Of all the opinions I heard/read, my guess is that the reaction was about 60/40 negative. Jerry Jones of all people said that the biggest mistake he made as an owner was firing Gailey. So to me that indicates that it's too complicated to call it a bad hire yet. Gailey has been successful in some phases of his career and unsuccessful in others. When you have the combination of owner-front office-coaching staff-players, all trying to win in an incredibly competitive sport with a lot of money on the line, there are too many things that can go wrong to blame it on one guy. That's why you see the tendency for coaches and front office people to hire people they know and are comfortable with, which is the case with Nix and Gailey. Homegren's doing the same thing in Cleveland. Shannahan will do the same thing in Washington, if Snyder stays out of his way. The one thing you can say about Nix and Gailey is that they are experienced football guys. Hopefully that translates to some winning.

"Buddy Nix at 70 is a spring chicken compared to their owner. The hire of Chan Gailey really had me shaking my head. He flamed out with the Cowboys, flamed out with Georgia Tech, and flamed out as an offensive coordinator.....I'm wondering what the Bills think will be different this time around. I'm very biased to Leslie Frazier and I think the guy is a cross between Tony Dungy and Tom Landry. I believe he has all the makings to become a tremendous head coach and I was shocked the Bills didn't sit down and meet with him. Don't forget he had that Vikings team on the verge of going to the SuperBowl, despite the offense turning the ball over 5 times. So basically that's my answer to what I think of the Nix/Gailey combo in Buffalo, I hope you understand that." There are a lot of very opinionated people in the NFL, and a lot of opinionated people who cover the league, or who used to work for the league. For this guy to publicly state this indicates to me that he had a bad or no relationship with either Nix or Gailey. In 1986, I clearly remember league people and the media, including local media, bashing the hiring of Marv Levy. I live an hour away from Cleveland. When Belicheck was head coach, the Browns were awful and the fans and media cheered when he left. So this is a sport which has passionate fans, and employees who work incredibly hard and are very passionate about what they do. Does it mean they're always right? No.

What difference makers did the Bills miss out on?
gobillsinytown replied to Ramblin' Rob's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
A Boldin wouldn't make a real difference here. Sure he's a great player but there are too many other holes to fill. The best wideouts in the league don't matter if your QB is on his back or is completely rattled after all the hits he takes. IMO the team has to build from the lines up. Meaning, OL and DL. With the exception of Peppers there really wasn't anyone in free agency that would have enough impact next year. And the Peppers signing was a total desperation move that the Bears are going to regret. -
I think they're pretty busy exploring, we just don't hear about it. IMO there's always a ton of chatter and brainstorming around the league but most of it doesn't turn into anything.

NT Jason Fergusson suspended

If "smart" means ignoring the fact that the guy got caught using performance enhancing drugs when it's really easy to avoid getting caught, maybe Bill is slipping a little. -
Unless he can play OL, he's wasn't worth chasing after.

So Jauron is ghostwriting for Draft Insider Digest now.

Yeah, just like Dan Snyder does every year. And they have nothing to show for it. Peppers signing with the Bears is a desperation move by the coach because he knows he's gone if they don't win this year. And 9 times out of 10, desperation moves don't work.

McCargo is a 3 technique tackle. One gap, penetrate. But to do that, you have to have great anticipation. He doesn't have it. Unless he can convert to a pass rushing end in space, he's done.

What Free Agent Would Come To Buffalo?

You seem a little depressed....... -
It all depends on the location of the break and if there was any vascular damage as a result of the break. When the surgeon repaired the leg in Jacksonville, his comment was that the surgery was successful, meaning that he was able to repair the leg without loss of bone or vascular damage. That's good news. If Gailey said his rehab was ahead of schedule, that's even better. This would seem to indicate that Eric avoided any muscle atrophy or loss of blood flow in the leg. If his goal is to be back by the regular season, I would think he could do it. He's a a tough, dedicated kid with a high pain tolerance, which will again work in his favor once the serious rehab starts. I hope he makes it, but they won't rush him as he's got too much upside.

Bills Tender Keith Freaking Ellison
gobillsinytown replied to Rzon604's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Because the collective bargaining agreement has expired, we'll see a lot of teams doing tenders. I would assume we'll tender all of our RFAs at some point. Teams are maneuvering to deal with the uncapped year, and then the possibility of a lockout in 2011. -
Camp body. But who knows, maybe the light will come on for him

Denney, Reed, Owens are done in Buffalo
gobillsinytown replied to Lori's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
TO is a lot smarter now than he was a few years ago. At this stage in his career he knows it's more about marketing now than playing. He'll do the same thing he did here for another team. One year deal, a TV show, then to an NFL pre game show. -
I cant say I am thrilled with this. I love Williams and all, but I think he could be a stud at DE, and think he will be a bit of a let down at NT. Besides, we are going to add some DL guys anyway, so why not add an NT and let Williams move to the 5 tech. Unfortunately Williams doesn't translate to a prototypical DE in the 3-4 either. Kyle is more of the 3 tech tackle in the cover two or a one-gap DT in the 4-3. So they will have to make do until they can find a true NT. I think they're going to be playing a lot more 4-3 than 3-4 in the first year.

I don't think Nix gets too enamored with how many reps a player can bench or how high they can jump or how fast they can run. If I remember correctly, he mentioned that he looks for on field play. You can only do that through lots of scouting and film study. I think the only thing the combine is good for is the medical evaluation and maybe the interviews.

Looks like more speculation. Considering that the Bills are exploring lots of options at every position, I don't see why bringing in a QB that might have some promise is a bad deal, depending on what they would have to give up to bring him in. As far as LT and Sproles......the Chargers now have an empty backfield. I think that says a lot about both RB's. Nothing against either one of them, but LT is not an every down back anymore and Sproles never was. So if the Bills bring either one of them in it will be after Lynch is traded (big "if").
