Because a rookie OG will make about one-quarter of that. Last year's #8 pick (Tannehill) signed a four-year, $12.7 million deal while #9 (Kuechly) got a four-year, $12.6 million deal.... I like Patterson, but there's no way Buddy bets the farm on a guy with such little experience...

I agree with everything you said...except he doesn't seem to be a great fit for a high-tempo no huddle-type scheme that requires linemen to be constantly on the move.

Ryan Nassib - QB - Syracuse

I'm not talking about arm strength (61 yrds) or deep balls, I'm taking about touch and the ability to put the ball where only the receiver can get it. I just don't see it with this kid, whether its the mediocre 'Cuse team or at the Senior Bowl where surrounding talent was not an excuse. Very few franchise QBs are just fast ball pitchers. If Nassib didn't make those intermediate touch passes at the college level, I can't see how Marrone's 'NFL experience' would assure him that he could in the pros? -

Exactly. What's funny is the 'draft a QB, any QB' comments that will eventually morph into..."the Bills can't draft QBs worth $hitt...." -
Al Michaels charged with DUI

According to Wiki, that drunk blew a 0.19 percent two hours after the crash, and was also driving with a suspended license. He got a 51-year sentence... -

I agree with you. There are certain throws that are specific to the NFL game that I just didn't see enough of from Nassib on video. I'm talking about dropping the ball into the wideout's hands on 20-yard outs or corner end zone routes by throwing over the underneath coverage--rather than pitching a fastball as hard as you can throw like most of Nassib's passes. That's a skill the Brady's, Manning's, Rodger's of the world (and even Russell Wilson) excel at. The only QB in this year's class that I've seen make that type of throw consistently is Manuel. While he's not as NFL-ready as Nassib or Barkley, he's got the arm skill to be more effective than either of these 'game manager-types' over the long haul, IMO... -

What's your point? Brown's not implying that he's tipping the Bills strategy or has some great inside info...only that he's heard the same things we all have. -

With regard to this class, "most NFL-ready" seems to imply "game manager" rather than "franchise" QB... -

Which is why I wanted to see that game. I don't care about Big East opponents, frankly. He seems one-dimensional to me, even if it's the start of the season against a quality opponent at a neutral site. There are no easy games in the NFL and I'm sure the Pats won't lie down for whoever's under center on September 8th... -

I don't want to hijack this thread, but I was a bit disappointed with Hackett's scheme. I was expecting a Kelly-era version of the K-Gun but it seemed to be just another Oregon State-like spread offense with WRs that flood the field. The K-gun I remembered was pretty balanced (two outside receivers, a slot guy and the TE) and didn't rely on bunch formations or a lot of pick action like Hackett's scheme, which also emphasizes a lot more rhythm passing by Nassib than Kelly-style throws. If anything, Jimbo Fisher's scheme for Manuel reminded me more of the old K-gun: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hC6E52F8rtA -

That's where I'm at, too. I think with Kolb onboard, they can afford to take a developmental guy like Manuel rather than a guy like Nassib or Barkley. I like the dreaded 'P-word' that Manuel has, as well as his flexibility to play a variety of styles. On the other hand, I think the Bills are in a tough place with #8 since they've backed themselves into a corner by saying they're taking a QB high. I could see them taking Barkley since he's the most NFL-ready guy in this draft class, IMO, if they really are committed to going with a young guy now, rather than in a year or two. -
Ryan Nassib - QB - Syracuse

I got the drift that that was all he was asked to do. Not too sure that that's adequate preparation for an NFL QB, especially if you're going to put him on the field early in his career. If I'm going to take a guy at #8, I want him to be able to go off the primary target if the play's not there. And throw a receiver-friendly ball, rather than having just two speeds--throwing through a concrete wall and the deep fade. In all the highlights I saw, the biggest positive impression I got was....of Alec Lemon.... -

I just did the same thing. Game film against a number of 2012 opponents, not highlight packages (Google is your friend).. He has a fastball, but it's scattershot and not that receiver-friendly. And he makes a lot of one-read slant-type throws, rather than progressing through a route tree. If there wasn't the Marrone connection, I couldn't see Nassib anywhere on the Bills radar at #8... -

Not real impressed with the USC game film, to be honest. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WhgDOOq3hDY His mechanics (and flight of the ball he throws) seem more like a baseball pitcher than an NFL QB to me... -

Aside from the score itself, one thing a low Wonderlic would tell a team is how committed the player is to doing what's expected and working at their craft. Every draft eligible player knows they're going to be tested--so the ones that don't even spend an hour getting familiar with the format, thinking about how to take the test, and in essence--blowing it off--tell you something about their attitudinal makeup and (lack of) maturity...

IMO, your second statement here--particularly in today's college game, where the talent level is much more widely disbursed--is a fundamental driver of the first. Scheme is driving more and more college offenses (and the stats they put up), which makes the translation of QB play to the NFL game more difficult. This QB class seems particularly scheme-heavy, which is why there's such a lack of consensus on who the top prospects are.

Kiper profile on Rogers: "He has above average arm strength, but he can be a bit mechanical in his throws." http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/columns/story?columnist=kiper_jr_mel&id=3279488 NFL.com profile on Ryan: "Needs to do a better job of planting his feet to get more zip behind his long throws...Has inconsistent and adequate velocity when firing the ball deep..." http://www.nfl.com/combine/profiles/matt-ryan?id=310 -
IMO, the only thing standardized about the Wonderlic is that players/posters who get a high score say it's important...and those that score low say it's not.
