And yet, that's how you get paid in the NFL. It's no wonder so many guys who signed big money contracts two years ago are being released around the league this week. If you're going to get that kind of coin, you have to be a difference maker. And as much as Andy was an important asset, he wasn't (by dint of the position he plays) enough of a difference maker to tie up that much cap space.

Just think of how this board would have reacted if he was the #1 pick in his draft class, instead of #51...

Too much for an OG who's never made a Pro Bowl or had playoff experience. He's a fine player, but that is a budget buster...

DeadSpin - Convo Between Nix and Tampa GM

Gawker (Deadspin's 'parent') is a New York-based company and is just as exposed as the 'kids' for replaying the conversation. It will be really interesting to see what their legal response is to this prank... -

The 'kids' are in the breeze, but the eavesdropping statutes are pretty clear and apply to any third party (Deadspin) that replays the conversation without permission. Florio on PFT is a lawyer and his 'ten foot poll' is in full extension on this one: http://profootballta...-nfl-security/ http://www.federalcr...ithout-consent/ Disclosing information gained from an illegal interception is a federal offense where the person knows or has reason to know that the information was gained illegally. http://epic.org/priv...etap/98-326.pdf "This is true of the wiretapper or electronic eavesdropper and of all those who disclose information, that in fact can be traced to a disclosure by the original wiretapper or eavesdropper, with reason to know of the information’s illicit origins..." Looking more and more like a "Stupid Criminal" story from News of the Weird... -

Deadspin is liable though since they distributed a private conversation that was known to be illegally taped... -

Agreed. Paying $7 million per year for Levitre is a luxury the Bills can't afford with so many other holes to fill. It's the same for the 'Fins and the #1 overall pick from a few years ago... -

I'm no lawyer, but that has to be illegal eavesdropping. I'd love to see the NFL sue the $hitt out of this guy... https://www.privacyrights.org/fs/fs9-wrtp.htm "Electronic eavesdropping is the use of an electronic transmitting or recording device to monitor conversations without the consent of the parties... "The FCC has acknowledged the importance of privacy in telephone conversations by placing additional restrictions on tape recording such conversations..." "Federal law allows recording of phone calls and other electronic communications with the consent of at least one party to the call. A majority of the states and territories have adopted laws based on the federal standard. But 12 states require the consent of all parties to the call under most circumstances. These are are California, Connecticut, Florida, Illinois, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Montana, Nevada, New Hampshire, Pennsylvania, and Washington..." Illegal Disclosure of Information Obtained by Wiretapping or Electronic Eavesdropping http://www.fas.org/sgp/crs/intel/98-326.pdf Title III has three disclosure offenses. The first is a general prohibition focused on the products of an unlawful interception: • any person [who] • intentionally • discloses or endeavors to disclose to another person • the contents of any wire, oral, or electronic communication • having reason to know • that the information was obtained through the interception of a wire, oral, or electronic communication • in violation of 18 U.S.C. 2511(1) • is subject to the same sanctions and remedies as the wiretapper or electronic eavesdropper. Criminal Penalties Interception, use, or disclosure in violation of Title III is generally punishable by imprisonment for not more than five years and/or a fine of not more than $250,000 for individuals and not more than $500,000 for organizations. The same penalties apply to the unlawful capture of cell phone and cordless phone conversations, since the Homeland Security Act repealed the reduced penalty provisions that at one time applied to the unlawful interceptions using radio scanners and the like. Civil Liability Victims of a violation of Title III may be entitled to equitable relief, damages (equal to the greater of actual damages, $100 per day of violation, or $10,000),163 punitive damages, reasonable attorney’s fees and reasonable litigation costs.164 A majority of federal courts hold that a court may decline to award damages, attorneys’ fees and costs, but a few still consider such awards mandatory. -
Yeah, that brain fart was pretty funny. I guess Tempo better plan on ordering a bit less food this week...

Boldin undoubtedly had a say in which teams he'd agree to be traded to (i.e., SB contenders). We don't fit that bill...
-
A true #1 free agent (Wallace, Jennings, Cruz, Bolden if he's released) would never sign here with the current unresolved QB situation, IMO. Better to go after guys like Gibson who can develop like Stevie did than overpay for production earned with top-10 QBs who won't be throwing to these kind guys in Buffalo..
-
Agreed. I like the body control he showed in those highlights. He'd be an affordable complementary #2, with TJ as the outside speed guy and Smith the change of pace swingman. Add a draftee in the mix as well as a good down the field TE option like Cook or Bennett and the receiving corps would be solid, if unspectacular.

Sports Economist Rodney Fort on Panthers Finances
Lurker replied to NoSaint's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Per the Census Bureau, Charlotte is the 33rd largest U.S. metro area, based on 2011 population (1.8 million). http://www.census.gov/popest/data/metro/totals/2011/index.html Only six NFL teams have smaller markets--Indianapolis, Nashville, Green Bay, Jacksonville, New Orleans and Buffalo (although Buffalo's true size is masked by the Canadian border). -

Without revenue sharing, they would have run a $14 million operating loss in 2012. In 2011, the only way they made an operating profit was by keeping the payroll $25 million under the salary cap. The small market teams are dependent on league revenue sharing, which is why Jerry Jones and his peers B word about teams like the Panthers... -
