Could it be that Brandon and Whaley realized this as well--and never in their wildest imagination believed a rookie NFL head coach with Marrone's pedigree would ever exercise that clause. So why argue over it and bog down negotiations? The odds of the opt-out happening had to be single digits. But then again, lightning strikes do happen...

The mad rush to hire these guys after the season ends is crazy for such an important position. Marrone was hired the first week of January, just like we're looking at now. The ability to to a "deep dive" on vetting their personalities and past work experiences is really too short, but that's how the game is played. Again, really crazy. It seems like "the interview" is everything (that was Gregg-o's big thing as well)..

Yeah, that was pretty stark. Then again, I wonder how many soft zone defenses Eli was seeing because they were always playing from behind. Regardless, he got the ball to ODB when Orton struggled to get it to Sammy...

He's a sports talk show guy in Oakland (former NFL scout) and does the pre-game show for the Raiders. Seems a bit lightweight, actually...

Probably an accomodation to Shanny the Elder who pitched his kid to the Bills. I'm not sure this is a good idea, however...
