  1. If the two are even remotely connected, then I say someone needs to shiv the mofo.
  2. Just got the breaking news alert from WGR: 61 year-old O.J. Simpson was sentenced to 18 years in jail for armed robbery and kidnapping charges. The former Bills running back will be eligible for parole in 6 years. Seems to be a lot of confusion about how long he'll serve....
  3. Simpson could serve up to 33 years but could be eligible for parole after nine years, according to Elana Roberto, the judge's clerk.
  4. The NHLPA has no teeth right now, not after they got B word-slapped in the last labor stoppage then had the players revolt against he leadership.
  5. Even the NHLPA realizes Avery is a nutjob and this is a losing battle. Avery's got a decent rap sheet with the league.
  6. If by Fins you mean Max, then I think you're dreaming. Not only would the Sabres not take Avery on, no one is going to trade anything of value for Afinogenov.
  7. Six games without pay and ordered to under an anger management evaluation. His impromptu press conference will cost him at least $125,000 in game checks, and possibly more if the Stars refuse to take him back. http://sports.espn.go.com/nhl/news/story?id=3747105
  8. A-Rod spent spent four years there, not a good deal of his childhood. Born in NYC, moved to DR at 4, moved back at 8. But thanks for reminding me of something I already posted - that A-Rod certainly has the right to play for the DR, given the WBC's rules. (That also makes me wonder why the WBC doesn't have a "make your choice and that's it" clause like the Olympics has. A lot of NHL players who hold dual citizenship got to choose who they wanted to play for, US or Canada, but once they made that choice they couldn't go back for another team.) And don't try to tell me that they would "wipe the floor with any team." They would have as good a chance as any to win the tourney, but they would not necessarily dominate, especially given the format. Course none of this matters anyway - last time Team USA got knocked out of the WBC by that powerhouse to the south of us, Mexico. Took a pretty good roster, too - Jeter, A-Rod, Utley, Michael Young, Teixiera, Damon, Griffey, Matt Holliday, Varitek, Jake Peavy, Joe Nathan...
  9. Dude, come on. It's NYC. Everyone cares. Every move he makes is scrutinized by the tabloids. You really don't think that stuff causes issues in the locker room, if for nothing more than people continually talking about it? The media keeps asking about it, the fans call in to the talk shows, etc. As for Manny - well this wasn't just another "Manny being Manny" storm. He and the Red Sox played that "is he coming back, are we going to trade him, I want to be traded" game for how many years? They said at the beginning of the year that they weren't going to talk about extending his contract, and declined to discuss his 09 and 2010 options and He was gone when he attacked the team's traveling secretary. If you haven't read it, you should check out The Sports Guy's look into the end of the Manny saga. An interesting read, even for that whining, spoiled B word.
  10. What's the marketing move behind cheating on his wife with strippers and then banging the crypt keeper? I think he is a distraction, especially in NY where every move is scrutinized. Which Manny are we talking about? The focused, no-BS player who showed up in LA? The guy who wore out his welcome in Boston and turned into a malcontent? I wanted him to stay with the Tribe when his free agent contract was up, but not now. Too much baggage, too high a price tag to deal with that baggage.
  11. Why isn't it? He played the first WBC with the USA. Now all of the sudden he wants to join a loaded DR team when the US could really use him? Seems douchey to me.
  12. I'd say read the article. The author does a pretty good job of laying out the particulars of many questionable A-Rod decisions. A-Rod certainly has the right to play for the DR, given the rules, but it seems kind of ridiculous to switch horses midstream and leave USA Baseball, which needs him more than the DR team will. To be fair, I like A-Rod as a player, I really do. And if the off-field distractions were minimal, I would love to have him suit up for the Tribe. But every time I start to like him as an icon of the sport, he rolls out another dumb move or stupid decision and adds another douchebag thing to his resume. It makes me wonder WTF is going on in his head.
  13. In the grand scheme of things - considering how lenient the NHL is on the topic of on-ice safety, stick fouls, etc., - it is excessive. But looking at the act itself, I don't have a problem with it. If the comments were made to Phaneuf on-ice in the heat of the moment, that's one thing. But to gather the media and make sure the cameras are on before making that kind of comment? He deserves whatever the league hits him with, IMO. The area I disagree is the "free speech" issue. Most of us here have employers who can certainly put limits on what we say, with the threat of disciplinary action for inappropriate comments. Most companies wouldn't allow their employees to swear at or make sexually suggestive comments to their clients/customers or even coworkers, so why should the NHL let a player say whatever he wants to national media representatives?
  14. The MLBPA union is light years ahead of the NHLPA. The Yanks couldn't do anything to Giambi because he never admitted to taking steroids, and because allegedly they deleted the word steroids from the clause in his contract that would allow them to void the deal. LINK The union will appeal on principle, and there will be some sort of compromise with the NHL. I wouldn't count on a paid leave of absence (never happen in the NHL) but I would expect to see 8-10 games and a heavy fine. But I don't see Avery playing for the Stars again.
  15. I don't know about calling his suspension arbitrary. They've got that clause in the standard player's contract that basically gives the league carte blache to discipline players who do stupid crap that damages the league and/or game. Sounds pretty vague: On that July 2 date, when Sean Avery signed a four-year, $15.5-million (U.S.) contract with the Dallas Stars, he probably gave just a cursory glance at the 11-page document in front of him — the NHL's standard players' contract (SPC). Here's a refresher course from page 2, article 2 (e), in which Avery agreed — among other things — "to conduct himself on and off the rink according to the highest standard of honesty, morality, fair play and sportsmanship, and to refrain from conduct detrimental to the best interest of the Club, the League or professional hockey." LINK
  16. This only serves to reinforce this point: Thank you.
  17. True. Although I don't know if the union will fight that hard for him -- he's the most reviled player in the NHL, and his own teammates seem pretty sick of him.
  18. Right, you figured me out. I want a guy suspended for hurting someone's feelings. What a pile of crap. It has nothing to do with the "pussification of America." He gathered the media, made sure the cameras were running, and made a rehearsed, planned comment. He made sure it was a news story. There is a big difference between that and someone letting a couple f-bombs fly in the heat of the moment. If you can't see that I don't know what to say. He publicly embarrassed his teammates, the opponents and the NHL. That's why he was suspended - not because he hurt someone's feelings.
  19. Made a slight correction for you, LA. Jauron and co. will fiddle!@#$ with the QB, no doubt about that. But this goes back a ways - Jauron and co. are just the latest to do so.
  20. Fair enough. My original point was simply that there was talk of creating those those carryout cafe-style departments and services and the corporate masters were slow to adapt, which gave places like Boston Market and other homestyle takeout restaurants a foothold.
  21. He would have. The Stars are pretty fed up with Avery's schitt and he's not really helping the team. His teammates have no love for him, apparently. http://tsn.ca/columnists/james_duthie/?id=258309 He's got a long history of running his mouth (accused a couple times of making racial slurs on the ice, commentary about Marty Brodeur's ex-wife and divorce) and there is a big difference between on-ice, heat-of-the-battle trash talking and a planned, scripted crude remark.
  22. I'm not quite sure what you're getting at here.
  23. You should just go ahead and edit the title of the thread - maybe something like "JP Sucks and if he plays we're dooooooooomed!" or "Official Bash JP Thread." So unkown [sic] that you can't spell his name?
