swede316 replied to Steely Dan's topic in Politics, Polls, and Pundits
My dad was in WW2...He drove landing craft in the Pacific. I can only imagine the horrors he saw. I used to ask him about the war as a kid but he wouldn't say much. I only understood why when I was much older. I will always be proud of him and the things he stood for. I am also proud of the work today's men and women are doing in Iraq and Afghanistan. What about Florida and Michigan? They have to figure out a way to count those votes or it will crush them in November...Talk about disenfranchised.

You might not like his policies..but you will respect him! http://elections.foxnews.com/2008/05/07/mc...-commendations/ From his five years in a North Vietnamese prison camp to his tenure as the Navy’s liaison to the Senate, John McCain’s Navy record boils down to a series of unadorned paragraphs that bestow upon him some of the nation’s top military honors. The Navy recently released McCain’s military record — most of it citations for medals during his Navy career — after a Freedom of Information Act request by The Associated Press. McCain was awarded a Silver Star Medal for resisting “extreme mental and physical cruelties” inflicted upon him by his captors from late October to early December 1967, the early months of his captivity, according to the citation. The North Vietnamese, according to the Navy, ignored international agreements and tortured McCain “in an attempt to obtain military information and false confessions for propaganda purposes.” McCain, now the Republican Party’s likely presidential nominee, was taken prisoner in October 1967 after he was shot down while on a mission over Hanoi. He wasn’t freed until March 1973, after the United States signed peace agreements with the North Vietnamese. His captors tortured him and held him in solitary confinement. Still, he declined an offer of early release until those who had been at the prison longer than him were let go. That decision earned McCain a Navy Commendation Medal. Although McCain was “crippled from serious and ill-treated injuries,” he steadfastly refused offers of freedom from those holding him prisoner. “His selfless action served as an example to others and his forthright refusal, by giving emphasis to the insidious nature of such releases, may have prevented a possibly chaotic deterioration in prisoner discipline,” the citation says. McCain attended the U.S. Naval Academy from 1954 to 1958, and was commissioned as an ensign in June of that year. He retired in April 1981 with the rank of captain. In that time he received 17 awards and decorations. Besides the Silver Star Medal, McCain also received the Legion of Merit with a combat “V” and one gold star, a Distinguished Flying Cross and a Bronze Art (I think that is meanst as a Bronze Star) Medal with a combat “V” and two gold stars. Several citations mention his achievements either as a prisoner or as a lieutenant commander flying bombing runs off the deck of the USS Oriskany. Some are signed by then-Secretary of the Navy John Warner, who would become a colleague of McCain’s in the Senate. The citations refer to his “accurate ordnance delivery” and his “aggressive and skillful airmanship.” He earned his Bronze Star the day before he was shot down, for participating in a mission over an airfield in Phuc Yen, 11 miles north of Hanoi. The citation for his Distinguished Flying Cross sums up McCain’s misfortune the following day: “Although his aircraft was severely damaged, he continued his bomb delivery pass and released his bombs on the target. When the aircraft would not recover from the dive, Commander McCain was forced to eject over the target.” Years later, as his Navy career approached its end, McCain received the Legion of Merit Medal. By then, his missions were in the halls of Congress as a liaison to the Senate from the Navy’s Office of Legislative Affairs. He was praised for providing Navy leaders “with sage advice and sound judgment for enacting critical legislation during a period of severe fiscal constraint.” The following year, he ran for Congress from Arizona, and won.

That might be the dumbest thing I've ever read....Seriously...I think the more you make , the less taxes you should pay...It would be an incentive for people to get off their asses or everyone pays the same percentage over lets say $25,000...those under $25k pay nothing....There..I helped the poor and provided incentives for everyone else. I don't mind helping people out but goddamn..there's a limit.

God helps those who help themselves...right? It's called join the army, navy, marines, peace corps...whatever...there are ways out of any situation...It's called quit feeling sorry for your self and make something of yourself. There were 2 paths I coulda taken...one good...one bad....I don't buy any sad story....We all make choices...Live with em.

Republicans are racist?
-
How so? 13% of the population wasn't the majority the last time I looked. It's racist when 90% of one racial group votes for one candidate because they are the same race. They are a minority because they represent a smaller portion of the populace...That's just the facts. I agree that the policy should be inclusive of everyone but you cannot cater to the minority. They do that here in the Northern Territory wih the Aboriginal population....People are getting more racist by the day because of policies designed to cater to the Aborigines. It's one of the reasons I'm moving back to the USA.

Congrats man...I hope to hell I find a decent job in Buffalo...Would love to move back and be a season ticket holder!

I'm single...the single man is doooomed...and I make a fair amount. I'm punished for doing everything correctly...Joined the military and learned a skill, went to college, earned a master's...kept myself out of trouble.....got a good job....and now I'm paying the man. Edit: I also don't own a home...Not sure about where I'm gonna live yet when I return from Australia....Not down with the rental property..Tried it once and tired of tenants who didn't pay.

"Again, they are both flaming libs." No doubt there....I wouldn't vote for either one if you held a gun to my head. I guess I'll be voting for McCain because he's the lesser of the 3 evils IMO. NYS is so f*&ked and Hillary hasn't don't crap to help it. Obama just scares me...he has no experience and he wayyyy left. McCain is ok....Can't say anything bad about him, I truley respect him but he could do more. Where's a real third party candidate when you need one? Jesse Ventura maybe in 2012?
-
Ummm yea...I'm bitching and moaning....29% of what I make goes to Uncle Sam...That means I work the first 15 weeks of the year for the government. I am sooo down with a flat tax.
-
I think that according to the percentages I posted above....Obama will be a polarizing figure in the general election...And that's not a good thing for him and says alot about the country still.

Democrats Win GOP House Seat
swede316 replied to molson_golden2002's topic in Politics, Polls, and Pundits
Maybe...but what I find odd is that this should be the year that the Democrats steamroll the Republicans in the presidential elections (If all you Bush bad people are right) but the polls show McCain winning or losing by 1 or 2 percentage points. Either McCain is a decent choice or Obama or Clinton scare the crap out of middle of the road independants and Reagan Democrats. I guess there are alot of closet Bush supporters too. -
I guess both....Look at North Carolina...He won amongst blacks 90% - 10%. 1/3 of primary voters were black. Indiana the same 90%-10% but 78% of voters were white vs 62% in NC. It seems african americans are more concerned about race than whites.

I know I do...and nope, don't want to give it up
