Why I believe Jordan Phillips wasn't retained
Lurker replied to Buffalo716's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
This take from Sports Illustrated had me rolling on the floor. It just goes to show how few national guys pay attention to the Bills... https://www.si.com/nfl/2020/03/28/nfl-draft-team-needs-all-32-teams "...GM Brandon Beane and head coach Sean McDermott can shift their focus to their defense, which last season played like the single best-coached unit in football. That unit, however, lost arguably its best defensive lineman (certainly best interior lineman, at least) when free agent defensive tackle Jordan Phillips signed with Arizona." -

That's the key to me. An OG's effectiveness depends on the efficiency of the OT and C on either side of him. The Panthers were playing rookie OTs that surely struggled when thrown right into the fire. That may have (indeed, most likely) hurt Williams play as well. With a much more settled OL in Buffalo, playing limited snaps, he may be much more effective... -
Boy, that's tough news. He had his left lung removed in2013, so this is going to be a tough battle for him. Fingers crossed....

For those that want a RB in the first few rounds
Lurker replied to Virgil's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
All I know is I want an RB2 who doesn't miss a beat and executes the same offense as RB1 with virtually no drop off. Not like Gore, who literrally wasted downs during the second half of the season...- 156 replies

OK. I'm coming around on Greenard a bit more. I've been disappointed in this year's edge class, but the SI article below had a few things that are making me warm up to him: https://www.si.com/college/florida/football/florida-gators-jonathan-greenard-nfl-draft-combine 34.9" arms--the 13th-longest among edge rushers at the NFL Combine since 1999 7.13-second three-cone (66th percentile) and a 4.34-second 20 yard shuttle (75th percentile), good for second and third-best among defensive linemen at the Combine this year, respectively For comparison's sake, notable NFL pass rushers that finished between the 65th and 75th percentiles in at least one of the three-cone and 20-yard shuttle (at a similar size) include Chandler Jones of the Arizona Cardinals, Preston Smith of the Green Bay Packers, and Frank Clark of the Kansas City Chiefs. He appears to be rising up the boards and probably will go before #54. Any thoughts on how far the Bills would have to trade up in Round 2 to get him? Edit: he was scheduled for a visit to OBD before the COVID-19 shutdown: https://www.buffalorumblings.com/2020/3/16/21181053/2020-nfl-draft-buffalo-bills-reportedly-planned-to-meet-privately-with-jonathan-greenard Edit2: https://buffalonews.com/2020/03/11/buffalo-bills-nfl-draft-ross-blacklock-jonathan-greenard/ "The Buffalo Bills met with TCU defensive tackle Ross Blacklock and Florida edge rusher Jonathan Greenard at the NFL scouting combine and plan to spend additional time with both. Greenard has visits or private workouts scheduled with the Bills, New York Jets and Houston Texans, he told the Draft Wire. He also will meet the Titans at his Pro Day on March 31."

RB is a really GLARING need, right?
Lurker replied to Richard Noggin's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
And who would that be? Epenesa? Nice player but not a game changer. Same for Gross-Matos. It's a down year for edge rushers, IMO, and I can't see them reaching even if one drops into the top half of the 2nd round... -

Carolina's entire OL was a mess last year. They started two rookies at LOT and moved Williams all around out of necessity, not scheme. No question, he's a risk due to the knee. But a good risk in that he's still young (28 on oppening day) and might thrive in a swing / backup role...

I guess we see things differently. I don't see why RB1 and RB2 can't get equal touches, not one guy being a 'bell cow' and the other being a 'give him a blow' type. Absent having a true bull, like Derrick Henry, I see RB being similar to WR. You wouldn't want to have just one or two quality WRs (like the Bills had last year)--you want three or more high end WRs like we now have. Same holds for RB, IMO... -

IMO, you need two starter quality RBs today, especially when our RB1 is undersized like Singletary. To me, the focus should be on getting an equal or better RB in the draft -- in round 2 or 3 -- and having no drop off when either guy is is on the field. Getting a veteran RB3 is fine, but I don't understand why we shouldn't maximize our OL advantage by having the best RB room possible... -

There are not enough hospital beds in the country to just say "let's all get it and take our chances"... -
That's the way I see it as well. It's an underwhelming group this year and I can't see them drafting for DE need at #54...
-
Agree. And the beauty of those needs is that both positions have among the lowest learning curves for rookie contributors...

"...Before his injury in 2018, Williams had been in line for a big contract after a 2017 season in which he started 16 games for the Panthers at right tackle. Pro Football Focus gave the 2015 fourth-round pick out of Oklahoma a grade of 78.0 that ranked third among right tackles in the NFL." https://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/28959740/source-bills-sign-ol-daryl-williams-1-year-deal Still only 28 years old. Well worth taking a chance on...

If the player warrants it, I don't think Beane would pass on a 2nd or 3rd round CB. It's still a big need, even with the two vets he signed--both of whom likely won't be here next year. McD likes young players (i.e., Darryl Johnson, Jaquan Johnson) to sit and learn behind vets for a year and I can see that happening again... -

Disagree. After sitting out an entire year, Gains is probably making just over the vet minimum ($950,000 in his case) and is 50/50 to make it out of camp, IMO. They need a young CB just as much today as they did yesterday...
