Blue Jays "Buffalo2020" thread
apuszczalowski replied to PromoTheRobot's topic in Off the Wall Archives
Yup, the Federal government didn't feel comfortable allowing the travel back and forth even with the teams staying in their team bubbles. With Hockey they allowed it because all the teams would play in only one of 2 bubbles staying in the same city playing in the same arena. With hockey in Toronto, I even heard something about having tunnels/covered walking paths from the hotel to the rink. I think baseball could have worked with Toronto because they have the hotel attached to the stadium that the teams would be staying/living out of removing alot of the potential to transfer to people outside of the teams. -

What are the Bears going to do now for a TE? Will they have enough? -

Two first seems steep, except that Seattle is usually a pretty good playoff team whos picks will be in the mid to late 20s in those years -

I like how they say they should get it because they pay the most taxes. They obviously don't have a good accountant because most people making that kind of money find the loopholes or have connections to pay very little taxes -

I was just watching a game a couple weeks ago as Sportsnet here has played old games every night and it was a Jays/Orioles wildcard game from a few years ago. Funny to see how just a few seasons ago the Jays, Orioles, Royals and Tigers were all playoff teams and then to the bottom for rebuilds..... That was my nickname for a while..... -
Last year I had the opposite with Squash. I had so many we were giving them away from just 2 plants. Every couple days I had another couple big ones ready.

Totems would just lead to a forced name change in a few years..... Nothing sounds more fearce then having to face the team named after a wood pole with faces/heads... -

That would explain Toronto going to Pittsburgh first, Baltimore didnt want to be the 2nd best team calling Camden home this year.... I can wear the 5/8s but usually find the leave a red mark in most cases, I usually have to go to a 3/4 to fit right -

Except you were the only one taking it as an insult and saying players didn't want to play there. They tried to get a better option, had agreements in place but ultimately lost out on those because the government's where the teams play refused to allow it. There hasn't been a player express any feelings about playing in Buffalo. Technically, their girlfriend (Canadian government) dumped them, the tried for a couple of hot girls (Pittsburgh and Baltimore) and settled for what was left at closing time (Buffalo) -

I don't have an issue with the whole climate change thing, but it is the worst name for a sports facility that I have seen. But if there is one place I could see using a name like that, it's Seattle...... Wouldn't it have been more energy efficient to use a smaller name? -

Well they could spend a bunch of extra money to renovate another field for a temporary solution, or look to possibly work a deal to share a facility that's already up to the required standards. Pittsburgh only had 7 conflicting dates out of 60. And there are differences between a major league facility and an old triple A ball field. I find it funny that Pennsylvania and possibly Maryland are against this, they are already letting a team bring in teams from all over the country to do this it's no like they wouldn't be already doing this if the Jays weren't there. -

It's a sea monster, and a brand of alcohol..... You don't like them taking the European Football (Soccer) approach to naming teams? -
Same could be said for drunk driving. You could always stay at home so you don't get hit by a drunk driver. It's a free society, if I wanna drive home after a night of drinking, it's a free society and I should be able to do what I want! Mind your own business and let everyone drive themselves home after a night at the bar......

They pretty much were, the city of Toronto and province of Ontario all gave them the Ok, they were permitted to hold training camp there, then a little over a week before they were scheduled to play their opener the Canadian government says no. That's kind of surprising because during all of this, the higher levels of government have all been passing the enforcement and decision making to the provinces and cities. As for Buffalo, in order to play there, the facility needs upgrades for it to be used to bring it up to the league standards. Teams are going to need larger clubhouses because of the required distancing players will need to have. Other MLB teams will already have these things in place. If your a player and going to have to be quarantined to the area for the next 3 months, why would you just accept whatever and not try to get the best location you can? Would you just accept staying in a fleabag motel when there's a chance that a five star hotel could be available to you? -

Not sure if Buffalo is back in play, Baltimore might have a slight advantage as they were looking at Camden while also looking at PNC. They are saying the next option might just be playing the entire season on the road but they would get to be listed as the 'home team' when they would have been at home. Not much more they can do, but it puts them at a huge disadvantage having to constantly be on the road and giving all their opponents an advantage by having less travel. The dome is an ideal location being a dome with an attached hotel. The local municipal and the Ontario provincial governments all have the ok, but the Canadian Federal government wouldn't agree to let them play there. -

If your a player, having to quarantine and spend the majority of your time somewhere with limited external contact, I'm sure you would want that place to be very nice Pittsburgh has a very nice ball field with major League caliber facilities. Buffalos facility is nice for a minor league club, but its not the same as a pro league facility. -

I thought it was funny seeing some of the news stories about restaurants and bars being able to create or extend patios during this and they show them taking up sidewalks or parking spaces in the streets in Toronto. You would see a table of four on the street next to a curb with a couple of cones with caution tape across them being the only barrier between you eating your lunch and the city bus passing by on the road.i don't know how I would enjoy my food with the exhaust of a car right next to me while it's stuck in heavy traffic. -

Really, it's not like it really matters. They are quarantined for the entire season away from their families, there are no home crowds to cheer for them at the games. They could give them last at bat for what would normally be a home game for them. The worst thing would be that they don't get the nicer clubhouse for their home games and would be traveling alot more (maybe they could work out an agreement with the Canadian Federal government to cover those costs for the added travel) -

Now they are looking at sharing an MLB stadium with another team. They are considering Pittsburgh where they only have 7 conflicting dates after September or even Baltimore. -

I haven't heard anything about NH either, originally the plan was Dunedin until the last couple weeks when they said Buffalo was becoming the 2nd choice. It doesn't really matter where anyone plays since there won't be any fans in the stands. -

Arent you guys going to be bringing back the old incandescent bulbs? Sounds like Buffalo needs upgrades to the lighting and clubhouse to meet the requirements for the Jays to play there. Dunedin was going through alot of Reno's recently and I believe have those Reno's done already but it's also in Florida where their daily numbers exceed the total numbers for the entire country of Canada. If you watch all the games in regular definition, Buffalo should be fine.......
