  1. Here is another story about Jenny Finch... http://www.signonsandiego.com/uniontrib/20...1s12graney.html The class and grace of athletes such as Finch remind me of bygone days (for the most part) when professional athletes took the time for fans. I have heard stories of football players in the olden days who would sit down with the fans like they were one and the same. While it still happens, it seems that those who do mix with the commoners haven't been spoiled by the millions and and the ego inflation.
  2. If the suit can't be won then hang it up for now. I am not so sure if that is the situation. There is now added protection against class actions because of their abuse. However, all class actions are not the same. But you are right, the money has not been spent as it was intended. The media should be all over the governments who are misspending the money. I don't smoke but I understand how it must be extremely difficult for smokers to quit. What sickens me is seeing eighteen year olds smoking like there is and will be no harm to their bodies. As long as there are "examples" acting as if that there is nothing wrong with smoking then gullible kids will continue to ingest the poison. As for the execs, trust who you want but in my view they lied in pursuit of profits. Any lawyers have any insight on the lawsuit?

  6. Another tomato can coming up on Saturday...
  7. As for Jr., he made his mistakes and must endure the fallout. I don't like much of what he has said and done. He could use a public relations makeover. Better yet he could grow up. And as for Sr., much of what he said in the recent outburst I agree with. I would fight for my son also. Jr. is very young and immature. The media has found a target that is in large part good for ratings and sales. Has anything related to Jr. become part of a media circus? I think so. Look around at many 21 year olds and one will see a lot of immaturity. I screwed up a lot at 21 and beyond. Would I like my screwups of today and yesterday to constantly be overanalyzed by the press? No way. And when is the media wrong? When is the media going overboard? The media acts like it has some special right to hassle whoever, whenever with no limits. I don't care what the athletes or other celebrities make, there is a point where the media themselves display immaturity and foolishness by hammering at the insignificant as a way to create news or add life to a story, especially when there is a scarcity of meaningful stories. If it is a slow newsday (which it is for the NFL right now) the medai will create a story or beat an existing headline to it's death. Whether I was Jr. or Sr., I wouldn't go overboard in accomodating the media. I would simply do my job, whether it be player or father.
  8. I think of the three characters that were blown off the raft, the Korean guy is most likely to die. With his inability to speak English his story has limits. To make the show last they need to lose and add characters. When Danielle was about to hand over the baby she looked down at it as if she was going to take a bite out of it. On ABC's morning show they showed a deleted seen with Danielle sipping out of an egg. I seriously wonder if she is a cannibal. The scene with Claire getting the baby back made me think back a couple of episodes - they did this scene already.
  9. Cincy, thanks for the link! I am very interested in history! I was only able to scan part of the site but I will return. The section on street name changes is very interesting as is the sections on the various ethnic goups who have settled in Buffalo. And the link to War Memorial! I have been aching to get access to the hidden archives of the Buffalo Historical building. Thanks again!
  10. Was that "the weather changes two times a week" or " the weapons change two times a week"?
  11. The trolley ended up being a one line route from UB to downtown. Initially, when the trolley was first proposed, it was to include a second line that was supposed to extend into the suburbs (Tonawanda I believe). And I may be wrong but I believe it was the Reagan Administration that put the brakes on the second line. I have been on the trolley. It was clean and secure but it only went between UB and downtown! Ultimately, auto traffic downtown on Main Street was eliminated. Being from the North Side, I use to ride the old # 9 bus route which used to start on Kenmore, make it's way down Parkside while passing the Zoo and Delaware Park and ultimately end up downtown. After the trolley came along, the # 9 would hit Main Street and then turn on Jefferson. So the options were to take the bus part of the way and transfer to the trolley or bypass the bus and walk to a trolley station or go by car. Not fun! I pity the poor soul who didn't get the memo about the Jefferson part of the journey, only to get a reality shaking visit to the ghetto, fruit belt and the neighborhood where War Memorial Stadium once stood! From what I understand, Main Place Mall died a few (?) years back. People were going to the malls in the suburbs and certainly not shopping downtown at night. One of the reasons for the Mall's decline was the barrage of rowdy students after school would let out. It was a Catch - 22 as the kids would loiter and discourage people from Shopping at Main Place but the kids also became the primary patrons of the mall. In fact Jim Kelly opened a huge bar and restaurant in the South end of the mall that was formerly a bank. The bar was a bad business decision. It was out of touch with what Buffalonians would patronize. I went to Kelly's once when I came back for one of the Super Bowls. I remember buying one beer, paying with a twenty and the bartender not returning with my change. I had to get the manager involved in order to get my change. I am not sure how things stand downtown today as I haven't been back since 1999. I know there has been talk of a potential tenant for the old AM&A's. Downtown needs a good population of people with good jobs for working, living and shopping.
  12. From what was happening about twenty years ago, the "trade" went out of downtown up Genesee and also up the West Side. One time, I was at a Red Light (the traffic signal variety, errr... the automotive signal variety, never mind...) at Lafayette and Elmwood when this "trade worker" came up to my car and knocked on the window in attempt to invite herself into the car. I slammed on the peddle and made a turn instead. Another time around the same area a couple of my friends thought it would be fun to entertain a "trade worker's" selling skills. They rolled down the window and she started "selling" with her hands before grabbing a wallet. They had to get out of the car and chase her down to get the wallet back. This was about the time that they were building the trolley downtown and less people were coming downtown (a switch to Younge Street perhaps?).
  13. I agree. There are still those entertainers who are multidimensional but also are unfortunately underrated and unmarketed. We don't hear about this type of entertainer unless we are intense followers of dancing, acting, singing and especially standup comedy. In bygone days, it was hard to be an entertainer so plying a variety of trades kept them working. Our society has changed and the appreciation of theater and dance is not as mainstream as in the past. If there is a market and it producers profits then those days could return albeit in a different shade. The Batman movies were all bad. For too many of these "recreation" films the producers diverged too much from what made the Batman series a classic. Dick Tracy was one "recreation" film that tried to retain their predecessor's standard but honestly, the best part of that film were the costumes. There is a void in TV series' that have the classic style of the Batman series. But that is not how corporate TV wishes to gamble it's revenues. The best Batman episodes were when they had more than one villain in the episode. The Riddler was a classic - both the Batman character and the actor. The Riddler, the Joker and the Penguin all had very successful careers. And don't forget the one episode appearance of the Siren, aka Joan Collins! RIP Riddler.
  14. One thing about the Bills offense in the Super Bowl years was that Thurman was not just a major contributor with his runs but he excelled as a pass catcher. This hurt Reed in the sense that somebody else was getting the pill but also helped Andre in that opposing teams couldn't just blanket Reed. The Bills went to four Super Bowls and Andre Reed was an instrumental part of that. Reed should get in and in the words of one James Schoenfeld, Pasquarelli can eat another donut. I have one question about B. Smith. I believe Thurman and Andre retired as Bills. Did #78 also retire as a Bill?
  15. LL wil be on SNL next Saturday, May 21, 2005 with Coldplay. I am hoping the real LL will be like the old LL as in the Harry Potter skit. http://www.nbc.com/Saturday_Night_Live/index.html

  17. I walked in the door, flipped on the tube and there was Will with the wig and bell, just going off. The first thing I thought of was the "Wallers" and their lust for the cowbell! I couldn't believe that the band was able to perform without breaking into laughter!
  18. I never could find a US source for the game. By comparing the shots on goal in the US / Czech (27 - 53) and Canada / Czech (26 - 29) games the later seemed more competitive. Initially, I was disappointed because the US lost their entire lead in the 3rd period and ultimately lost the game in the shootout by 3 - 2. But after the final result of the championship game, the effort by the US team can now be viewed as a team of young, lesser knowns almost beating the champions. DiPietro's effort against the Czechs certainly was incredible. With the tournament being decided, DiPietro's performance now seems mind boggling! Canada / Czech summary: http://live82.ihwc.net/english/article/rec...hwc?&artId=2193 Now, I suppose, all that is left is the AHL playoffs and the Memorial Cup. Last year, I taped the last five games of the Stanley Cup Finals between Tampa Bay and Calgary. I will rewatch those games in the first week of June. I mean, it is all that they left us with. Memorial Cup: http://www.londonknights.com/memorial/memorial_cup.asp
  19. The US lost their entire lead in the 3rd. Unfortunately that is a tank. Dipietro was awesome. Knowing that the US put together a team of very young players I did not think they would do as well as they did. The Memorial Cup is also starting up which is a good chance to follow Sidney Crosby. Canada and the Czechs are in the tourney's final: http://live82.ihwc.net/english/
  20. Maybe as an earlier poster stated that Kate could have been molested by her father so she killed the father. Remember how Kate's mother started to panic after her initially recognizing Kate? Something wasn't right with Kate's family. Could there be two toy planes? Probably not. But Kate did "seem" to leave the toy plane in the car. They sure have a collection of multi-dimensional characters. Initially, I liked Kate (and seemingly so did the other characters) but now I see her as being evil. And as for Sawyer, I hated him in the beginning but now he seems "harmless". I look forward to the reappearance of the others. I wonder if there were people buried alive in the underground hatch by the others? There is a lot of emphasis on storing and hiding things such as with the time capsule and the safe deposit box and now a hatch.
  21. Too many shots on goal eventually lead to 3rd Period collapse. http://live82.ihwc.net/english/article/rec...hwc?&artId=2162
  22. True. Buffalo is one of the most white and black cities that I have ever seen. It used to be that Main Street was the divider between whites and blacks. No longer, as the black population has grown into the West Side. As Buffalo's economy got worse and worse, those that needed to move out, that could move out, did move out. Primarily, it was people who could afford to go who never looked back. Many of those who left were the young who went to college and never returned. My guess is that in large part those who departed were white. As the economy has gotten even worse those who remained have suffered in desperation. No surprise that this has exacerbated race relations for the worse. Unfortunately, one of the better paying jobs in Buffalo is that of a drug dealer. Whites and blacks eyeball each other in mistrust. In some other cities, sizable groups of Asians and Latinos have neutralized the white and black polarization. Every time that I return to Buffalo, there is always somebody in downtown trying to con me. I keep moving, don't make eye contact and when that doesn't work, I give them the spin move. I wish for better days for all of the people of Buffalo.
  23. Go Amerks!!! Is Vanek playing?
  24. "The Buffalo Bills will hold a press conference Thursday, May 12 at 11 a.m. in the Bills’ Media Room to announce a major event." Trades can be events but it this case I am skeptical.
  25. How many of these players do you remember? http://www.nba.com/clippers/history/braves_roster.html Do you remember the Cincinnati Royals (currently the Sacramento Kings) with Oscar Robertson? The franchise started in Rochester. http://www.sportsecyclopedia.com/nba/cincy/cincyroyals.html
