  1. What's really flawed is Buffalo's property taxes being assessed on current value as opposed to purchase price as other cities do. Certainly not good for real estate sales. But par for the course for overtaxed New York State. Bamboozled. Hoodwinked.
  2. I don't know if regulation is required but I would think teams would want the best coaches they could attract regardless of race. The argument that the development of coaches in college (and before that high school?) should precede NFL employment makes a lot of sense. In fact, that theory holds true in many professions. It will be interesting to see how Turner Gill (a black head coach) does with the University of Buffalo football team. From what I have read Coach Gill is off to a good start which is something that UB needs. But we all know that winning is what dictates success. Anybody that turns the UB program around deserves to move on to bigger and better opportunities. If Coach Gill succeeds in a turnaround then I would expect him to move up. Otherwise, if Gill succeeds and does not move up then it is more than fair to ask why. People of many races love football and many probably could care less about the ethnicity of the coaches and players. I want my teams to win and I am cool with people of any race getting opportunity yet qualifications and skills are necessary (which doesn't include skin color). But there is no denying that there are some cave people out there that want some illusion of racial purity when it comes to who gets hired. I do wonder why Art Shell never got another head coaching job. I thought he was a good coach (offensive line and head coach). Maybe he didn't like being a head coach or he simply needed to do something else. I have read that Shell was recently being considered as a candidate for the Raiders HC job. As for the argument that if a specific employer was racist in their hiring practices would one want to work for them anyways, I would say that depends on many things such as salary, benefits, potential to succeed and ability for the flawed climate to change. If it was me, I might want to take on the challenge and show that I was worthy of being hired. Somebody has to be the first one through the door in order for others to follow.
  3. Study this: http://research.amnh.org/~siddall/methods/day1.html
  4. A university is what I use and recommend. No sales jerk trying to push you into buying what you were planning to buy anyways until the sales jerk simply turns you off about the club. University rec centers get their overcrowded times like most other gyms so I go very early, workout and adore all the very lovely ladies. Parking at the schools can be a problem which is why I go early so I can get street parking.
  5. Here is the take from the Montreal Gazette: http://www.canada.com/montrealgazette/news...56c8e84&k=12277 No excuses, no controversy. They just tell it like it was. Good teams get their share of luck and they win games that they probably should not. Hopefully, Ruff gets on them a little bit before Thursday's game. A six game winning streak for the Sabres! I am loving it! I hope they can run the table through the weekend and then get a well deserved break.
  6. It's the "corporate" thing to do.
  7. Blackmail Day.
  8. People who don't understand hockey ("it's too hard to see the puck" - follow the action!) or don't like hockey, need to see the sport live (like other sports such as tennis) or play it (even in the driveway, basement, living room or street). Then they start to get it!
  9. If Ryan Miller keeps up his current level of play he has to get consideration for Rookie of the Year. That is if he didn't play too many games in 2003-2004? I realize Ovechkin and Crosby will have much to say about how the award plays out but Miller must get some attention.
  10. Charlie taints her dinner with too much heroin?
  11. That would work...
  12. So who offs her? I will say Sawyer although Sayid deserves a shot at her...
  13. How many shots does it take until you start looking like Popeye? Tom Brady isn't doing too bad with his lady. Look at some of these: http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/page3/story...mcintyre/041214 Heather Mitts gets my vote. Let the puns begin...
  14. I might have to leave the car and take the trolley! Take off Gordie!
  15. Thanks for the link! That is very fascinating. The traditional usage includes a large area. I met a guy a few years back who I believe was from Iran. He didn't like the term "Middle East". I see "Middle East" as a directional or geographical indicator but he saw it as something different which was a negative connotation. I believe that I read that the term "Middle East" was started in Europe (the English?) in the last century. I have met a number of Mexicans who don't understand why in popular expression U.S. born people are known as Americans when technically people from North, South and Central Americans can say the same thing. This usage may also be how people in the thirteen colonies were categorized by England and the rest of Europe. Amerigo Vespucci: http://geography.about.com/cs/historicalgeog/a/amerigo.htm Then again there are those from New York City who don't see those of us from upstate as New Yorkers. And as I always remind them, until tax time! Back to Lost. Maybe "the Others" see the contents of what is in the hatch similar to the forbidden fruit as described in the Bible or they would have already raided all those candy bars. Or maybe "the Others" just couldn't stomach having to "recharge" the numbers via the hatch computer? Something bad happens when the numbers aren't updated. What could that be? The black smoke turns into a tornado? All the grizzly bears come out and tear up the place? Mass chaos? For those of us who don't like one episode or another, none of us are going away! We demand too many answers! Forbidden fruit reference: http://www.gracecathedral.org/enrichment/b..._20030409.shtml
  16. As the years go by there always seems to be a new reason for me to dislike this team or that team. There aren't many left. It comes down to what they did to the Bills or how much success have they had. Or I don't like a particular player, coach, owner, announcer, fan, etc., etc., etc. When the playoffs started Carolina was the least of all evils. Now, it is Seattle. Pittsburgh has won enough Super Bowls, Stanley Cups and World Series championships. No more. I don't want them to be happy. Seattle won one NBA championship. I don't like the Washington Huskies. But I can stomach Seattle winning. At least it isn't New England again. Pittsburgh gets no props from me. Pittsburgh, no happiness for you. Go Sabres!
  17. This should explain some of the questions. Wow. http://www.howardstern.com/rundown.php?d=1138780800
  18. Yesterday, I am trying to drive down the freeway during rush hour when I think of this post. I was laughing so hard I almost lost the strength required to manage the steering wheel! I can just imagine all the mullets tailing out. Make that "oot".
  19. The network likes s t r i n g i n g us along... Interesting that they pulled out an episode from least season. Foreboding? Of course! It's in the numbers! Remember? It is also interesting that the only person who seemingly goes on record to not thinking that Hurley is crazy is Rousseau. By the way, I didn't know this until I moved to CA. but many Asians that I have met don't like being referred to as Orientals. I don't quite understand why but that is how it is. Some consider it a slur. I wonder why with all the goodies in the hatch, "the Others" don't take it over.
  20. Yes, the Devils have had great success and they had a great January. But with the "new NHL" we can expect the "moneyed" teams to slide down in the standings. I wouldn't get too overconfident with that 7th position in the Eastern Conference standings especially with the Bruins making a charge of late.
  21. Yeah, what you said. I mean, Toys 'R' Us, they're everywhere.
  22. I don't know if either team would be interested. Rosenfels may turn out to be pretty good. Miami seemed to turn the corner this year, especially with their defense. A tough defense makes it a little easier to be patient with a young qb's development. And Holcomb may be the best qb on the current Bills roster at least for the short term. And with that third round pick? Horrors! Trade Josh Reed to Miami for a third round pick.
  23. What kind of contract did TO have in Philly? It turned out to be a 1 year contract in an unanticipated way. I suspect any future contract will have an explicit conduct clause.
