Typical bush league city crap
gobillsinytown replied to vegas55's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Huh? The area's got nothing to do with it. I take it you're from Cincinnatti? If a local station is airing/replaying a game, they generally will take precedence in any city. It all depends on the agreements between the NFL and the television or satellite networks. I can understand it you're angry, but you'd be better off venting your troll impulses to the NFL. Then again, I doubt you'd get an answer. -
It's official...we hve no QB
gobillsinytown replied to Niagara Bill's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I don't get it. The organization said that the QB position was going to be an open competition, and that no QB was the favorite. That's typical of a new coaching staff with unproven QB's. So, now that they're actually doing what they said they were going to do, it's a huge problem? Here's the truth: The team's in a rebuilding mode. That means evaluating everybody, including the QB's. That means playing them. So there's really no reason to panic, because it's pretty unlikely that the team's going to get more than seven wins under the best of circumstances. quote=Niagara Bill,Aug 12 2006, 07:37 AM] It has been 3 official team workouts, many optional workouts, and 2 weeks of officil training camp and JP cannot distinquish himself as superior to Holcomb. To me that equals trouble. IMHO if Holcomb is the QB at this point we had better begin to panic. I understand that the coaches need to satisfy the competitive spirit of the other 52 rooster players, but since we all know that winning with KH is near impossible then unless someone can surpass him easily I am afraid we are in for a Gary Marangi type year. I belief that the Bills should cut Losman if he cannot beat out Holcomb by the second preseason game. We are wasting our time. I equate this batttle to any running back who cannot beat out Shaud Williams by the 2nd preseason game also should be cut because we all know that if Williams is your second choice for a back (after Willis) then you may as well mail in the season. I live in Youngstown, where Maurice is from, and I can say that no one here is suprised. Ultimately it's his fault, but he's been told he's the second coming of Barry Sanders since he was about 12 years old. Rumors were that the high school he "attended" actually was paying the mortgage on his parent's house. Plus, throw in all the praise heaped on him from the colleges during the recruiting process, and all hype once he got to Ohio State, and the seeds were sown. I also think he knows now what he's thrown away. This latest incident sounds like an act of desperation. Maybe he was trying to "fit in" with one of the local gangs. Truly sad.

"His old a$$" is probably in better shape than yours.

You remind me of some of the fans I had the "joy" of sitting near when I had season tickets in the 90's. The Bills would be winning by two touchdowns, and yet they would express nothing but disgust at the play of the team. "We should be winning by five touchdowns!" or "Wait till they have to play somebody good" After a while, I started to think they were from another world, where people feed off negative energy to survive.

If they're 600,000 apart, that's chickensh**t money considering the total value of the contract. So I would expect that he'll be in camp fairly soon. But then again, who really knows how far apart they are? Some sources say 600, others say over a million. Either way, I still think he'll sign. And we're not the only team dealing with agent squabbling, so I think after all the huffing and puffing, most if not all ofthe first round picks will get done within the next two weeks.

Bruschi injures wrist!
gobillsinytown replied to Oneonta Buffalo Fan's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
You're all going to hell, but man these are all funny! The bad part is, God will punish us by making ESPN and any other network even remotely connected with pro football do several hour-long specials on his recovery, which will air at the beginning of every preseason and regular season game until they take his cast off. Then he'll make his season debut against the Bills, who will all be afraid to block him because he's just so wonderful. -
Dallas' DE Greg Ellis is wanting out of Dallas.

Very good point. I would be suspicious. Especially when Parcells is saying "play or get out". Sounds like they're not missing him too much. -
Convince me Whitner was a good pick
gobillsinytown replied to MrLocke's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
At the saftey spot, height is not as much of an issue as you might think. I think good safties are able to read the play, make the right choice, and get to the ball or get into coverage consistently. At the pro level, their play has to be almost mistake-free. So intelligence, speed and strength are more important than height. There's been a boatload of draft choices with "prototype" height and weight that couldn't even crack a starting lineup. -
Couple of tidbits I heard over the weekend

I guess Ralph isn't so senile after all
gobillsinytown replied to BUFFALOTONE's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
That's an interesting bit of info that I'm sure most of us didn't know: Language in the TV deal requiring payback in the event of a strike. Now it starts to make sense! I was very suprised at how quickly the owners caved in during the meeting. But considering how much money they stood to lose from a strike, what they gave the players isn't quite so much now. If you've seen the language of the TV deal, do you know if a strike would void the contract completely? -

It's funny how one arm of the ESPN machine doesn't seem to know what the other is doing. ESPN radio and TV were both all over Ralph and the Bengals owner for speaking their minds, and making the usual smart a$$ remarks about Ralph's age. However they seem to have a short memory, since in your post below, they seem to be acting like this is some sort of revelation. It will be months before the long term ramifications of the agreement are known, if the deal can ever actually implemented in any real-world sense. -
Actually I remember Copeland as looking really promising in '95, but then just disappeared. Some of the football magazines were picking him as the next low round draft gem. For a while there it looked like it was going to come true but I guess he wasn't able to make the yearly adjustments required of WR's to stay ahead of the DB's.

So I just watched tape of 37-7 victory over KC
gobillsinytown replied to JÂy RÛßeÒ's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I was at that game. What I remember most was how 80,000 fans did the "tomahawk chop" everytime the Bills scored. I also remember, after the game was out of reach, one of the KC wideouts running out to the middle of the field and doing the tomahawk chop after he caught a pass for a frist down. No booing....just loud, mocking laughter. I'm not the type of guy to harp on "The good old days", but in playoff games during those years, you had a sense that this team was a freight train that no one could stop. -
From NBC6 in Miami: MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. -- Investigators are scouring a field near Dolphin Stadium for clues after human remains were discovered Wednesday. A land surveyor working on an empty lot at Northwest 191st Street and 24th Avenue came across some human bones in a wooded area just yards from a neighborhood, NBC 6's Tom Llamas reported. The surveyor went to a Miami Gardens Police Station that is right next to the empty lot. Miami-Dade County police sent K-9 units and homicide detectives to the scene. "Homicide was able to confirm that, in fact, it is human bones and human remains, along with a pair of pants," said Detective Roy Rutland of the Miami-Dade County Police Department. Detectives would not comment on whether the bones were partially buried or out in the open. Investigators said they were not sure if the bones were that of a man or a woman. "The body will eventually be moved by the medical examiner's office sometime in the morning," Rutland said. Residents of the area said neighborhood children use the field for recreational vehicles. "They ride a lot of dirt bikes. I hear a lot of dirt bikes going on over there," said Alvin Lee, a resident. Police said the land, which is located between Dolphin Stadium and the Miami Gardens Police Station, is privately owned. The owners could not be reached for comment. Hope they don't find a Bills shirt anywhere nearby.

Dude. You have got to be kidding me. THE ONLY reason the Fins signed him was to pick his brain for any possible useful information on a division competitor. NFL teams do it all the time. If Bennie's starting come fall, you'd better worry. I'm sure Bennie has some athletic ability, but he keeps it buried under a ton of lard all year long, and no amount of "highly regarded" coaching can correct that.

Steelers QB Ben R. In Motorcycle Crash
gobillsinytown replied to Mark VI's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
One other thing Big Ben is going to be dealing with: Endless questions from every single reporter, writer and fan on the street who sees him. Living here in Youngstown (about an hour from Pittsburgh), and knowing the frenzy that the Pittsburgh radio, TV and print reporters can work themselves into, I think the hardest part for Ben is yet to come. They will hound him unmercifully. I'm glad he's going to be OK, but knowing the constantly congested state of the Pittsburgh roads, riding a bike without a helmet was an incredibly stupid thing to do. I know he's in his 20's and thinks he's immortal, but maybe this will turn out to be a good life lesson for him in the long run. -
Steelers QB Ben R. In Motorcycle Crash
gobillsinytown replied to Mark VI's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Coming in late to this debate.........I'm not against taking away freedoms from anyone, but if you're riding a motorcycle on any road where there is car traffic, you're exposed. My wife is a dietitian who spent four years at a rebab hospital. She tells the story of a young high school athelete who was speeding down one of our suburbs at night with his friends when a car pulled out in front of them. He wasn't wearing a helmet and sustained severe brain injuries. He remains paralyzed to this day and his promising college football career (to a major college on a scholarship) was gone. He was at the rehab hospital for over a month. Because of the brain injury, he initially lost his sense of what was appropriate behavior. So for example, when he felt like masturbating, he did it, regardless of who was in the room. Thank God most of his mental faculties returned, but he still has profound memory loss of significant portions of his life. It took him months just to learn how to speak again. The other thing he has is agonizing, profound regret. So to make a long story short.............just wear the helmet. If you choose not to, then by your actions, you accept all potential consequences. -
The I Miss Bennie Anderson Thread
gobillsinytown replied to I Forgot My Last Username's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
My favorite memory is one that I'm sure endeared him to so many of his coaches and teammates: His novel approach on pulling plays. Most guards do the usual thing and actually hit the hole before the running back gets there. Not Bennie. His unorthodox approach of letting the running back get there first, so he could be blown up by the linebacker, was a stroke of genius! I'm telling you, he's ahead of his time! -
You're right about JP, but an athletic QB ultimately must make the right decisions. JP may have the ability to roll out and throw on the run, but NFL defenses will quickly move to counter that if that's all he can do. For the QB, it's ultimately about he ability to read defemses and make good decisions quickly while under pressure. I don't think JP has played enough to show whether he can do that consistently.

Call for examples of Losman's "attitude"
gobillsinytown replied to RuntheDamnBall's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I always thought it was a little impetuous on Donahoe's part to sacrifice a first round pick in order to get JP, but I was willing to give him the benefit of the doubt. The only problem that I saw with JP in college was that he was playing behind an awful O-line and was running for his life a lot. Sometimes the effects of that can carry over into the pros. After all, it's not necessarlily the "playbook knowledge" that makes a quarterback....it's what he does on instinct, when he doesn't really have time to think. So bad habits learned through having to compensate for bad O-line play can be hard to unlearn. What made it worse for JP was that the Bills' O-line was probably just as bad as Tulane's. So he had to start compensating for bad O-line play, but this time against defenses that were better than anything he ever saw in college. I don't think he has a bad attitude or that he's to flaky, because he never got enough game time to prove the issue one way or the other. It didn't help that he had to deal with wierd playcalling either. And to prepare a rookie QB for a run-first style of play all preseason and then expect him to make a panic switch to a different style of play wasn't the best thing for him either. I think the team needs to determine, one way or the other, whether he's team's QB or not. And it should be this season. -
I'm still puzzled as to why they got Culpepper, unless their medical staff was really sure he could come back. I saw a replay of that injury and it was nasty. I think the Dolphins will be will be good in a weak division, but I doubt they'll go much further, if they can get past the Patriots. And even if Daunte makes it back, he definitely won't be taking the risks he did before.
