A Few Thoughts About The "Best Player Available".....
Lurker replied to Bill from NYC's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Just to play Devils Advocate, a four-year contract for an OG picked at #8 would likely be a lot less than the $46.8 million ($27 million guaranteed) Levitre got. For example, Matt Kalil (picked at #4 last year) got $19.8 million (fully guaranteed) for four years. Ryan Tannehill (#8 last year) got a four-year $12.6 million deal. So if you think Warmack or Cooper are upgrades to Levitre, a case could be made that $12-$13 million is good value for the four years you have the position locked down. Not saying that its right--OG is just not big enough an impact position to spend a top-10 pick on, IMO--but the new CBA makes it something that can't be dismissed -
"The last guard taken in the top 10 was Chris Naeole, who went 10th overall to New Orleans in 1997. Since the Bills took Ruben Brown 14th in 1995, Naeole is the only guard drafted higher." http://blogs.buffalonews.com/press-coverage/2013/04/road-to-the-draft-chance-warmack.html?ref= Since the bills are going to be running an up tempo no huddle, I think Jonathan Cooper would be a better fit if they actually wanted to go this route...

I thought Ralph wasn't going to be in the war room anymore....

No it's not. But hanging your shingle on a 174-pound WR is a LOT of risk to take for a team with an unsettled QB situation, no linebacking to speak of and a big, big void at LG. If you want a high risk, high reward playmaker, I'd rather go with Patterson...

Simple. You don't add a gold plated 3-d projection entertainment system to a house with no roof or furnace....
-
CJ is 5'11" and 200 lbs...a lot bigger than 5'8" and 174.
-
If ever there was a year for a trade down, this is it, IMO. I like the 'Boys scenario, but Buddy just seems too old school to pull it off, however...
-
Production differences aside, a 174 pound body is a 174 pound body. Austin's a thin-boned 174 to boot, rather than a Steve Smith type who could bulk up to withstand NFL punishment. Like the concept, but fear the size issue would always limit his ability to play 16+ games on Sundays...

How much is the player and how much is the way college offenses are set up today? It's Playstation football in college today, IMO. The NFL is taking some of that approach as well, but the DBs and LBs at this level can deliver a lot more 'thunder and lightning' than the guys Austin's been playing against in the FSB...

This depth chart is certainly an issue: http://www.buffalobills.com/team/depth-chart.html Jonathan Cooper (a Levitre clone/upgrade) would have to be considered a possibility, IMO. Problem is, #8 seems too high for a guard, even if he'd be a day-one stater. Haven't heard Brandon Moore's name mentioned in a few weeks. Wonder what's up with that...

http://www.cbssports.com/nfl/blog/pat-kirwan/22020971/any-number-of-teams-would-be-wise-to-pick-up-free-agent-clabo I would not be opposed to going after him. Both RTs ended up on IR last year, so there's some questions there. Buddy obviously liked him in 2011, and may still have an interest in a guy who's started every game over the last five seasons. Doubt it will happen, though, since he seems to be drawing interest from the 'Boys and Jags... http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2013/04/05/cowboys-jags-reach-out-to-tyson-clabo/

Yes, he's an intriguing player who's got more potential than Roscoe. But teams drafting at #8 are doing so for a reason--and can't take risks like this. It's the reason why good teams drafting in the bottom third of the round always seem to strike gold--they CAN take risks and add players like Austin to a roster that's in good shape already.
-
Apples and plumbs. Wilson is thick-bodied semi-RB/QB hybrid, while Austin is just a 174-pound smurf with a very thin lower body. Personally, Roscoe 2.0 would be a big disappointment, and a horrible risk for a new coaching staff to take with their first draft unless it's through some creative trading (which is not Nix's forte)...

After much back and forth, I'm hoping for Patterson. He's not a Buddy-type pick, given his limited resume, and 8 is too high, but the movement skills and RAC he displays in this video clip made my jaw drop. I can't recall a Bill since OJ that showed the stop-start-stop-start ability to make defenders miss he does. Almost Barry Sanders-esq: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=odURBHfLj0A Raw as a WR, but what phenomenal run after the catch ability. He'd be amazing in combo with CJ in the backfield. Add Manuel at pick 41, give them a year to acclimate to the NFL (in what's going to be a rebuilding season anyway) and have a good chance of having a "thunder and lightning" set of triplets for 2014...
-
I can still see a QB at 8. The Kolb move could just mean they realize (after their extensive due diligence the past few weeks) that none of this year's crop can be a year-one contributor. A guy like Smith or Manuel could be a franchise-type player in their mind, but not without a "red shirt" year...

Bills officially sign QB Kevin Kolb
Lurker replied to 26CornerBlitz's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Yeah, that pretty much sums up the situation as I see it. The guaranteed money's probably in the range of $3 million per year, which is pretty standard for a back up with previous starting experience these days. Nothing to get hung up on. And the flexibility issue at pick 8 is a real factor here. The only downside I see is the number of reps they'll have to distribute among the top three QBs on the depth chart at SJF. It may be tough for a rookie to insert himself into the picture with two guys who'll likely look good running around in shorts. Wilson was able to do it in Seattle last year, but was helped greatly by an injury to Flynn.
