  1. A portion of the site has been cleaned up, but only to industrial use standards. http://www.buffalonews.com/city-region/lackawanna/steel-plant-is-showing-signs-of-life-in-lackawanna-20140226 Regardless, the biggest issue would appear to be time, not money. Getting a new stadium built on a site that requires that much remediation would be next to impossible by the end of the existing lease.
  2. According to the Snooze, remediation costs were $19 million over a five-year clean-up period: http://www.buffalonews.com/opinion/buffalo-news-editorials/high-tech-hub-benefits-from-work-brown-administration-began-in-2008-20131129 The Bethlehem Steel site is considerably larger and would likely take a decade to clean up, even if the money could be pried out of Washington (unlikely from a House appropriations standpoint).
  3. The River Bend site has already been remediated and is shovel-ready...
  4. Alex, I'll take "Irony" for $500 please... Silevo announced plans to move into the RiverBend facility on the former Republic Steel property in November. The company initially wanted to build a 200 megawatt production facility. Tuesday's announcement means the facility will have five times the capacity and produce almost three times the number of jobs, Rive said in an interview on Tuesday. http://www.greentechmedia.com/articles/read/solarcity-just-acquired-silevo-and-became-a-solar-manufacturer
  5. Hard to believe, but Rodak makes me pine for the days when Timmy Graham wrote that blog...
  6. Media group think is a wonderful thing. "Fifty-seven channels and nothin' on..."
  7. The opportunity for non-Indian casino gambling...which is now off the table with the deal struck with the Seneca nation following the statewide constitutional referendum. Sorry, Howie. You lose. (BTW, the Thruway chairmanship is a window dressing position with little or no real clout)
  8. It's all bupkis. Cuomo's visits are always highly scripted and there's no way he had a breakfast where the Rogers folks were invited. Andy was in town to announce the 8 companies that were selected for the Tax Free New York program and had zero interest in doing anything Bills-related on the same day. If you listen to scumbag Florio, he hedges all over the place whenever the 'meeting' is mentioned.
  9. More like Bevis and Butthead. Undoubtedly, this 'report' is a lame ass attempt at humor...
  10. What Tom seems to not understand vis-a-vis the $130 million is that half of that spending is just to shore up the Ralph's aging infrastructure to get it through to the end of the lease. That deferred maintenance had to be done regardless of where/if a new stadium is built. The other half, which could be considered 'lipstick on the pig,' will nevertheless enhance the gameday experience for the next 6-7 years...and in the grand scheme of things, $65 million isn't that big a deal, given the $130 billion the state spends every year...
  11. While his current WGR show is in its second year, Murph hosted a nightly radio show ("One on One Sports") on WBEN from 1984 to 1995. It was the golden age of Bills talk, both in terms of on-the-field success and talk show quality...
  12. Given that many of Murph's interview subjects are players or members of the media, he has to go lightly on the "thought provoking" (i.e., talk slowly, use monosyllabic words and ask more than a few softball questions). Not all of these guys are as eloquent, accomplished speakers as Leodis or Kiko....

  15. A better outcome would be for the Snooze to cut Sully, but that Guild protection is just too, too tough. And since people are talking about him, Warren Buffett's probably not unhappy with his pandering / lowest common denominator / drunk on a barstool schtick. Still, I'm counting the days to his retirement or buyout...(and Bucky's as well)
  16. Absolutely. Its the sure way to sell newspapers and commercial time slots...
  17. This place needs a Kryk-free moratorium. The guy's the Donald Trump of journalists...all speculation and "reliable, informed sources" that have more than a bit of hocus pocus to them. A pox on anything he produces...
  18. Yep. Can't put a size 10 foot in a size 7 shoe, even if you spend a ton of money trying...
  19. That applies to the naysayers as well...
  20. Uh...50,000 people work in downtown Buffalo every day...including the winter. The ability to handle traffic won't be a stumbling block,,,unless it's in a no-man's land like the Central Terminal or outer harbor sites. The Perry project site wouldn't be much of a problem...no different than getting to OBD is today.
  21. With all due respect...bupkis! I've worked in the central business district for over 30 years and this is by far the most residential development momentum I've seen in that whole period. New units are absorbed as quickly as they come on line with many more still to come. And older rental properties aren't being abandoned, from what I've seen. There's no one-for-one substitution going on--the whole urban living marketplace is growing. That's what Buffalo's been missing since the light rail fiasco in the 80s. Now we're seeing a reversal from that terrible urban planning mistake. And the only subsidy it took to make it happen was New Market and historic rehab tax credits, which are federal and state dollars, not local tax handouts. The decline in overall population you cite is occurring in the east side and other depressed neighborhoods, due to entrenched poverty and other social problems. That's no different than in any older Rust Belt city. But the influx of millenials and working professionals that's helped boost other cities is happening--and the Sinatra's, Termini's, Montante's (and many smaller players) are scrambling to meet that demand. Companies like M&T, First Niagara, the medical campus, etc. have added thousands of jobs in the CBD or just adjacent neighborhoods over the past few years (M&T put 500 new workers in the Larkin building just this year alone). With many more to come, as the $1.7 billion in new construction underway comes to market: http://www.buffalone...F/BN6638125.pdf
