanted, you the opportunity to hire good assistant coaches, too.”

Pro Football Weekly: http://www.profootballweekly.com/2013/01/06/insider-brandon-makes-great-hire-in-marrone The following quotes are from NFL scouts, coaches and front-office personnel, speaking on the condition of anonymity. • “I’m impressed by what (Bills president/CEO) Russ Brandon is doing. You look at what happened with Mike Holmgren (in Cleveland) and Hue Jackson (in Cincinnati) — history is not on the side of guys acting as the owner. Anyone who knows (Syracuse head coach) Doug Marrone knows it was a great hire. I love the fit. It was very smart finding someone local. They’ll find a quarterback and move (GM) Buddy Nix out of the way after the draft, and they’ll be on their way.”

Sean Payton comments / endorsement: http://www.nola.com/saints/index.ssf/2013/01/new_orleans_saints_coach_sean_220.html "Payton said he absolutely saw qualities in Marrone when he hired him in 2006 that would translate into Marrone becoming an NFL head coach at some point. Payton said it was only a matter of when. "He was someone that was on that original staff when you look at Dennis Allen who's out at Oakland now, and Doug Marrone, these guys came back in '06 after Katrina. ... When his opportunity came at Syracuse, it was his alma mater and he was able to get that program turned around," Payton said. "I think he'll do a great job. I really do. I know he had a handful of options this offseason with some of these pro teams. I'm excited to see him get this opportunity. He deserves it." Some other good quotes from the o-linemen he coached as well... -

Who really thinks Nix is in charge with this hire?
Lurker replied to Kelly the Dog's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
IMO, Buddy's here through the draft and then, back to either {1} being a "super scout", focused on the SEC or {2} his Tennessee porch. Either way, I thank him for stabilizing the ship, even if the wheels fell off a bit this year based on the preseason expectations...
