By taking a stand on gun control she made herself appear more substantive and more of a leader, which one would expect given her background. That was missing 7 years ago when she changed her tune based on where her latest stop was. In debates she said nothing other than "we all hate George bush", thinking she was the front runner and the party would reunite behind that theme, while again avoiding taking any real position.
