Winslow's mystery illness revealed
gobillsinytown replied to DrDawkinstein's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Living here in Youngstown, OH (about an hour away from Cleveland), we get a lot of Browns coverage. Different sources say different things about the team on this issue. Some sources say that it's actually the Cleveland Clinic's fault for the recent problems at the Browns facility with staph infections, because the Browns "outsource", that is, use Cleveland Clinic personnel at their facility. Other sources say it's strictly the fault of the Browns medical team because they're lax in following infection protocols. Either way, it's a serious problem because some strains of staph infections can kill. Or in some cases cause muscle and tissue damage as in the case of LeCharles Bentley. The Browns also haven't done themselves any favors by the fact that they refuse to address it publicly in any serious way, which leads to more speculation. -
I've been watching this game for about an hour. Arizona looks pretty feisty to me. As long a Warner can remain upright, they're going to give their opponents fits. But the key is keeping Warner upright. Their defense doesn't look all that bad either.

He certainly is a big kid and I hope he translates to the pros. But there's no guarantee he will. Physical size and pure talent can take a guy far in college, but not necessarily in the NFL. The keys will be to keep developing his footwork and body leverage, and getting into the film room.

I was at a party in Kenmore with about 20 other people during that game. Everybody was crying at the end. Not only that, but I had to get up at 6:00am to drive home. Depressed, hung-over, and driving through an entire city that was just as depressed and hung-over as I was. I Don't think I'm going to be reliving that anytime soon......

The problem with always running a locked route is that the defense will clamp down on it. If the defense knows that a particular WR is always going to run the same route, they'll just double cover that WR and prevent him from getting any kind of separation to catch the ball. Hardy's big, tall and strong, but not enough to constantly have to fight through two DB's to catch the pass. This is especially true of the #3 WR postion, which is almost always in the "slot". The "slot" or #3 WR position depends on the timing between the WR and the QB more than any other. That's generally why it takes more time for a WR to develop. There are exceptions, but for the most part it takes a WR a year to develop.

This from the Bills' receivers coach: “Oh, no question,” Tolbert said. “At Indiana, he ran the route regardless of the coverage. In the NFL, you have to read the coverage on the run and be able to adjust your route based on the coverage. He had never done that before in his life. That was a big adjustment, and I was surprised coming from a Big Ten school he had never done that. Before, he just locked the route.”' I'll take this guy's word for it. The NFL is a whole different level. No one should be writing Hardy off yet.

The Raiders may become the first NFL team to have a hard time finding coaches to come work for them. Most coaches at the college and pro level and ultra confident guys, who think they can turn around any program. But I'd bet they're having a hard time getting quality candidates. I can't see why anyone would want to "coach" this team, when the real "coach" is sitting up in the luxury box.

I'll take it as a good sign that he's on the stationary bike. Usually that means he's not so banged up that they would perscribe complete rest.

These incidents are always going to be tricky to interpret, because it really is a guessing game. Was the DB intending to hurt Boldin? Most likely not. He's coached to hit hard, and in the heat of the play, how well can someone really control his body? The only thing they can do is look at the tape and try to make a determination from there. But I agree with you about the nature of the sport. It's violent by its very nature, so this kind of stuff is going to happen no matter how many rules are made up. Actually I'm suprised there aren't more injuries, which is a testament to the advances in equipment and medical care.

The last report I had heard was Sunday night on ESPN when they said he had a concussion. If that's true, then he'll definitely be out. And especially if the doctors are seeing any kind of fracture. So while that's "good" news since we're without McGee, I thought the hit on Boldin was way out of line. It's good that they suspended the DB who delivered it.

He won't. He'll either negotiate a settlement or it will go to court. Crazy Al is back, and in rare form. It's getting to the point where he's going to have a hard time filling his coaching positions, even in the ultra-confident, "I-can-turn-this-around" mind set of most coaches. I guess Crazy Al's title is "Managing General Partner" - maybe the rest of the partners can vote him out?

Some of the quotes I've seen from the coaching staff seem to suggest a lack of motivation. If they're right, then that goes to show that pro football really is more mental than physical. McCargo's got the strength, quickness, etc. that he needs. Maybe he just doesn't have the IQ or motivation to turn the physical tools into good play.

I was at a grade school football game on Sunday, and their uniforms looked better.

Jags Richard Collier Paralyzed

Looks like it to me. Similar thing happened here in Youngstown, OH during the off season of 1994-95 for the Youngstown State Penguins. Some jackass got mad that one of the players was hitting on his girl at a party, so he shot the player 4 or 5 times outside the party and killed him. The player's name was Jermaine Hopkins. A good kid and an NFL draft pick in the making at defensive end. All because some guy with a small p*nis and a gun was upset over a girl. It happens a lot, but it's still sad. -
And the Arizona game will be a perfect way for him to get it, going up against a top wideout, in a non-divisional game.

I think there far too many people on this board who are looking askance at the original post. They seem to be getting their eyeteeth in the way of the original optics of it. -
Thoughts on James Hardy's play today.

I think that Trent probably shouldn't have trown that TD pass to him in Jax, because he's not a good player who can't manifest himself immediately. I agree. He should be cut now or have his game check taken away. Sorry excuse for a player. -
OK---someone has got to do it...

You might want to make sure the crayons you eat are non-toxic. -
Now THIS is the definition of irony!

Love it. But you know what's interesting? Donahoe doesn't appear to be involved with football at any level. You would think that a top flight GM and talent evaluator (according to Mort) would have a new NFL job by now.
